Hi. Great video, however can you please show how wheel installation looks like?
@ejdavis729 ай бұрын
I have a Shimano Deore XT front hub and after just spreading the fork a little bit while installing the wheel it was a perfect fit without the washers, rotor fit perfectly and brake adjusted like before. Crazy that the Shimano Deore XT quick release hub works with both! I had to loosen the caliper to give it enough wiggle room while spreading the fork and popping the hub into the fork holes but after that, it's like the hub was made for it.

True, this is the only video I have seen with this subject.. I have installed my qr wheels on my thru axel frame and it runs fine..

How will this mount into the fork?
@jamesaron19676 ай бұрын
@@bingooscar1768 This video is misleading or the information is incomplete. I tried mounting a standard QR wheel to a thru-axle fork on a road bike (12x100) but it didn't work despite both having the same spacing (100mm). First, thru-axle dropouts are very thick and the front QR skewer was too short to clamp the hub on the fork. A standard rear QR skewer is too long and can't be used either. Second, even if you manage to find a skewer with an appropriate length there's still a lot of play _inside_ the dropouts. The lock washers mentioned in this video are not intended to be inserted into the dropout hole, so nothing keeps the axle from moving within the 12mm opening. I advise against this method unless a resilient metal sleeve of precise dimensions can be found or made and inserted into the dropout opening to secure the axle and eliminate play. You'll still need to source a proper length QR skewer to tighten the hub onto the fork. Don't do it unless a suitable adapter is ever made available.

@@jamesaron1967 I attempted this, but stopped coz the dropout area of an aluminum or carbon build may be damaged by the sharp edge of a split steel 'lock washer'. Spreading fork and/or frame of an aluminum or carbon bike may cause additional problems due to inherent stiffness and lack of elasticity - of those materials compared to steel frame.

@@terryduncan8979 Yes, that is also a potential issue but why not use standard flat washers instead of lock washers? In my case, the main problem is the difference between the diameters of the two axle standards. I wanted to install a brand new QR front road wheel for a road bike with a thru-axle frame. They both have the same 100mm spacing, but the dropout hole is 12mm whereas the QR axle is 9mm. See the difference? Even if I manage to source a long enough QR skewer what is to prevent movement inside the dropout where there's a 3mm difference? A tiny amount of play would cause the disk brake to be misaligned... In any case, I don't see a technical problem to come up with a good solution. All that is required is a metal sleeve to fill the difference in axle diameters and a long enough QR skewer to secure the wheel onto the thru-axle dropout. Those who want to install wheels with dissimilar dropout spacings could use washers to make up for the difference. I'm a little surprised no company has released an adapter kit considering the number of people who would want to do this. Maybe it's a concern for liability in case something goes wrong.

Can you make a video of how you'd actually install these? I'm thinking of getting a cargo bike that only has threw axle front forks when I already own a very nice set of qr carbon composite sealed bearing mags. Thank you.

I rode 4000 miles On a loaded tour bike with this method. No issues whatsoever. Just make sure you don't lose your washers when you change a flat.

Bought the washers, tried to install the wheel, but since the width of the QR hub is slightly wider than the TA hub, I had to have someone pull the fork apart while I slid the wheel in place. The result was fine, but I'm now worried I won't be able to install it myself if I have to change a flat out on the road. Not sure if others have the same experience, or is it just my QR hub that is slightly wider than the TA?

Hello, I am wondering whether I can use the same M10 split washer for a fork with 15mm thru axle with blade space distance of 135mm. Or I need different size washer?

No it won't. No it won't. The skewer has nothing to keep the axle centered. The 15mm thru axle hole is much larger than the skewer.

This works but carbon frame will keep the wheels în place because of the surrounding material of the frame around the washers and the presure you put on the qr What happens if the wheel splips and rupture that material? You can make a tiny cilinder to fill the gap between the qr axle and the interior of the drops,' of the frame somehow Again the frame has a concave contact point between the bolt and frame on the part it îs tighten and a thread on the mother part this soluțion may work may not
