How to make your own bushcraft gear!
Hit like and subscribe for more content
In this video I discuss making your own bushcraft gear. I talk about my lightweight traditional scout kit that I put together with a self-made haversack and Russian Poncho Tent, the Plash Palakta. The total weight with water came out to only 10.5lbs.

Great vid! I really like to make stuff. My prized head gear is a hand made wool stocking cap my wife made me a number of years ago. It was HUGE, she felt horrible. I got excited knowing that the French made their berets way too big and then washed them in extreamly hot water. Its called felting. My hat fits just right and the weave is extreamly tight since it shrank so much. I love it for loads of reasons.

You are a natural at this stuff. One of the most underrated pieces of kit is the sewing kit. Hit up the thrift stores for needles and thread and in no time ya got kits for each pack.Quickie kit is to melt the plastic out of a spent shotgun round, take the brass and use it as an end cap for a second spent shotgun round. It will look like a double ended shotgun round with one end removable brass cap. Cheap and easy-peasey. I use upholstery thread. Thanks for sharing.

Outstanding helpful video. Excellent use of creativity and various materials for practical needs/uses. I first learned about Palanka in the Estonian Army. That material is outstanding. Yep your Spot on. Nothing like tall knee high Leggings/ Boots. Do you think your Deer hide leggings will protect from bites from Copperheads/ Timber Rattlesnakes? Experiences in the Wilderness as a Hunter, Soldier showed me that tall knee high boots/ Leggings are the way to go. I prefer tall lace up Snake boots.

There really is a satisfaction that goes with making your own gear. It's a one of a kind and custom fit. Commercially made gear is soooo expensive and at 6'5" & 235#, finding something that fits is a challenge. For myself I find that pullover outer wear gets way to warm... I much prefer an open front wrap around style for better thermal regulation. I'm even going to add an additional 12 inches to 2 sides of my Plash palatka and tie outs for a custom fit. Thanks for the video.. I'm subbed! Question... Are you affiliated with the pathfinder school?

Right on, if you'd like, I have a perfect piece of Russian military surplus that would be great for your overnights or just day trips. I've got 1 that I use, and 1 on the way from Russia now. (I got a killer deal) I've got a collection of European military mess kits, but I'd rather see it used than collect dust. So if you'd like, I'll send you one, either the one I've got now. (It's used but in great shape) or the one on the way. (It's new and probably still has the storage oil on it. It needs to be boiled to get rid of the oil). Your choice if you want it.

Zachary Thomason thanks Zachary! I checked out a few old hickory vids, but in the end, I just went for it. I cut it length and a rough shape, then followed the bevel of the blade up to the new tip with a file and eyed it up. Wasn’t hard, just a little time consuming. Go slow, and you should be good. I used a cutoff wheel, a clamp, 2 files, and sandpaper. gorilla glued the scales and pinned them with thick copper wire.
