DIY Pressure Treated Fence Posts

To treat your own fence posts so that they will not rot in the ground you will need to burn the end that goes in the ground six inches past ground level and coat it with motor oil and diesel fuel mixed at a 50/50 ratio.
This is how we made our own DIY pressure treated fence post s for our garden.

I don't know if you will see this so long after posting, but there is a way to make the posts last much longer without filling the hole with concrete. From experience I have found that only the top 8-10" is where most of the rot happens, so if you just dig the dirt away from the post like 2" all around for 8-10" down and fill that area with concrete, you will greatly increase the life of the post, and that small amount of concrete is much easier to remove than concrete all the way to the bottom.

Get a torch for burning down rubber roofs. Always set your corners plumbed, level and brace before tension any corner. Also put some gravel to keep ends off wet soil and dip ends in tar to keep post from being a straw.

Here's an idea for you. Next time you need posts and have a burn pile just put the ends of your posts into the fire and let them smoulder - turning regularly until they are "Sho Shui Ban (ed). Simples - saves on Propane and burning torches too! :)

Awful lot more work than a conventional standard of doing things... If you keep your post from sitting in water they will last a long time, but in dirt you guarantee doing this possibly every season or every other season... Tar the post that will be incased in cement, your cement should be above ground surface so water doesn't sit on the wood cement transition, clear silicone the transition, add a few coats of water sealer, those post would last at least ten years... Just saying, termites would eat them up once that diesel washes off, plus you invite more wood eaters into your home perimeter... No bueno...

Jerome Garcia the guy lives in the forest, there is going to be wood eating bugs regardless of the posts. Also, his posts will last close to 10 years the way he is doing it, he just needs to make sure the treated wood is at least 6” above the finished soil grade when finished. Farmers/ ranchers have been using this method for nearly a century with good results.

I would suggest you use 45 degree angle braces for the corners. That is the only way you will keep your fencing tight.

I did not know about burning the post, that is a new one on me. I have the same setup as you w/ the torch & a 1 gal. LP tank for much less that way. Also your dirt must be better to dig then here in south Idaho. You have a tractor so maybe rent a post hole digger w/ a 3 point hitch. Don't want you to over do it w/ that hand digger. Bruce

Bravo on the oil and diesel fuel treatment. Glad to see you used that old farmers trick. A lot cheaper than commercial water seal. As an added step you can coat over the oil and diesel with roofing ashphalt. Be sure it is ashphalt base and take the treatmentabout 4-6" above ground leve. Reference Pete B. channel. Those post will still be standing after we are long gone.

in denmark we have used tar gauze. to utilize gas and water lines. when they were made of iron. tar is now banned in Denmark. HEJ

A lot of rot can take place from the top of the post as well from rain water and snow setting on a level cut. Some people put a piece of sheet metal on the top and bend over an inch or so down the sides and hold them on with small nails. I chose the easy route on my posts and cut them at about a 30 degree angle. The treating you have done to the bottom of the posts would certainly help also.

There is also a liquified rubber you can get that is normally used to waterproof foundations. That could work too.

You need a tiger torch (roofing torch) or a fire and rotate. The only other thing you could have done to make it even better would to add a bitumen shrink wrap post sleeve 4” above ground and down. If you were using treated posts with the char oil and sleeve the post would last 80 years. Loved the video by the way! Concrete would rot the post faster as well

I have one. It definitely works but those small canisters are only good for a couple refills cuz the rubber seals don't last very long and start to leak.

Okay, so I cut my own poplar trees for post, 3 inch in diameter roughly, bit more maybe, and they are now growing limbs with leafs 🤷‍♂️. I chainsawed the bottoms to make a point and also burnt them with a torch. So, are they growing roots do you think, I think it really adds to the fence around our garden. I’m thinking that if they are growing limbs then, they won’t rot

Hi Back a few years ago I built a fence & tho it was pressure treated Id had issues with another fence rotting after a few years . Since alltheposts were 3 1/2 inches square I bought some of the plastic corrugated pipe & put it over the post then into the ground . I also made sure I had the pipe bout 4 inches higher than the ground to kind of protect it from being chewed up by the weedeater . Im thinking thats where a lot of the rot started aty anyhow . But so far its holding up good after I think 10 years

The city used to dump thousands of gallons on the gravel roads for dust control. We figured it is all natural and it came from the ground. Plus in all my years I have learned one thing. Safety is an illusion.

I have watched a couple of others that that are using trees that they cut down trimmed and then built a round good size fire pit and then took 3 to 4 of the trees and burned the fence posts a couple of feet up from the end and drop them in the holes .wouldn't that work a little faster to put them up especially since you're still painting them with your formula!!!!

I would recommend you toss small fist sized rocks into the hold and hammer them down with a tamp. It would be a stronger support than plain dirt.
