DIY Rubbermaid Quail Brooder

Works brilliantly! Once I moved my chicken chicks to the outside brooder, I moved the quail chicks over to the pop up brooder to give them a bit more space. I’m not used to having so many babies at once! The small brooder worked really well for that first week since they were so small, it kept the heat in nicely.

I’m not sure what brand it is, but you can get them just about anywhere.

I did that too but kicked it up a notch.... I used small zip ties to hold the hardware cloth, just drill small holes for the ties. Then i cutcoff the bottom of the container and made a snug wood frame from 1x2 furring strips and attached hardware cloth to that and zipvtied it to the container. I use paper towels on the wire floor for the first week. Lastly i made a 3 sided frame and bought a huge cookie sheet as a poop tray to slide into that frame and cover it with sawdust. When they go outside the poop tray gets emptied and washed, ready for next group. Container is 18x27ish, I've had up to 25 chicks in it for three weeks

Any reason why you couldn't just drill a bunch of air holes in the rubbermaid lid instead??

I was using a heat lamp to keep them warm at the time, the heat needed to be able to go through the lid without melting it, thus the wire instead of just holes. Holes would work really well if using a heat plate however, which is what I now use and much prefer.

Get a 50 gallon tote or larger if possible cuz they get big fast and need a lot of space to run around.

They were only in this set up for a week or two and I moved them to a large pop up brooder ☺️

Make sure the lamp doesn’t get the brooder above 99 degrees
