Jeep wrangler starter diy, the other day my starter was begining to act up. Somethings it would start fine and other times i would turn the ignition key over and nothing would happen. This starter wasn't really that old only a few years or so. changing the starter is easy, first make sure you disconnect the battery. remove the electrical connections from the starter. Then remove the 2 bolts holding the starter in place and remove.

Thought I'd throw in my two cents worth since I replaced my 97 TJ's starter yesterday, 1-22-23. My replacement was going smoothly until it was that upper 15mm bolt's turn. I could not break it loose no matter what I tried. The 14mm lower bolt was no problem. After an hour and a half trying all sorts of things, I decided to see if my HF impact wrench would work. I had eliminated it this whole time because I thought there was no way it would fit. Even my deep set 15mm socket conspired to prevent it from getting in there. Or so I thought. No problem! Within seconds, the bolt was out! If I'd used it first, the whole replacement would have taken me about half an hour. Fired right up. Another few thoughts, the tapping with a hammer worked, it got me started, albeit weakly, and able to get the Jeep home where my impact wrench was gathering dust. My electrical connections were secured by an 8mm nut and 13mm nut that both must be removed before the bracket holding the two cables together can be removed. This was my second starter replacement in my whole life and probably my last - I turn 70 in four weeks.

Yep, just turned 70 myself and bought the rebuild. Easy install just used a cheater to take out that top ahole.

I watched a few videos before changing out the starter on my 2001 Wrangler and I think this was the best of them all. Clear and to the point. I appreciate that the troubleshooting is in a separate video since I already know that I am changing out the starter. I am no mechanic by any means, and I had this done in well under an hour. The top bolt gave me some trouble. I tried to use a wrench like in the video but found a short handle socket wrench did the trick for me. Thanks for the instructions.

Great job Jerry !!! I did notice something that others may have not noticed. When you installed the new starter , your bolts were nice and clean. Most people would skip that step of reassembly.

Love your videos, my starter from 2006 just took a shot, slow start like battery was dead but I have a Optima red top I bought in 2018 so it should be good and after testing at a battery store they knocked the starter while cranking and poof there is my problem. After swapping it out (less than 15 minutes) I'm good to go. Thanks again for your channel, subscribed for life.

Gotta say thanks for your tip about getting the top bolt off. I struggled with my straight drive for too long. I ran to Lowe’s and grabbed a flex ratchet and it came right off. Bad news is then starter I ordered from Advance was not the right one, even though it shows in their system. It has the wrong connection. Waiting for another starter to come in to finish the job.

Super helpful! Got my old starter out yesterday in about 30 minutes. Had to finagle my Breaker bar through the side to get the the starter bolts loose but I finally heard that crack and was able to use my flex stubby wrench to get them out! All cleaned up and ready for the new starter. Bout to put in now! Fingers crossed this solves the issue as I ran many tests before ending up with a jammed/bad starter verdict

After some testing with a multimeter signs still pointed to a jammed starter. Ordered a starter from 4wheel parts said it would fit my 65th anniversary edition 2006 Jeep Wrangler, it did not. Ordered the correct starter from AutoZone it arrived today. Installed in 15-20 mins and it fired right up! Mother fu(King beer time 🍺

Great Job with the video, just two tips: dont call the Solenoid switch "This" also remember, some starters are sold with no lubrication on the gear teeth or shaft, applying some type of durable grease/lubricant would help to make the new starter last a bit longer. Otherwise I think you did a great job with this, very clear picture and audio...

i am enthusiasticly watching this. so far mine looks nothing like this. i think drunk but hey it works, MacGyver touched mine. i have one oversized hex head (requiring lots of tiny open end turns as all around will not accept a socket) and an External Torx head (never heard of guess it did come with jeeps) that someone rounded off. id like to renew the bolts. is one head better than the other? i would think hex would be a more common tool if you broke down. thank you. very nice instructionals.

@monthlysurvey
@monthlysurvey 5 жыл бұрын
Intrade Motor we still use inches on bolts for a lot of things, most cars I’ve worked on here is the US including my wrangler have a combination of metric and SAE... which is rather annoying. To my understanding metric started becoming the prevailing spec in the early 80’s but on most cars even today I’m sure you’ll find at least a few 1/2 inch or 3/16 inch bolts.

Just a heads up, this is for an automatic trans. My manual looks a little different and the long bolt goes in the bottom/front bolt hole. Edit: it's also a different model starter, seemingly more expensive, for no good reason.
