DIY Simple Solar Night Lamp / Mini Street Light using TP4056 board

Another version of do it yourself simple solar night lamp or mini streetlight with auto on/off function using TP4056 board as battery protection device for 18650 batteries. Auto on/off function is done by transistor, diode and resistor.
If the LED lights dont last overnight, change the resistor to 4.7k Ohms 1/4W.

I am also trying to build one(have no experience in electronics). I bought 6V 1watt 166mA solar panel, 2200mAh 3.7V 18650 lithium ion battery and a 1 watt led. On searching the web, I found out that TP4056 have an max. input voltage of 5V and connecting a 6V solar panel as input is not good. So, the other board I found was CN3065. What other components do I need to build the same setup with the components I already have ?

Does the value of the resistor depend on the current drawn by the connected load? Does the life of the battery depend on the resistance? What is the maximum current drawn by the load in this circuit?

I built this circuit but unless the battery is close to fully charged the led isn't very bright because the transistor drops too much voltage.

Hello Edmund. Which element is responsible for switching on the led after dark? 2.2K resistor? My lamp lights up too early. Lights up when it's not quite dark yet.

The voltage from the solar panel is what shuts off the LED's. You can try adjusting the value of the resistor to get the level you like.

Nice and simple, which is just what off-grid people need. Could you list the voltage and current of the LEDs you used? We have 3.2V 350mA LEDs available here.

The voltage is inherently set by the color of the LED. Blue and white LED's have a nominal voltage of around 3.6V.

Hi, can you explain a little more about the auto on/off function and how this works? Does the 9013 effectively kick in when there is 3V supplied to the base? Is that not a little too early to kick in, e.g. it's not that dark yet?

Mike Bartlett transistor acts as trigger in the absence and presence of voltage in the solar panel. When the panel has enough voltage to forwadd bias the diode, the base emitter of trasistor is reversed biased, so emitter-collector of. transistor is cutoff. When solar panel has no voltage, it will act as high resistance resistor. Base to emitter current flows thru solar panel internal resistance, thus switching on the emitter to collector junction and led will turn on. That is the principle.

Could you also explain why there's not resistor on the LEDS? In your other video with the 8205 modification you have a resister in front of the LEDS. Thanks.

Mike Bartlett because the transistor is acting as current source limiter controlled by a bias resistor in a form of the solar panel. Not unlike the previous circuit, the built mosfet on the TP4056 board is acting just on/off switch that those leds require current limiter in a form of resistor in series.

The TP4056-board he uses has the DW01 controller that stops over-charge and over-discharge.

It is warm only during charging. That is normal. It may be hot if your batt is bad.

I just tried. Seems like the panel needs to generate more than 3 volts to run the whole circuit but when not enough sunlight my panel just generates about 1.5 to 2 volts and that causes the LEDs to be on draining the battery no matter what. Thanks for your answer.
