DIY Snowshoe Test (Tac9er GAW Announcement)

heading to the mountains with me. we're going to test out some homemade snowshoes. let's see just what kind of flotation and traction these get. hang on till the end and find out who won the giveaway for the Tac9er collapsible e-tool shovel.

We're having some sunny days down here in the valley. but still getting hit with some pretty hard storms and temperatures aren't up very high yet. In fact it's supposed to storm the next two days. the shoes worked pretty good but I've actually made a couple of improvements. Might go try them tomorrow in the storm LOL. Have a great week buddy.

@@Shastavalleyoutdoorsman Crazy how the weather does different things at different elevations there! When we drove through Colorado back in 2001 it was in the 60's in the valley, got up to nearly 12k feet and upper 20's with a few inches of snow on the ground! Blew my mind as I have never witnessed it before.

Oh definitely man. Pretty much anything above 8000 ft can see a possibility of snow year round. I've been snowed on in July at 7,000 ft. It never gets super hot high in the mountains. One of the reasons I work around up there in the summer LOL.

@@Shastavalleyoutdoorsman I'll trade ya lol, it gets so hot and humid here man. I have seen the heat index reach 125 degrees in the summer. So crazy but if you want to see snow I guess head up into higher terrain lol. Speaking of snow and cold, I really need to get some good goretex mittens! Thats what I had problems with all winter, my head and hands got so bitterly cold. Probly getting older and less circulation to the digits ya know, but stuff goes on sale dirt cheap in the summer!! I was looking at Dakine titans, usually like 150 bucks but on sale about 40 lol. Goretex and come with liners, people swear on em.

I'm terrible about not wearing gloves. I just finally bought a decent pair. like you said as you get older your hands start to hurt some. never broken anything but fingers and toes will possibly a shin bone lol. my hands are really starting to feel the cold.

Yes sir that's exactly it. First go round they were too slick and too wide. These I shaped more like a regular Snowshoe and added the traction devices. which is a couple of pieces of leftover 3/4 inch pex lol. I used my coping saw to kind of make teeth in them. I kind of angled them so that they slide forward over the snow and bite as I slide back. The main body itself is made of some kind of poly material that they make greenhouses with. Looks like little plastic square tubes stacked on top of each other. It's really strong and seems to do all right with the cold.

Thanks man. I originally planned to use stationary bindings and kind of use them like a cross between snowshoes and Cross country skis. But they have become full on snowshoes. They work even better with a toe box and a ratcheting style binding. Have a great week bud.

Oh yeah man some high mountain roads will have four or five feet on them. There are actually major roads that go through mountain passes that get closed for the winter. Where I'm at there is probably at least 5,000 ft. Thanks for watching buddy.

I get out I just don't get as far out LOL. but I just acquired some old beater snowmobiles I'm going to be working on this summer! There are a lot of lakes you would have all to yourself if you were to snowmobile in to ice fish here.
