Thank you. I will be building these this spring. I have a large stack of metal roofing already and planned on using them for this project. I was mulling over how to frame it. Lol this is a lot easier than what I had planned. Tgank you for simplifying my life. Haha

I have to think that composite decking would be a good option instead of cedar or pressure-treated. I know it's expensive but it would never rot and I don't believe any chemicals leech out of it.

Very true! I may have to test that out!

I was just pricing out using composite deck boards (solid) for the top piece. Looking forward to building one of these!

Cadmium leaches from galvanized tin once the soil causes degradation. Cadmium is like Mercury

If you use too many logs in the bottom, you run the risk of them sucking the nitrogen out of your soil while they decompose (nitrogen sequestration). They can take many many years of removing your nitrogen to decompose in the bottom of the bed. Leaves are a better idea.

Simon, love the plan but the martials list is a little lacking. You list 2 1/2 deck screw on the plans but say 3" in the video but neither work the way you put it together could you please clarify

I thought the same. Would need at least a 4” screw

Hi Simon. We've got our boxes mostly built but having trouble finding the material you used to seal the seams. Can you tell me what that is specifically? All the sticky roofing material we find is too stiff. Thanks!!

I used ice and water shield. It’s a rubbery texture. Hope that helps! :)

@@SimonSaysDIY thanks. We can't find what you used in stores so will have to order it. I guess it doesn't get cold enough in California!

The location that I want to build on is on a slight slope. How do you recommend dealing with this? Should I just build it square and have it slope with the grade? Water & soil would wash out some unless I sort of terrace the bed 🤔. I’m too tired to think this through right now. Maybe one of y’all have dealt with this and can let me know what you did and how it turned out.

Hey, I live in Western NC-red clay and know what you mean. I am thinking about one of these next spring. I had one question. With all the logs in the bottom and the insulation of the dirt, does the bed attract snakes?

I’m doing this in a few weeks. How tall are your beds? Should I get the metal roofing from Lowes/Home Depot or is there someplace better/cheaper?
@SimonSaysDIY

Mine is 2ft tall. I purchase the roofing at lowes and it was already 2ft wife and worked perfect for the garden bed! :)

Simon - is there a material list for your beds? Also, what height do you make these beds? Do you have a mod to make them self watering?

I have build plans and materials list available on my Patreon page. Link is in the description. I’m working on building a watering system for this season but it’s not ready yet.

You put a top support in the middle of the bed yet you didn't put one on the base like you had in another video. I see in the final shots you added a spike to the outside middle base I assume to stop bowing. Why didn't a base support beam get put in this one?

I built this one with a friend and he didn’t want soil to have any contact with pressure treated lumber. He chose regular pine across the top and sealed it with stain. He wanted to skip the bottom support. I would recommend using a support at the bottom like a treated 2x4 or a galvanized threaded rod holding the two sides together. Thanks!

Is that galvanized metal? If it is, is that safe to plant food in? Just wondering if the nickel will leach into the soil

If fruit heavy plants are used like peppers and tomatoes there is no way they will stay standing on their own. Nowhere near enough depth to root. I didn't till the soil one year trying not to upset the biome the soil wasn't too packed. Every single heavy plant need supports to keep from tipping at the base.

Thanks so much! Supports will likely be used for any taller plants like tomato’s. They grow like weeds here and can easily reach 6ft if not pruned back.

Simon, I have to say I was very angry with you yesterday. I became a patron up so I could access the plans. Saturday, I cut all the wood and metal so that yesterday I could put together the beds. I particularly liked your plans as it was 16 foot by 4 foot. In the the plans mentioned 2 1/2 in exterior screws to screw the 2 X 4s together. When trying to put together the frames, you show screwing through the 4ft section of 2X4 into the 19 inch section. But 2 1/2 inch screws of course cannot reach through the 3 1/2 inch board into the shorter board. In the video you mentioned that you used 3 inch screws, but again, the way you are fitting the 2X4 boards together, this will not work. I am debating trying to use 4 inch screws or trying to toenail the ends together. However, I have a few weekend projects going on at the moment so I'll have to try again another weekend. If I am misunderstanding the instructions please respond.

Angeline Medina did the 4" deck screws work? I was wondering if counter sinking the screws would work also. i would love to know what worked for you
