You could make the block out of steel now that you know what your break action lock will look like. Thus will make it last that much longer since it takes the brunt of the recoil. You could even go as far as buying some casenite or similar and case hardening the block/breach face, hammer, and trigger. That will make those parts last all the longer so when this derringer is handed down generation after generation, it will still be in proper working order. Good work!
@jimafcarbon44332 жыл бұрын
See, now that's a good idea ! The hammer and trigger on this one are 4130, so they can be heat treated. But making the block out of steel too would add a lot of strength where it matters. I like it!

wow, thank you for the kind words. im pleasantly suprised with the positive attitudes toward my content. Which I don't feel is great, at least my production value. I plan to do some videos on my shop, tools, techniques and a bit of history. Nothing I have is great, but I have a lot of money and time invested in my shop. My latest acquisition about 2 years ago is a Bridgeport as old as I am. It could use some TLC. I've had a chinese mini-mill for about 10 years and a grizzly lathe for about 7 or 8 years. I got my first TIG welder maybe 2 years ago. My dad was a part time gunsmith for 30 years.. For about 10 years now I've been a weekend warrior gunsmith. But I've always been a DIY type and love the problem solving type job shop projects. These little derringers are 95% hand tools. The designs are intended to be simple for the DIY tyoe to complete with basic tools. I'm obviously just starting with the video documentation of this kind of work. I'll take it as far as I can with youtubes limitations. Maybe people will be entertained, maybe we'll learn something. I can only hope to inspire others to take on a project of their own.

Just the lower 3/4 of the chamber. The top 1/4 is the hammer which contains the firing pin. The plans call for 2 pins, not a block. The block is the better way to do it. And the block is where my latch pivots. An even better way would be to have the block cover the whole chamber. A floating firing pin captured in the block.

True. I wouldn't carry one of these anyway, but you could find a balance on the spring tension where it wouldn't be too difficult to open yet would not likely open accidently. Could scallop the side plate and require the button to be recessed before opening. Many ways around it, but as a range toy, it's not a problem. I'd love to see other ideas though.
