Watch part one here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWfLhplrgcSGmdk
The second part is all about software and a real use case of this do it yourself (DIY) standalone autoguider system running EKOS and PHD2 on Ubuntu.
We'll go over a few installation steps, such as how to install PHD2 and EKOS on Ubuntu, enable SSH, set up the on screen keyboard. Then, we'll dive into a real world use case under clear skies, imaging Andromeda and Orion with an unmodded DSLM.
The commands mentioned in the video for you to copy & paste:
sudo apt-get update
Setting up SSH:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install openssh-server
sudo systemctl status ssh
sudo ufw allow ssh
Installing KStars: indilib.org/get-indi/download-ubuntu.html
Installing PHD2:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pch/phd2
sudo apt-get install phd2

Nice video. It got very cold during your session. This is where I think the Pi's are best suited for working in the harsh environment. Very cheap and easy to replace. You should try the Object and Sequence scheduler, you can image more targets in one or more nights. I have done it before but I need to update the artificial horizon limits for my back yard since I have trees that block out the sky. This help the scheduler wait for when objects are in view of the telescope. There is even a Mosaic planner too. 😀

Thats true, the hardware and even the touch controls worked pretty well during these extremes. Unfortunately my Fuji and Sony cameras cant really be controlled remotely on the Pi (Fuji not supported, Sony a bit buggy), thats why I'm mainly using it for autoguiding/platesolving with guidecam. For my big rig with the ASI183 I have a NINA setup. The artificial horizon limit sounds pretty useful, though! Clear skies ✨

Really nice job. I'm just a newbie in this hobby and also i own a small portable rig. I don't even have an autoguide setup right now but i plan to get one in the near future. I see you used a Fuji camera and that's the part where my question comes in. I also have a Fuji camera (X-T10) wich is not supported by libgphoto. As i searched the list of supported cameras your model is LiveView only. So are you able to do dithering with this setup? Some tip would be appreciated. :) I really want to automate my rig in the future, and my experience with this little Fuji camera is very pleasing so far. I wish to stick with it for now or even upgrade to an X-T2 or X-T3 if necessary. If all else fails i'll buy a ZWO cooled camera, but again i love this little fellow and also the Fuji system. Also i mainly use Ubuntu and open source software like Gimp and Siril for my processing. Thank you for this video!

Hello Adrián, thanks for the nice comment! So for Fuji, things were a bit tricky. I did try to get my Fuji and Sony camera to work with kStars for remote control but I encountered some problems. With the X-S10 remote control was even trickier (even on windows) and I did not get it to work on a Linux system/in Kstars. So no dithering and platesolving with the main camera unfortunately. How I use this setup is mainly as a standalone autoguider connected to the mount and control the camera with a remote shutter. Fortunately the guiding cam can also be used for platesolving. As I modded my Sony Alpha 7iii to be more sensitive to h-alpha two months ago, I moved completely to Sony, but even there it is tricky in KStars, the drivers/connection are not really stable (or I dont understand it completely^^). For full automation I use an ASI183MC Pro and this small autoguider is mainly used for a "semi automatic" lightweight setup in combination with my Sony (and Fuji before I switched). If I remember correctly the two models you mentioned have better support on Linux than my X-S10; I also remember a guide with the correct camera configuration about this exact topic somewhere on the internet...but after a quick search I did not find it.. :/ Nevertheless I hope you enjoy this hobby, the learning curves are sometimes challenging but rewarding at the same time! :) Clear skies!

@@ChrizzlyUniverse Thank your for the answer! My wireless remote release just arrived this week and it works really well... Now my last idea to automate this system is to set the intervallometer to run the Fuji and if i manage to find a solution to somehow find a script or anything to time the dithers in whatever guiding software out there, then it's the way to go. I've found a dither timer app for Phd2 recently, but unfortunately the source code is nowhere to be found and it's an exe file. I tried to run it with Wine but it's not working as intended... I tried to virtualbox a win10 inside Ubuntu but my old macbook is too weak for this kind of fun. Just freezes out all the time. I guess if nothing works and i'll finally have the guiding system i just run the guiding and do manual dithering and control the camera with the intervallometer from inside... Just to spend some time with family and so on... and eventually i surprise myself with a dedicated cooled camera. But Fuji will stay with me for landscape astro for sure... Have a nice day and have fun! ;)

Hi.. I have a basic question... I already have an Astroberry setup, and I am trying to understand if we can use Astroberry as a standalone system, after installing a touchscreen... If that is possible, what is the advantage of using Ubuntu over Astroberry?

Hey there, Astroberry is running with Raspbian and that should be fine, too. At that time I wanted to experiment with Ubuntu and I knew that Ubuntu had native support for the touch screen so I went with it. No further reasons :) Cheers and CS!
