CAPTAIN...remember, I have been a subscriber to your channel since the first time you wrecked one of Dirt Perfect's trucks and put my reservation in for at least a 2 day rental of the You Tube yacht when you broke ground. PLEASE keep me on the reservation list for the "limited" rentals. Quiet old man who will be a good guest just ticking off my bucket list. Thank you! Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving to you the Admiral and the girls.

My opinion would be to hold off on the new one. You don't "need" one right now with the option of using the neighbors. Keep an eye on marketplace especially after winter is over and you'll find them fairly inexpensive. If you find one that needs work, pick it up cheap. Make video of repairing it and maybe adapt it to use on the 304, similar to what Farmcraft101 did.

I bought a used log splitter and it has worked very well, and was several hundred dollars cheaper than new! I would definitely look for something with a fairly quick cycle, as the one you borrowed seemed awful SLOOOOOOW.

I don’t personally have a log splitter, but my dad does. His is like the one you are using with the exception of his has a tilt option on it. So you can either do bendy-twisty-lifty motions, or tilt the splitter ram to an upright position so that its more of a bendy-grunty-slidey motion and split them upright.

i made a log splitter for my 3.5 ton mini excavator. I bought an old log splitter and scrapped the engine, pump, valve and hoses and wheels. I only used the beam, wedge and cylinder. My brother and I went to the metal store and bought the 1/2" plate steel and 1-1/2" round stock for the pins and had hoses made for it for a total of $760. It splits like a pro and the pressure and flow of my Sany 35 is more than sufficient to split even the most dense wood. Plus, once you get the hang of it you can pick up the blocks and split it right into your truck or trailer. Having a splitter on your mini excavator is a tremendous labor saver and just a plain life changing attachment.

Hi Captain, Spend the $800 and have a permanent log spliter on staff. Also, no traveling to get it, no fuel, and rental fees involved! It was a great call to get the loan, especially if it was going to be a few years more to build it. Rotten materials to deal with. Most importantly, lost income you wouldn't have received for those 2 years!! As always, God bless you and your family from your very long-time California subscriber 🙏 🤲

John on Farmcraft put one on his excavator - not sure if he built it or modified one he had purchased previously. Looked like a good idea, maybe slower, but definitely a back saver on large diameter logs. You should have 3 sources of hydraulic power with the equipment you have, so you could look for a good deal on a used splitter with a bad engine and/or pump, then use the tractor, 555, or 304 for the hydraulic power. One other suggestion as someone who owned several acres of woods for the past 20 plus years - if you can find the time, try to do some forestry management for species and quality of tree. I was working 50-60 hours a week at my paying job, kids in all kinds of activities, built a shop and a house, and taking care of the normal tasks in life and just never had time to do much in the way of forestry management. I sure wish I had put the time into it as I would have a better looking and more valuable forest now.

@@CaptainKleeman That's great, and you're way ahead of where I was 20 years ago. I'll go back and look for some of those videos where you explain your strategy and process. The OCD in me though would ask why would you leave that tree with the "C" shaped trunk (at 27 seconds into the video and other times later) standing when you were right there with the excavator. Love your videos!

@VRM-uu3si yeah, it just takes time, and it we open up too much canopy at once, it let's the invasive take over. Have to leave some trees, even if not the healthiest, to hold cover while some younger hardwoods come up for us. It's a life long journey honestly

Glad you managed to get the Admirals Christmas Present, I've successfully not bought my wife any sort of present for about 35 years, we've been married for 42. I once bought her something which she kept on about, apparently it wasn't what she wanted, anyway to cut a long story short she now buys herself what she wants for Christmas and Birthday and I go without. I say that every six months I normally treat myself to a new power tool. Re the log splitter, to me the main benefit would be you could cut the logs when you need to, plus if your neighbours brakes down you could always lend them yours. Bet when you were moving that ash around, you wished that you hadn't broken that glass. 😂👍

I split around 8 cords a year for all the buildings and our older nieghbors. that type of spilter is just perfect. i never stand it up. i use the tractor to lift and roll any larger logs on it. when you get it done I'll come rent it some and put in one my channel. I hope that would help. we come up your way twice a year for several events. next year we will be doing two more closer to you. that's up to you mike.

