This is how I made a koi fish mosaic from broken Fiestaware. The border is made from broken Currier & Ives pieces.

Nice job, I think grouting would make it pop and then cover with epoxy if you want.

Could I put grout on and then the Glaze Coat? If so, what kind of grout do you use?

What a fantastic project! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've only done relatively small projects, but this method could be used as well. I'm also primarily used to grouting. This is something to try. Beautifully done!

I appreciate this style of mosaic where you fit your tile chips close together. It creates a wonderful effect. (I hate seeing too much grout...usually seen in hobbyist's mosaics). Lovely job. I've been thinking about using resin instead of grout, so I'm glad to see your project. Thanks for making this tutorial.

Beautiful piece! Use an old credit card--I noticed the card you were using was an old insurance card, they are just laminated paper which is why it came apart. Credit cards are solid plastic and won't do that.

Oh and always glue and screw hardi backer or cement board to wood then tile. Wood expands and contracts daily and will not keep the adhesion for long.

If you're going to tile on wood you should coat it wit wood sealer. Water + wood = falling apart eventually.

So the epoxy acts basically as a clear grout and creates a glossy top coat overall? Have you also used regular grout before? If so, what did you like/dislike about it? You did such a beautiful job on this and it's quite large! I think it'd take me foreverrrr...lol 😍
@jarachristensen8670
@jarachristensen8670 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm sorry I'm just now responding. Yes, it was a beautiful top coat and it turned out better than I could imagine. I've never used regular grout in mosaic form (I've used it to tile floors). I just didn't want to worry about making sure all my pieces were the same height for grouting. So maybe just out of laziness I used epoxy? 😊
@KMF3
@KMF3 5 жыл бұрын
@@jarachristensen8670 I don't think that you have to have them all exactly the same height. I've seen mosaics were the height of the pieces was completely different. For instance I've seen some mosaics that used kitchen utensils and the handles of coffee mugs. So it's entirely possible that you can not have a completely level flat surface. It might just take a little bit more time to carefully remove the grout from the higher items.

Vic I’m a newbie. I was looking for anyone who’s made a fairly recent post looking for some answers. I wonder if this person transferred that image from memory or how she transferred that image to the wood? I’m on my very first mosaic project (cement coasters) and trying to determine the easiest way to transfer an image to the stone coaster. Thank you if you happen to know!!

Instead of using the Piping Bag just use a plastic bag and snip off the corner. Much cheaper.
@teresaurkofsky8156
@teresaurkofsky8156 3 жыл бұрын
If you can afford it, a piping bag really is the way to go. The hole is centered in the conical shape and the plastic is sturdier. You can apply more pressure and work faster. If you apply pressure to a plastic bag, the hole is likely to stretch out and/or the bag breaks. There is a notable difference.

Hi! I did an epoxy coat on top to level off the dishes. I didn't even want to think about trying to grout it with different tile thicknesses. But overall I used mostly the same brand of dishes, fiesta wear. And only used the parts of the dish that were somewhat flat.
