I just made one like yours and no pump needed, I made for my pallet grill. Cost me around $16

The cold smoker I've just finished looks quite different to yours because I had different stuff lying around. However, it is completely the child of your youtube clip. Very many thanks for the inspiration!

I made one of these from you video, I drilled hole on both sides instead of the bottom. As for the air I tried an air pump from an aquarium but didn't seem to have enough air pressure then I tried a compressor and that was ok but it never shut off. I finally found a solution that worked for me, believe it or not I am using an old CPAP machine for the air, its a real workhorse and the output is adjustable. I am using the same size can you are and I am using Applewood pellets which last about an hour I may increase the can size to a gallon.

It's been 4 years . . . . can't wait for Part 2 ! A 1/4" air hose quick connect fitting is a lot easier to assemble into the air injection rod for those who do not want to solder or brass braze as you have done. That will make it simple to connect and remove your air compressor. Go from the copper tubing to a 1/4" female pipe fitting, then simply screw-in the quick connect fitting.

Min air pump for smoke generator is around 8 liters / min or 126 gal / hr. My air for the smoker worked at 2 lbs/ inch. Topfin 1000 at PetSmart is appox. 1.0 liter / min. Hope this helps.

Any inflator for a mattress or balloons will work also. While still a bit noisy they're a lot quieter than a full fledged compressor. The automotive/tire compressors are very loud because they pump for high PSI. I used a portable mattress inflator and a vintage Royal Oak Lighter Fluid can for mine. The old lighter fluid lid can just be pulled off with some pliers, but there is a lip for it to snap into. Take a Dremel disc and hold it perpendicular to grind it off. The steel is too thin to cause issues. The remaining 1"-ish hole can hold a pipe thread itself perfectly. There is no need to solder smooth pipes unless they're loose. Their default tight fit is good enough and makes cleaning easier.

Good info. Just finished my unit and it works fairly well with pellets. I got a Topfin 1000 iar pump and it would not work. I had to hook it up to my compressor and cut the air to about 4 or 5 then it worked. How big a fish tank air blower does it take?....would like one that will work with my router control from harbor freight. Burned out the paint can with a propane torch and had to reinforce the bottom of the can with a metal plate. I plan to cold smoke salmon overnight when it get a little cooler. I am going to hook the unit up to my Weber 22 inch kettle with a 1/2 in id hose. Close and tape the bottom airholes with silver dryer tape and see if that works. I am sure that it will. Any advise on this would be welcome.

I used a 3/4" NPT to 1/2" copper tube adapter. Slid the 1/2" copper tube through the fitting, then a 1/2" copper to 3/8" NPT which screws into a ball valve for air flow control. I used the 10" nipple like he did an found optimum venturi at 11 3/4" from the tip, or about an inch before the T fitting center.

Brilliant idea.. Have you tried to run it with the pipes on the bottom (upside down compared to this orientation)? It's the main difference between Bella Smokin It and the Big Daddy smoker. A KZbinr showed the Bella Smokin it to be more precise.

I built this also using a gallon can instead. I used black pipe just like you did. I just used it for the first time and noticed a black tar like substance dripping from the pipe into my smoke box. The tar like goo is on the lid of the can just like yours. Is this toxic material from the black pipe or is it just the product of smoking?
@cheftut1
@cheftut1 5 жыл бұрын
The Tar is a normal product. Generally, there is a little warmth to the smoke(Not Hot) but if you are doing it outside on a cold day, the length of your inlet pipe to your box with dictate the coldness (for lack of a better word) of your smoke. I have my own homemade smoke generator made from a section of 4 inch Gas pipe. I used a brass inlet pipe with copper fittings.....No problem, but it produces the same tar which is a product of the condensation coming from the hot smoke mixing with the cold air I am assuming. My only issue has been that I am using an aquarium pump which I feel is not producing enough vacuum because of lack of airflow. It does well for a couple of hours then burns out quickly. I am installing a regulator inline and valve from my air compressor today. should do great.

I built one with a gallon can. It worked OK. Full of soaked apple chips I had to use a propane torch underneath to keep them burning. He used dry chips so once they start, they keep burning. A gallon of soaked chips lasted about 3hrs. Smoking fish takes 12 hrs. so I'm building a bigger one out of an old helium tank.
