I’m also going to make my own DYI for a water change that won’t waste tap water to drain out the dirty aquarium water, using this idea and a long hose similar to Aqueon’s hose. I’m just going to put the power head in the sink, with some water, of course!

Thank you so much for making this video! I have been looking for a way to make a gravel vac with a powerhead; I tried making the one that a mega-popular you-tuber demonstrates and it only works 50% of the time. His project has the powerhead remaining on the outside of the tank and you have to start a siphon on the output hose before turning on the pump and quickly jamming the hose into the tank to avoid spilling water everywhere. I wanted to make one with the pump IN the tank, and you just nailed it with this video!! I can't wait to make your brilliant version!!

Dear Angelo: This build looks like a fun project. I recently contacted my, municipal, water treatment facility to see what they use to make water potable. I was pleased to find that they use chlorine rather than chloramine. It's important to complete frequent, water changes. Basically, the more often an aquarist does them, the more healthful it is for the fish. On the other hand, the more intervention an aquarist makes to an aquarium, the more stress he places on his pets. So, if I'm going to use a water vacuum, I want to replace as much water as possible while putting as little stress as feasible on the tank inhabitants due to changes in water parameters. I have to balance frequency and amount of water changes with stress on the pets and plants. Thank you for showing us how to build and use this, terrific implement. It would be especially useful for heavily stocked tanks or particularly messy fish such as goldfish or plecostomus. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
@AngelosFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
That’s so awesome Brinegar. I may try contacting the city here. Now you have me curious lol. It is very true it’s all a balancing act. We just hope to land in the middle. Your right It would be amazing for heavily stocked tanks where heavy gravel vac’s are needed.

Alright I ran into some problems. Need clarification do you close off air valve or just place intake sponge over it? Sponge seem to not want to stay on. Suction wasn't the best some debris would come up but not to polyfil. Seems like polyfil will clog up and stop flow. My power head is 350 gph. Tubing length is there a certain length? My length is 48". May be too long. Please help. Thanks.

Im interested in making one of this. But tbh I dislike the idea of the powerhead inside the tank, i know they are meant to be inside it anyway. Just I dont like it. (I want it to clean the bottom of a fish tub in my backyard) will it work if I plug a hose in the output of the power head? so the only parts in contact with the water are the input (siphon) and the output (the plain hose dumping the water back in the tank) like using the powerhead more like a regular pump. any advice? Thanks in advance