Happy Thanksgiving Captain 🦃 My .02 cents, great decision getting the loan! It’s a huge project, and having the money just to buy all the material and move along at a steady pace, will save you time and money in the long run. Plus, you’ll be able to start renting the KZbin yacht out next summer, and it should more than cover it’s loan, while giving you a ton of content for the winter, and free you up for other cool projects like finishing up the plunge pole/shelter house project in the summer. And the sooner you have a proven track record of renting the KZbin yacht out, the sooner you can take out another loan against it, to build the next rental cabin in the woods 😁

Hopefully the build series can help your channel grow. Once the yacht is complete, a 90 min to 150 min compilation video that covers the build from start to finish will be a pain to edit, but is likely to get many more views and can attract lots more subscribers to hopefully put a dent in your loan. Good luck and God bless!

Hey Mike! I've been toying with the idea of building a log splitter myself, so please keep me updated as to what you figure out and find... I have a skid steer and there has to be a way to build something that can utilize the hydraulics, I would assume the same for the 555 ... For a stand alone unit, being that you are a handy guy, I would see a tremendous value in watching you build one!!! And as far as the YTY goes, I am super excited that it's back on! I can't wait to be able to come rent it!!!

Hey Capt. For how much you would use the splitter, I would recommend buying the discounted splitter you referenced and modify it to your needs. Although you could make one for that price, it would likely cost you more than $800 in time and materials and would have an unproven product. Given your relationship with C&C I would see what they have (or what they might be able to find for you, etc) as an option as well. Not sure your time frame for buying (if you have time to wait vs have an immediate need), it is always a good idea to keep your fellow youtube channel creators working with each other. Clint with C&C is just a good guy and I am 100% positive if he knew you were in need, he would find you something you couldn't say no to and if he can't he would advise you to proceed with something else. He has alot of relationships and if he can't get it done, he would likely know someone who could. Just my 2 cents and best of luck on your decision.

The new splitter, while more of a want than a need, would be useful. If you have the money, go ahead and buy it. For modifications, I'd suggest a set of diverter valves, like you'd have on an excavator boom for attachments, then you now have a portable hydraulic power pack that can be used for various applications. First one that comes to mind will be a tubing bender that would typically use an air over hydraulic bottle jack. Those are painfully slow, but you could instead use a hydraulic cylinder, powered by your new power pack, and greatly speed things up. A tubing bender would also be a great addition to your growing fabrication arsenal. There are plans available online, and you could even build your own....

Regarding the splitter question, if you have the 755 running, you could do a 3point mounted, or pull behind splitter that uses the remote valve, if it has one, you could buy a used splitter cheap with a bad engine and either run it off the remotes on the tractor, or use a PTO hydraulic pump ETA: if you have a healthy supply of firewood, it would make wood heat for the swimming hole a viable option.

I love that you are thinking about building one. If the deal on the new splitter is a good one, jump on it. Also, consider trading firewood as you horse trade for stuff. Even if someone wasn’t “looking” for firewood, you can sweeten your side if the deal to get more movement on theirs. Everyone can use a little firewood, or knows someone else who does. My favorite comment was the truth talking when you rationalized finishing your day in the seat. Therapy doesn’t get any better than seat time.

