Nice in a pinch!! I simply drilled a whole in a block of wood, and use a paint brush handle for the mandrill. Paint brush is perfect size for my 44 cal. Load's..

Very interesting method. I'd be rather excited to see a more in depth explanation. I think I see what you are getting at but I want to be sure. Who knows maybe id make a video about it!

lol those flasks throw a pre-determined amount of powder. you don't need the measure if you know what it throws.
@davidcameron39505 жыл бұрын
Right. If you premeasure you dont need one. But the flask is helpful if you want to do a bunch. Or are new to the hobby.
@Name-ps9fx4 жыл бұрын
Technically it’s not the flask, it’s the screw-on nozzle that does the measuring... 1. Put your fingertip over the opening 2. Open the thumb-valve, tip the flask filling the nozzle 3. Release the valve, turn right side up and remove fingertip from nozzle 4. Pour nozzle contents into cylinder/paper cartridge. There are several nozzle sizes for everything from a .31 to some rifle loads.

watching this! I bet this is JUST HOW our Ancestors did this in Candel Light!! I "might?" try to dip my finished ball in my heated bore butter! I like Simple! just made up some for an 1863 with Minie's and primers all in one ready to go. but the Minie has a protective cavity for my primers and is 180 away from charge while separated with a string chocker and a 500 grn Minie. Love it GREAT! Thanks.

Muzzle loading and reenactment must be very popular in my area. I see those papers being sold in most local variety stores.😀

With the correct volume tip on the flask, place your index finger over the mouth of the flask, press the flask valve open with your thumb and invert the flask to allow the tip to fill. Release the valve and turn the flask back up and the tip should be full of powder. Now just pour it into the paper.

I've tried making cylindrical cartridges like yours, but I find they don't load well in my 1858 Remington repro (Pietta). The tapered ones I've made (wrapped around a half inch dowel tapered to 3/8) work better, with the powder in the small end and the ball forming the large end. The small end loads more easily into the chamber mouth.
@davidcameron39508 жыл бұрын
This makes sense considering the funnel action the tapered dowel would make. That's a really good idea. Thanks for the comment!

I just got a Thomson center white mountain carbine for my 18th birthday and I perfer using paper cartridges bc you don't have to measure it in the measuring flask and its a little faster
@russellkeeling4387 Жыл бұрын
Buy a flask tip that measures the correct volume of powder and don't pour from one measure into another. Flask straight to paper with the correct screw in flask tip.

Don't do that with the cap, likely to forget it and load it with the cartridge if you are lucky and they don't detonate.
@adventchild51508 жыл бұрын
Is it dangerous to store the percussion cap like that? Seems a little sketchy.
@davidcameron39508 жыл бұрын
I have never had a problem with a percussion cap going off due to the nature of a percussion caps mechanism of action. You need a fair amount of force to activate the primer. But then again its never a bad idea to be cautious. Id say if you are really concerned just leave that bit out.

Shouldn't there be a wading between the powder and ball?

Isn't it a good idea to put an equal amount of cream of wheat as the gun powder for filler. For safety? Then some crisco or bore butter, etc. on top.

what diameter is the powder measure? .I see its smaller than the ball.

So I have a powder measure that was sold to me as one for a rifle it goes up to 120 grains is that bad to use in a pistol? I know it's a stupid question but I have a concern about the width of the one you used there being considerably skinnier than the one I'm holding with the spout on the end
@davidcameron39504 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. Using a dowel or something to wrap the cartridge paper around you could easily measure out what you need and just very carefully pour it in the sleeve.

Does the cigarette paper burn up completely?
@ralphmalph68247 жыл бұрын
Best for clean combustion are rice papers(Clubs, etc...many state "rice paper" on label). Zigzags and other wood pulp papers that come with a tin of tobacco are not as recommended in my opinion...that said, it may not matter considering the heat will be much hotter in a firing chamber, than from a smoking perspective.
