Yeah, i prefer to just start and figure it out along the way. It leads to more "fails," but coming up with solutions on the spot is fun for me.

Be careful using pocket holes in this manner. It’s a fine method of joinery for connections that are not going to be under a lot of stress, such as cabinet, carcasses, and drawers, but not so much for this application. After you drill, the pocket holes, there’s not a ton of material left to prevent that screw from pulling out. Don’t load that thing up too much, my woodworking friend. Source: civil engineer who has done some timber design back in the day.

What would recommend for this sort of connection (without using separate brackets)? Just drill into the end grain?

Yes I’m also curious what you would recommend as a superior joint? I’m guessing half lap?

Exactly. I'm struggling to see how you'd avoid having a "weak joint" at least somewhere in such a project...@@asianboy08

@@asianboy08 i would say just build it like a deck use corner brackets and SDS screws to attach the 2x4s to the ceiling joists then use joist hanger on the cross members also with SDS screws or sub out the SDS screws for nails the SDS screws are rated for holding up structures. they're meant to not snap like regular screws

Fantastic. I love that you had this problem. I had exactly the same problem :-) I ended up sliding the entire support structure a little closer to the front of the garage.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I have been contemplating do the same in my garage to store extra wood (plywood, 2x4, etc) and I have been toying with the idea of using black pipe instead of wood for strength. Any thoughts?

Great video, this is exactly what I needed. I’m going to attempt the same build. What kind of screws did you use to attach your anchor two-by-fours to the ceiling? They look pretty skinny, would it be best to use some thicker lag bolts?

Have you thought of a possibility that this wood could slide off and fall on someone's head giving time? Maybe you should tie it down? I am not an expert just an observer because I am trying to figure out also how to store my plywood because it is taking too much space in my garage. Thanks for great info.
