DIY Rocking Horse

In this video I show how to build a simple rocking horse that my son loves to play with! Below is the link to download a set of plans and a printable template so you can make this rocking horse too!

If you have access to a large format printer (some libraries have them, if not a UPS or FedEx office will have them) that is the best way. Otherwise you can print the template out on 8x11 of 11x16 paper. Just make sure to print it at 100% it will print across multiple pages and you can tape them together.

I built 2 from your plans. Made a couple changes by adding a wedge between the legs and the body so the legs would have more spread where they attach to the rocker. Thank you very much for the design. The grandson loves his horse and I'm sure the great-grandson will love his.

Thanks for sharing your plans. They were excellent. I actually made templates out of 1/4" hardboard so I can easily repeat as grandkids eventually start to arrive. I did make some modifcations to the design, i.e. the mane, tail and eyes, to mimik a different design that I have seen. Wish I could include a picture of the finisghed product for you to see. I am very happy with how it worked out. Thanks again.

To print plans on 8.5x11 paper. Download plans and save to computer. Open plans with Adobe Reader. Select- print in Adobe Reader. Select- poster. Select- tile scale 100%, overlap .005. Select- only tile large pages. Select orientation - portrait. You will have to cut and tape the plans. This did it for me. Enjoy

To keep the horse in natural wood, first use Danish oil, then finish with a good marine spar varnish.

Great video. Thank you. I am going to modify this somewhat and try making two rocking mules for a fundraising auction. We have a mule farm and I am hoping the mule rocker will be more novel and therefore raise more money. I could not print the plans but will ask my daughter since my challenge is likely generational - - so to speak. Merry Christmas to all!

That is awesome! I'm sure they will be a great item. It's really best to print these templates on a large format printer, if you have access to one. Otherwise you can print them off on regular sized paper then piece them together. But some people have had trouble with that method. Good luck!

What's the purpose of the relief cuts when using the band saw? Why not just cut along the line?

How did you know where to attach the legs on the torso so that the hooves ended up perfectly on the front and back rocker slats? Also, how do the dowels stay in the holes without moving around?

So simple question I hope, since you seem to be really good with your Band Saw. When you're cutting legs out for example I noticed you make 3 or 4 cuts in first, then do the contour, do you have a reason for each of those, like angle of curve, or is that just a habit you picked up to make life easy?

Those are called relief cuts. I have no exact science to when/where to cut them. Simpy, the tighter curve you cut the more relief cuts you will need. It also helps you not get stuck in a long cut. So if you get off track you have a place to start over.

I'm somewhat of a newbie woodworker so I'm curious as to the purpose of the "relief" cuts you make? Thanks and I'm planning on trying this out for a friend who's expecting in November!

They break up a long curve cut in to smaller sections. If you're using a jigsaw they are not as necessary. But with a bandsaw you can get the blade stuck in a long or small radius cut. The relief cuts give you an out, so you don't break your blade. Good luck and have fun!

Not a dumb question. They are scaled in the file so you can print them off on a large format printer at a FedEx or other store. Also you can print them off on regular size paper, but you'll have to tape all the pages together to make the full template. Just make sure when you print it that it's printing at 100% size.

In the video you say the body is made from 2x10. in the plans it says 2x8, also the way you glued the body up in the video is different from the plans? I did what the plans say and that's as far as I've gotten so far. Should I do it like you do in the video or like the plans say?

Make sure when you print it off you print it at 100%. Don't resize to fit a regular 8x11. It'll print off in multi pages and you will have to tape them together.
