How to make a macrame rug! This is a tutorial on how to make a macrame rug using square knots and double half hitch knots.
Hi guys, I hope you enjoy this fun tutorial. This style of video is a little different from my normal tutorials, but I hope you still enjoy it.
New to macrame? START HERE: • 5 Most Important Macra...
💛 My Guide to Macrame: graywonders.retrieve.com/store
Materials:
- 5mm single twisted cotton rope. Cut 36 ropes about 23 ft (7 m) long.
**My rope is from Ket Mercantile: www.ketmercantile.com/listing...
Directions:
1) Fold all 36 ropes in half and attach to dowel rod (or any stick, we will remove it at the end) with a larks head knot.
2) Measure about 3-4 inches down from lark's head and mark with tape (this is the amount of fringe you will have).
3) Tie 3 rows of square knots (SK) under tape.
4) From the center, began tying SK to form a diagonal line to the left. You should have 16 rows (after the original 3).
-row 1-2: 8 SK -row 3-4: 7 SK
-row 5-6: 6 SK. -row 7-8: 5 SK
-row 9-10: 4 SK. -row 11-12: 3 SK
-row 13-14: 2 SK. -row 15-16: 1 SK
5) Repeat on right side.
6) From the center, create double half hitch knots (DHH) along the diagonal line on both the right and the left (this will make the top part of a triangle/big diamond).
7) Fill in the triangle with SK. Start in the middle with 1 SK, the next row should have 2 SK, then 3 SK, then 4 SK and so on.
8) Once Triangle is filled in, cut in the space for a small center diamond with square knots from the left. You should have 7 rows of SK for this.
-row 1-2: 8 SK
-row 3-4: 7 SK
-row 5-6: 6 SK
-row 7: 5 SK
9) Repeat on right side.
10) Tie DHH along the diagonal line on both sides of the smaller diamond.
11) In the center of the small diamond, create the fish-bone pattern. You will tie 13 SK around the 2 center ropes for this pattern.
12) Use DHH to finish the small diamond.
13) Fill in the outside space around the bottom half of the small diamond with SK on both sides. 8 rows on each side.
-row 1-2: 5 SK
-row 3-4: 6 SK
-row 5-6: 7 SK
-row 7-8: 8 SK
14) Tie 2 more rows of SK that go all the way across
15) Finish the bottom half of the rug by creating a mirror image of the top section. This time you will be filling the inside of the diamond (upside down triangle) first. Move from left to right.
16) Tie simple overhand knots along the bottom of the rug. I use sections of two, but you can gather as many ropes as you want. This is to help secure the rug and make the fringe look nice.
17) Remove project from dowel rod and cut the larks head knots apart (cut the center of the loops). Tie overhand knots as you did at the bottom.
18) Brush out the fringe and trim as needed.

This was my first time making a rug or anything like this, so I had to figure it out as I went. It was a journey as I had to start over a few times, but I am so in love with the end result. I was a little nervous to post this video as it’s not like my normal tutorials. But I still hope it’s a fun video and gives enough information for you all to make your own rug!! 💛

I enjoy you letting us accompany you on your journey of making your rug. PLEASE do more of this style of teaching. It is more of an in the moment experience and it help me learn without doing the rug at the same time. I learned from your experience. I may do the fishbone weave for the middle because I really love the way that looks. However, that may change when I realize how long that will take. Thank you immensely for doing the tutorial this way. Again, you are awesome!

@GrayWonders
@GrayWonders 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should be able to make this a bigger size. To make it 3 feet wide, you will need approximately 72 ropes. It’s a little harder for me to guess how long each rope should be measured, but I would guess about 28 feet. If you have left over rope you can use it for other projects, and if you run out of rope I have tutorials on how to add more. Hope this helps!

You should be able to make this with any material you wish, though it might look a little different from how mine turned out (just small details though). I think you should be able to wash it on a delicate cycle, I just worry about a machine pulling the knots apart. Someone else recommended using a mesh bag to machine wash. Hope this helps!! 💛

Hey, the rug is very nice. I made the rug! But it was difficult for the first macrame project haha. But I have 2 questions. Why did you choose 7 meters and not 6 or 5? And I have a lot left from the rug. Did you use the rest for something else? Thanx
@GrayWonders
@GrayWonders 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! To be honest when I made this I had to estimate my rope length since I’d never made a rug before, and actually used about 8 meters. Since I had some leftover, I gave another estimate for length and wanted to make sure I didn’t give a measurement that was too short. It’s always better to cute too much rope than not enough. It’s also possible your fringe was shorter than mine, or different rope can effect final length, and even how tight you make your knots can effect that. But yes, I always reuse my scrape ropes for other projects. You can make keychains, earrings, or use the extra rope as fringe in wall hangings. 😊

Hi! I’m a fellow maker…I’m looking for guidance on how long this took you to complete. I have a rug project coming up I’m trying to plan for 😊