Log splitter: since you aren’t using wood for heat or selling firewood, I’d just keep an eye out for a used one. Maybe even let Clint know that you’re looking for a used one & he might find one on an auction. I found a “ran when parked” one about 20 years ago that needed some work for under $200. It was a rental unit at some point in its life, so not very pretty. It’s a 20-25 ton horizontal and still does great. Even with the repairs, I’m still under $200 into it. I’ve split a lot of wood with it & still use it today. KZbinr Farmcraft101, modified/built a unit for his excavator. Might check his build out for some ideas.

i have built a log splitter before and really you can build one for less than 500 bucks depending on option in my case we used a self level system off a rv which allows you to have 4 cutting/splittng option at once the one in our case was overly fancy because it had its own "computer" system with auto stop and such if you buy a little axle for a lawn mower trailer then place a beam of wood or railroad or some chunk of steel you can mount the rv jacks on it and boom log splitter all in all between 300-500 bucks happy thanksgiving mike

Captain, your work ethic never ceases to amaze me! Don’t go too hard on yourself for taking out the loan, I’m pretty sure if you put it out there as available once it’s done, there are a good number of your followers who would keep it booked out for the foreseeable future and help you pay off that loan in no time! I wish I could say a I was one, but flights from the U.K. are pretty expensive!!! Regards the splitter, do you still have that old cylinder from the forklift that you took apart? Could you cobble that with a hydraulic motor of some sort to make a splitter from it? Keep it up sir!!

Many years ago I used a log splitter like the one you borrowed. But like you too many rounds were heavier than a single individual could lift. Always thought about adding a hydraulic lift to the side running off the hydraulics to lift. If you may it right, it would also allow you to put the larger chunks onto as you split the smaller pieces and not have to re-lift them.

Mike, I'd buy a used one, like you want. You can get one fairly reasonable. The hydraulics almost never go bad - it's the motor that does. New motors are fairly reasonable, too. Get nothing less than 26 ton. Mine's a 32 year old, 26 ton, and I did put a new motor on it 2 years ago. I've split 100's of cords with it. Great video & Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Still waiting to see if you every try making charcoal. Firewood in my area is very restricted, must keep within the area it grew. Still live in the communist state of New York. Wishing your family the best and a happy thanksgiving. FYI the best part of a vertical splitter is you don’t have to lift the big blocks, just roll them to it. My splitter from the 80’s is returning to the environment last I saw at my sisters house. Vertical splitter built from tubular steel and a large I beam. The tubular frame is also the oil reservoir. The special element to my splitter is a security bolt that locks it up into the upright position to minimize theft.

Good priced machinery will be the better route,so you can use ,get the tasks over and done with, you shouldn't have to fix or repair it , store it away when not required.

For $800 if the splitter is solid construction with a decent motor I don’t think you could build one for $800 without accounting for your time and engineering. Spend your time on modifications. 3 mods I would add is a) stolid wings to support rounds as you are splitting, b) roll on lift mechanism, c) sturdy tongue jack with a wheel d) if required some shielding to protect engine and hydraulics from falling split pieces of wood. A decent designed wood splitter will last you a long time with basic maintenance and fluid changes if not used commercially. But for sure invest in some hearing and eye protection.

Cap’n you asked about DIY splitters… well, let me tell you about Frankensplitter. If it was 1988, and iffen you had a few spare parts…. - hydraulic cylinder from a 15 ton CAT excavator boom - 15HP gas engine from a Murray lawn mower - upright from an industrial shelving rack, long enough to make a frame - front axle and wheels from a 1962 - two ton farm truck - 12”X12”X8’ H-beam from an old county bridge demolition - PTO hydraulic pump and control valve from a 1950’s Farmall tractor - access to your Millwright neighbors fabrication shop You could build a log splitter that would develop well over 30 tons of splitting force… for under $400… in 1988 dollars! It would be uglier than a mud fence but as durable as a T-Rex fossil! Congrats on figuring out how to get the CKS YT Yacht ready to launch. I wish you calm seas and following winds as you set sail on this next leg of your journey. Holler if you think I can help in making it a smooth trip. Mike I was in the same boat about 5 years ago. Local store had them on sale just like your talking. I bought a 26 Ton. I paid 650 back then. I prefer to cut and split the wood on property that I have connections to. I used to rent a splitter, and it became more cost effective to change the oil and maintain then rent,(time to pick up, Time to clean and return). Now I have a deal that the splitter is stored on the property I cut wood on in a shed. If the $$$ is there it is worth it.

