DIY Smoke Extractor! Simple Homemade "5-layer" Water-Based mini air cleaner. this purifying air filter uses water to clean the air of smoke, fumes or odor from cigarettes to solder fumes! works by pulling air thru several layers of loose knit absorbent "water saturated" pad (evap. pad). clean air is then sent back into the room via a small dc fan. this "water based" design removes nearly all odor from cigs to solder fumes! to make: only 3 items are needed: a plastic container, a small 12VDC fan and a few scraps of evap. cooling pad. that's it. can be run on battery, solar panel or wall current. video shows tests using incense (sticks and cones) along with solder and soldering iron. works great!. note: the pads will absorb nearly all the smoke, fumes and odors along with all the associated "particulates" - so they need regular cleaning. to do that just hand wash them in hot soapy water and rinse them out and you're good to go.

I am a cigar smoker and have been looking for a resonable home project so that Ican have a smoke while watching a hockey game or while i die playing Battlefield V and this looks like the trick. I'm going to go a little bigger as there occasionally is a buddy or two over. Excited to try this out. Thanks.

One thing you can do to make sure no smoke or fumes come out is put a dry charcoal filter on the top right under the fan over another dry filter like you have in the video, also drilling holes in the lower sides of the bucket all around might be better than cutting that big hole in just one side and if it leaks water you can just put it a big low profile plastic pan, oil pan at Dollar Tree for $1.00 Dollar will do it if it did leak water. Thanks for the idea, this could be done on a much bigger scale like with a 5 gallon bucket I imagine. You can't wet the charcoal filters though like I said because they become worthless, maybe sprinkle some baking soda on the top of one of those blue filters to catch the odors, but not too much, baking soda absorbs odor pretty good. I might try this but with a bigger fan on top and with a 5 gallon bucket instead. Great idea, keep it up.

I use aquarium charcoal in my home made air filters. Apparently it filters water while getting wet. I never understood why people think water destroys activated charcoal. I think they misunderstood the warnings not to allow charcoal infused fabric or paper filters to get wet with not allowing the charcoal itself to get wet. I would definitely put a dry layer in between these pads and any activated charcoal, for sure. But I don't think the moisture itself would cause a problem other than perhaps requiring replacement somewhat sooner than if you kept it 100% dry.

This is a great idea, - I will defo try this. I wonder if there is also a way to draw the smoke and pump it into a water tank, like a bubble tank, so that no filters are needed. You'd just need to empty the water periodically. My use case is a way to burn wood inside the house and exhaust the fumes without my neighbors getting annoyed at the smell.

Ok. It removes visible smoke, but what I'm interested in is how well it removes toxic particulates from cigarette smoke.

Grab an old portable A/c someone has thrown away and get the motors and reuse them to make a larger device. You could even design a evaporative cooler sucking air in through evap mat the cooled air forced through copper funnels cooling the air even more has it passed through another evap mat.

hi. i don't have any way to prove that it's working (but it is). these things really do pull most of the smoke out of the air. once i started the unit i couldn't smell the smoke anymore. after a while you can check the pads and tell by the look and smell of them that it is absorbing the smoke. i chose this design because i had read that water absorbs smoke very well. and i knew these types of pads are known to act like an air filter when they are wet. all you have to do is wash the pads every so often with soap and water to clean the pads
