Nice video. I'm finally doing this myself for Christmas 2023.

You'll want to use solid state relays instead of mechanical relays for rapid switching. Mechanical relays will over heat if rapidly switch, which will result in the relay welding itself to be always closed

I thought this was a very interesting subject on MIDI. Have you heard of a project called a SNES Music box? You can play .SPC files with your computer and interface with it via the parallel port on a PC. I thought this might be up your alley since you are interested in this kind of stuff as I am as well. Also, I do not know if this is possible, do you know about the SID chip from the Commodore 64 8bit computer? It is essentially the sound card of the computer. Can that be made into a USB version so people can make music using the 3 voices that it offers?

Thanks brother, I've been looking for something like this for quite a while, I am a drummer that uses electronic drums utilizing midi signals, I have been wanting to create individual lights for every single drum that I hit and control that with the midi for each instrument.

A lot of detail. Thank you for the thorough explanation, this is definitely encouraging to build something similar. Thank you for making this video 👍🏻.

This question is for indoor Christmas lights. Basically I have a bunch of battery powered strings of lights, different types, different configurations, different power requirements (i.e. 3- 1.5v, 2- 1.5v, etc.). Some are on my tree, some around my tv in a garland, some in wreaths, you get the idea. Is there a way to power these by my actual house power, and control the addressable lights’ colors? I’m not looking for any music/midi stuff. Just want to be able to power my light remotely, and to make the lights twinkle if possible.

Happy new year! Finally 2020 is over! Edit: The only good thing about 2020 is that I had a lot of time to do electronics!

So the mains power, that AC outlet that is wired up, is a double male ended extension cable that you plug from a wall outlet to that to supply power to all of the other 'extension cables' that are attached to what... the plugin ends that you plug the light strands into? So you cut off the male ends of however many light segments you want to have powered or controlled by a single relay?

Great idea to use optocouplers to protect your circuit. This is an incredible project! God has given you a great gift sir :-)

Hey, Quick question? Does this work as a dimmer.., so can you change the velocity of the lights with midi software like logic or ableton? I.e change the brightness as part of the midi programming etc? Also thanks for sharing this, I'm wokring on a similar music project using solenoids but I'm wanting to do a lighting project in the future too.

hi why my relays don't work and voltage supply is available ,just Arduino mega blinking during midi file playing ?

Why don't you just use a ESP32 or D1 Mini with WLED software to control lights?

I've got to rewatch this a couple times to fully grasp it but I have a question about the setup. Is it possible to play a song but send a midi version of that same song to the light controller simultaneously?

I am of the opinion that with so many switching on and off it is better to have solid state relays or thyristors.

How come you used relays over say a transistor, just power capacity?