Looking forward to the KZbin Yacht finish, Mike… I suspect a lot of subscribers were attracted to the channel because of it . I don’t think the log splitter is a big item in the interest list as a KZbinr … we’ve seen lots of similar things on the web. You might just get a used one and repair it or if your neighbour will loan you his, just keep borrowing it as long as you give him some firewood or whatever he values. I do think building things are higher on my interest than a lot of other things…

Great content today Mike. Hmmm, personally I would hold off on the log splitter idea since you don't burn it, not too many others in your area do it would not really warrant an $800.00 investment. Super news on the KZbin yacht project though. Go man, go.

I remember my Dad and oldest brother building their own log splitter from scratch. They started with a 8’ section of railroad rail, a lawn tractor engine and a hydraulic ram from where I don’t remember. Knowing my Dad he didn’t spend all that much on the project, fittings and hoses were probably all he had into it outside of their labor. That was back in the 70’s. After Dad passed my brother continued to use it for another decade or so before he sold it.

26:00 mark, I have to AGREE about the vines not being conducive!!!! I swear I must have the LARGEST grapevines in the midwest! And these fines have made for some dangerous situations when cutting trees, as these vines dictate where the trees where fall, more so than the lean of the crown. The vines, AND THE HONEY LOCUST TREES, make my "woods working" quite the challenge.

That splitter is set up backwards. The ram should have the push plate and the splitting awl should be fixed. Then you can build an outfeed table. This arrangement really speeds things up. However, if you don’t split much, you can make it work. I have a splitter with a log lift, which really saves the back.

As far as the log splitter, those farm store splitters are fine in my book, they can and have been production splitters and most guys i know that heat with wood have one, I would if i had a place to store it, I’ve just returned to it this is my second year and I have been using mauls axes and wedges but I would buy one in a heartbeat. On the yacht, do what you gotta do, you got this brother. Blessings kleeman family and happy thanksgiving.

I made a splitter starting out with an old mini bike that had a 5 hp . Found an I-beam from an old grain elevator scale and bought a pump, cylinder and valve from Northern Tool. The rest was from my scrap metal pile. Think I spent about $150on parts back in 1985.

Excavator mounted splitter is an option. I have one, handy for the really big logs that you don’t want to lift. But unless you have an unused cylinder available you won’t beat $800.

I had a 4 ton electric log splitter I just love it and sold it for nearly what I paid for. It would split 20” long and as big around as you could pick up. Only one knotty birch stump I had a hard time splitting. I was amazed.

Outstanding, getting YTY done. I know about being nervous on financing, but sometimes, you just gotta go with your gut, it's almost always right, and even when it's not, it seems to work out okay. On the log splitter, only buy it if you use the 304 to load it, having spent the last 10 days at the house due to a re-injury from "lifty-twisty-turny-ouch" that originally happened 20+ years ago, I wish I hadn't "powered through" stuff like that. (But seriously, I've never gone wrong on purchase of a tool, even one that's used infrequently, because even if I only need it once a year, when I need it, I don't have to find one to buy, rent, or borrow.) I hope y'all have a great Thanksgiving, thanks for the video, take care.

Hi Mike, Happy Thanksgiving! With the amount of downed trees you have around you, I think a log splitter would not be a foolish or wasteful purchase. You could someday end up heating with wood like Neil does or if you are giving it away or maybe bartering, having it already split would be convenient. Plus, splitting wood is fun is an odd way and good exercise. Unless you already had some of the components on hand or could find them cheap, I think it would be hard to make a splitter for $800 or less. The 304 is a heck of a good log picker-upper! Good news about the KZbin yacht! Be good to see more on that as you continue building it.
