I think you did a great job and I picked up many great pointers. I give you a lot of credit for taking this job on. I'm sure many wondered how much you have in your project my guess is 1500 - 1800 in materials which I'm thinking would cost approximately $4,500 if you had an outside contractor do it. Excellent job. Don’t always need landscape fabric. You can spray the ground first before you put the rock down instead with some type of chemical. Landscape fabric over time starts building moss and can build grass in that and it will start popping up.

I did all you are doing plus the landscape fabric around the perimeter or my above ground pool. The fabric was no help. I still battle weeds and grass growing through all my layers. Cardboard then sand, then fabric and topped with gravel. Complete waste of time and energy. Next time I worked on that type project I went straight for the roundup. I killed the ground beneath completely before I graveled and that method proved much more successful. Your patio and pit look AWESOME btw and I love that you all made it a family project.

A stupid question from a guy born and raised in NYC now living the good life in the country. Why can't you just lay landscaping paper on top of the grass and build from there versus digging out the entire area? We have some logistics issues with hauling all the dirt and grass away. And if this is a totally ridiculous question don't hesitate to say so :)
@PatriotDIY
@PatriotDIY Жыл бұрын
The goal here was to me at or just above ground level. You could go on top but you may end up 4+ inches above the ground.

another main reason to remove the grass is to eliminate grass or weeds from popping up through the weed barrier. In my experience that stuff is junk and pointless since it breaks down over time and weeds just poke right through. Now imagine your beatiful gravel with grass and weeds poking through in patches. Do it once, do it right! 😊
@sociopathmercenary
@sociopathmercenary 5 ай бұрын
If you're going to do it that way, use driveway lining fabric instead of weed barrier. It's a couple mils thick and will hold up a lot better over time. One other reason you want to dig out the grass and topsoil is that it's really loose and compactible so you're probably going to get some spots that sink
@r.rodriguez4991
@r.rodriguez4991 4 ай бұрын
That would be nice but for one thing grass doesn't provide a good base for a patio. You need a fairly solid foundation underneath. And to make a foundation like that requires height, about 4 to 6 inches. You'll need a few inches of base gravel to provide a good platform for the top layer of gravel you want to use which will also be a couple inches thick. So if you leave the grass you'll end up having to build the edges up to suit the height of all your layers. You'll have a patio that sits 4 to 6 inches above the ground with a few layers of brick or pavers along the edge. It'll look like a fancy sandbox rather than a patio.

@harleyburton2413 really? Lol the aerator and tiller was just to loosen my hard ground, you don't need them, it can be done with any aerator or no aerator at all, you can use a wheel barrow instead of a trailer or tractor, and yes...a shovel. If you were expecting me to do it with just my hands im sorry i dissapointed you! I'm pretty sure a saw a video of a couple Indian kids building a pool in the jungle with just a stick....maybe thats more your speed?

@@PatriotDIY Look, I think you've got a little more excited about my comment than is warranted, but while we're here, yes, you could do it with less. In fact, you COULD do it with your hands if you wanted to, but my point stands. Your DIY channel has equipment that isn't standard for the DIYer. And when someone makes a comment on a video where you are using a tractor a fourwheeler and a 4x4 and your response is "a shovel?" you may be out of touch. Use what you have. Do what you want on your channel. Heck, choose to contract it out and video that. It's your channel. BUT, don't get upset when someone notices you have more equipment than the majority of us. I still truly don't understand how that comment upset you even.

Should be titled how to mess up stuff... i had to keep watching the train wreck. Sand under the edging to level it? How about Mortar/concrete level and they stay inplace... sand shifts first time its wet Concrete slab under fire pit? You could just let it be gravel and set pavers with Concrete atop the gravel base layer. I was like hes not puting down a barrier layer... works till dusk and realizes he didnt put down barrier layer.... at that point I was done... Do not follow this methodology
@PatriotDIY
@PatriotDIY 11 ай бұрын
It's been fine for 2 years now, edging has stayed exactly where it's supposed to be. And yes the concrete under the fire pit makes cleaning it out super easy. I never claimed to be a professional landscaper/hardscape installer, but what i did works, and has held up well for us. If you think It should be done different awesome...get out of my comment section and go do it.
