THANKS, jshank. I appreciate your kind comment. However, I can't ever use the "made up adjective" that rhymes with awesome again because my major competitor in the US moss industry decided to copyright it and threatened me. I started using the term many years ago way before them but I never dreamed I would need to copyright this word. Big boys trying to squeeze out the little biz entrepreneur. I've learned a hard lesson about people who would rather create roadblocks instead of collaborating to promote moss gardening together. --Mossin' Annie

Hey Catalina, Thanks for your comments. MOSS lovers, like you and me, live all around the world. I noticed moss in a news story this week in Kate's new children's garden. I follow several bryologists that live in the UK, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. YES, we keep busy at Mountain Moss rescuing mosses from places where they will be destroyed. This week, we gathered Atrichum angustatum and Leucobryum glaucum moss species from a gravel driveway that was planned for paving and a septic tank area. Cheers from the mountains of western North Carolina, US. -- Mossin' Annie

By now, I hope that you've started the process of getting rid of the grass and encouraging the existing mosses in your lawn to thrive. You can rake the existing moss into vacant places in the grass to help mosses spread. Of course, if Mother Nature doesn't provide enough moisture, supplemental watering will increase the growth rate. -- Mossin' Annie

Just moved into a mobile home park in GA, having lived all my former 55 years in California (just turned 56 on May 30) - where moss doesn't normally grow except maybe in the most northern forests - and am DELIGHTED with the natural moss that grows around my home! It's been pretty wet, so it's growing like gangbusters out in the shady back area, and I am hoping to get more of it to grow in this bare patch by my deck, out front. Just transplanted a little yesterday to add to the little that was naturally growing, and am really happy to see I mostly did it right! :) I have a dozen or so ceramic mushrooms I've collected over the years that I added to hopefully provide a little protection from the sun on summer days. I won't have the option or ability to create such a beautiful fairy garden like you have, here in the park, but I can have my tiny moss oases!! So happy my husband just happened upon your channel! We both subscribed! You are a joy to watch and to learn from!

I discovered moss earlier this year even though it's been around since the Ordovician era! I bought your book recently and I am hoping to make a trip to NC soon to visit your moss business. I love your voice and manner of speaking. It's charming and soothing as other posters mentioned. In March this year, I created two moss gardens under some oak trees on my property. They are thriving with almost no effort on my part. I just spritz with water twice daily and the moss has exploded in growth and beauty. It must really like where I've re-homed it. @MossinAnnieMountainMoss 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chromedaffodils... love your "name." Daffodils are my favorite flowers. Look for rescue opportunities... places where houses will be renovated or torn down; roofs; edges of parking lots... to find mosses. Please don't go to the woods unless you own the property or have permission. Definitely, don't "steal" from our protected parks and forests. I did a rescue last weekend from the Interstate buffer zone next to a car dealership. This week, I rescued from a location where the cottage was being torn down and the grounds destroyed in the process. We got 10 sleds of Hypnum! If you want to start your own "herbarium" collection (that's what dried mosses in ID packets are called at universities), you can start collecting different species. You could purchase your own close-up lens or jeweler's loupe to take a closer look at the tiny botanical details of bryophytes. Your challenge will be trying to identify your species. My bryophpyte ID kit eliminates the need to determine species. If you are a home-schooler, then the ID kit could be a project and lesson to share with other home-schoolers in your town. It really fun to check out the intricacies on moss plants and teach the students about the oldest living plants on Planet Earth! Thanks for your comments. All Best, Mossin' Annie

Thanks for taking the time to comment on this video, Jose. Indeed, moving rocks should be treated seriously with concern for proper personal safety. If you are picking up a rock, it is best to plant feet firmly and squat with your back straight while lifting. In some cases, I will use a sled to slide piles of rocks to intended locations... amazing how many heavy rocks can be moved easily this way. Most times, I ask one of my assistants who is much bigger and stronger than me to move feature rocks. Sitting boulders must be moved with a skidsteer or a tractor with a bucket. In this case, although I wouldn't have been able to stand up and carry this particular quartz rock hidden under the decorative Acer tree (miniature Japanese maple), I was able to scoot it around because the ground was muddy and I could slide the rock okay. One definite safety concern would be my footwear -- heavy boots are much wiser than flip-flops. --Mossin' Annie

Hey Mandie, I was just in Charlotte last week doing some seasonal moss maintenance at one of my successful moss installations. Brevard is not that far away from you. Maybe one day you can come shopping at my Mossery or once the health situation improves, I'll be offering moss workshops again. In the past, I've taught a number of classes as part of UNCC's Botanical Garden native plant certification series. If you want to learn more, autographed copies of my book are available through my Web site: www.mountainmoss.com. --Mossin' Annie

Oh yassss, Bing watching you. Thorough and sooooo cute. Are you close to Tennessee? I got lots of moss and ferns for ya, in my yard. I need your wisdom! Question....mixing the different mosses, does it eventually make a hybrid? Also do I need to leave space for the moss to grow? What about the ones I want on the table for show? Do they just stop growing or grow taller? My favorite moss is the stuff that grows in cracks that’s real soft and condensed. The only moss that’s not in my yard 🥺. I snagged some this weekend. Just enough for a small pot. I want to grow a lot of it. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the video. Is it okay to use tap water to keep the moss moist? I heard that the chemicals in it can kill the moss.

It took me a whole summer to pull out the grass on the hill by my house. I gradually planted moss which was so green and pretty. Hubby sprayed it with 2 and 1/2 oz. of roundup per gal of water. this past spring to kill the weeds. (Didn't tell me). He didnt thinking would kill the moss. Moss is now brown and yellow. Can I save it? Weeds are coming up just fine now through the yellow moss. Please help.

Hey Kevin... You can buy LIVE, fresh, ethically-harvested and cultivated MOSS from ME -- www.mountainmoss.com. If you like my videos, I will appreciate your support of my small business in the mountains of NC during these challenging times. You might want to order my book, too. As for species for Florida, I suggest Leucobryum, Entodon and Atrichum angustatum as options. There are many versatile moss species that can tolerant the heat index of sunny Florida. Thanks for asking. I'll appreciate your support. -- Mossin' Annie

Follow up to my previous reply... I actually wear Italian leather high heel boots when I'm rescuing mosses from steep hillsides in the woods. I wear purple Keen's when I climb up on roofs. But, most of the time, I'm wearing my purple leather fairy boots. --Mossin' Annie

Hey Shetasen... I would be overjoyed to visit a temple moss garden in Japan. However, my dreams would come true if I could work alongside the moss tenders instead of strolling through.
