The final product was outstanding as your attention to detail was evident! 👍 The wife knew you would knock this project out the park without issue! ☝️🍺🍺🍺🍺 Appreciate you taking the time to share this information and process with all of us! Given that the dowels go in at an angle (versus straight in with normal dowel joinery) I wonder if these joints are even stronger since they are crossing so many more wood fibers. Great idea. I think I'll use this for my own dining room table.

came here after the video on dowel/pocket hole trick to see the real thing, fascinating tip! however, i did notice that you didn't use tabletop fasteners that allows for the wood to expand and contract. if you are starting to see crack in your table, you may need to undo the pocket holes for the top and use proper fasteners.
@MakerBeach4 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right. We eat at that table everyday so I keep an eye on it. We're in Florida so our temp and humidity swings aren't that drastic throughout the year but it's definitely something to be aware of. Thanks for commenting and watching!
@rickdunn38834 жыл бұрын
@@MakerBeach You can also re-drill the pocket holes with a larger drill bit such that the screw can move in the apron. I saw that on someone else's video-probably would work. Has anyone tried this? How well does it work?

Thank you! I can't remember but you can use a pocket hole screw or two to hold it in place and once you have a dowel installed you can back out the screw, enlarge the hole and then insert a dowel. I have a follow up video that explains that.

When you screwed on the table top, did you do so to allow for expansion and contraction?
@MakerBeach3 жыл бұрын
Nope! I know I should have. There is not a lot of temperature and humidity change where I live so it's been fine the last few years. I mention that in a follow up video I did on the pocket hole dowel technique.

Great and simple video to enjoy, thanks! Can you tell me about the little sled your router was riding on when you were routing out the edges of the table? I’m new to woodworking and just getting into the tools in terms! Thanks, Adam

It's just a piece of scrap particle board screwed to the base of the router to keep it stable. I don't use the router a lot so I need all the help I can get. It came from a particle board shelf covered in black laminate which makes it slide really easily across the work surface.

...hello :), why would you not just use the pocket screws to attach aprons to legs, not strong enough? ....and so the dowels in this instance are stronger? many thanks in advance
@MakerBeach3 жыл бұрын
I thought dowels would be stronger for the heavy legs on this table.
@ChristopherClaudioSkierka3 жыл бұрын

How is the bleaching finish holding up? Are you getting any yellowing as you close in on a year?
@MakerBeach4 жыл бұрын
It's still looking good! It's actually been about a year and a half because I finished the top before we decided what type of legs and color for the base. It's pine so it's got a few dings from the everyday use but color is still looking good. Have you had bleached wood go yellow with time?

I've seen lots of premade dowels with a ridged surface to facilitate glue spread and adherence. Instead of sanding the homemade dowels for fit why not try using the teeth on the inside of a pair of adjustable pliers to groove the dowel surfaces like premade dowels? Just grip the dowel firmly and scchhhlide the pliers down once or twice.

What’s the Final cost of the table and nice work
@MakerBeach4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ralph, that's a great question. I probably used five or six 2x10x8s which are about $13 in my area. I had to rip a few to avoid defects. The table legs are pretty thick so they were $300 for all four. The router bit was about $80. The bleach is pretty cheap on amazon. So just materials was less than $400. Around $500 if you include the router bit and consumables like glue, bleach and screws.
