DIY Kayak load assist

It is not easy to load a kayak on top of roof rack, there are some tools out there which cost much more money than DIY. The is a simple DIY project with two 4.5" suction cups and one 2" PVC pipe. You can made this tool in 10 minutes, less than $10 cost.

Harbor Freight has the suction cups for $5 each. The PVC pipe is also another $10 at Home Depot. I bought two 45 degree elbows to make side supports so the kayak doesn't slide off the side. I think my kayak is bigger and heavier than yours so that's why I went with the side supports.

This is brilliant. You could even add a third suction cup and a longer piece of PVC for a dual kayak setup. UPDATE: I tried it out on my wife's 2018 CR-V, but the rear spoiler is too long for these suction cups to clear the edge. I'll need to try a different solution.

Great idea. What did you use to cut the holes?

Make sure to use hole saw on both end, using oscillating saw for straight line. Don’t cut both end straight, because would easily crack on the 90 degree corner. Of course, make sure the hole width is bigger then the handle of suction cup.

I think so as long as you use heavy duty suction, not the one I used, too cheap. I want to buy a heavy duty one after mine broken. So far still working.

If you all notice...on all of these kayak load assist videos on KZbin, EVERYONE has an SUV or hatch type vehicle. Has anyone tried this on a standard or full sized sedan? I am concerned about a possible angle issue with the trunk/rear of the car. YES, one can probably just lay a blanket or towel down along the area where the kayak might scrape the car...but that then adds another 'step' in ease of this process. Any input?

love it , I have a sports car, so this should work great, funny story I slide the !^' into my hatch back up to the dash, backed into a garage door and put the kayak thru the windshield, told Ins. co. a rock off a truck did it
