DIY Pencil Holders 4 Ways | How To Make Wood Pencil Holders

The first of a 4 part (and maybe more?) series on DIY Hexagon Pencil Holders. Great small shop projects. This was a fun woodworking project all about taking a simple idea and finding ways to elevate and make it unique. From a simple hexagon for beginners, to more advanced and artsy projects in the upcoming episodes.

Pen and pencil holder tip #1: Cut a piece of heavy gauge plastic (I use the flexible translucent plastic cutting boards) and drop it in the bottom of the holder. Don't make it a tight fit so that it's not difficult to remove. This protects the inside bottom wood from the inevitable marks and other damage from pencil points and pen nibs. Pen and pencil holder tip #2: When in use, fill the holder about 10 - 15% full of small dried beans like black or navy beans or black eyed peas. Or any other small, light, moderately inflexible objects (but not hard; no glass marbles or balls from bearings.) Very interesting, and giving me some ideas. BUT, nore importantly, what do you think of that Bauer planer from Harbor Freight? I'm getting to the point where a planer would be beneficial. Is this one worth considering?
