+222JDA they do, I have the 19" Ultra hammered china from zildjian (a china known to be washy and loud) and I dampened it w/ gaffers tape. Really the only cymbals that sound good dampened are FX cymbals.

Note: If you bought 30 magnets for $15 the price per magnet is 50 cents, not 2 dollars. its 15 divided by 30, not the other way around.

Yo! I picked some of these up last week just because you roasted them so hard in this video. They're useful. Your sugru attempt was definitely closer to the actual product, but the meinls are covered in a pretty soft rubber. Works great for those especially ringing and powerful cymbals. They're able to keep their sound without sounding too dead. Definitely useful though, the magnets seem stronger than what you had as well.

Yeah, I thought of that, but seems like a lot of trouble, taking the head off etc., versus using a Moongel or a piece of tape.

Gretschnut Uh Magnets don't stick to bronze. These are made to stick to each other with the cymbal in the middle and would work in the same way with a drumhead.

Hey I've been using cymbal tuners for years, ever since I went from a 14" china to a 18" (the 18"'s sustain is just too much for some songs where I play quick accent on it). For a budget of 0$, I cut a vaguely round shape in an old piece of cloth and I put a hole in the middle, then I put it between my china and the top felt. It sounds much better than your magnets, it doesn't change the tone, it just decreases volume and sustain. Yes it's ugly (probably less with black cloth), yes you have to unscrew the top felt to put it on and off, but if you have a fancy quick realease wingnut it's quite fast. Try it David.

Maybe try flexible magnetic tape? Cheap stuff at stationary or hardware stores. Different lengths, positions (on the bell, touching the bell, no bell) and shapes (squiggles, squares, circles, dots)? I might give it a go after I get back from the Dollar Store to try your awesome moongel alternative. Keep up the great tutorials, I'm learning a lot!

I agree with your conclusions man. The best form of "cymbal tuning" is just to buy a different cymbal IMO or just use the cymbal that sounds right for the sound your going for. Muting cymbals can be cool as an effect. But the magnets don't really do anything you can't do with tape.

Whenever you mute/muffle something like a drum, guitar or other instruments, the high frequencies will get knocked out first. Muting is affected starting with high frequencies going down, with the more muffling you do. That is why these tuners (which really, muffle the sound) had more of an affect with higher pitched cymbals. Coated heads, double ply heads, o-rings, tape, etc. same-difference.

My opinion on these is that maybe they aren't meant for playing live at a gig. If you look up travis barker boat drumming or travis barker backstage drumming, you can hear that attack of the cymbal but no "crash and sizzle" to it.So my point is maybe they for people who want to practice in the bedroom or backstage and can't make too much noise. What do you guys think?

If the heatshrink tubing's too hard (and/or thick), what about some appropriately-sized silicone tubing? Y'know, big enough to fit around the magnet, but small enough to hold it tight. The kind of silicone i'm thinking of is that really soft, compliant, and almost sticky-to-the-touch kind.

I would try it on the actual bell of the ride. I use a 22 hollow logo ping ride and it will get away from you so I just use a 2x2 inch pad of toilet paper and masking tape. It touches an inch of the bow and an inch inside the actual bell. Does a good job of separating the playing surfaces sound wise.

BGaming Videos I use the rubbery plastic stuff some people use to line their cabinets like under drinking glasses or mugs. The same material is used under rugs to keep them from scooting. I cut the material in a circle an inch smaller than the hat and cut a tiny hole in the middle, thread the hole over the hi-hat rod and let it rest inside on the bottom cymbal. It doesn’t make a huge difference, but it is noticeable and it doesn’t dull the frequencies in an unpleasant way.
