Hi, thank you for your video, everything make sense apart from when you mention the jumper piece. You say it needs to be fitted somewhere somehow on the solanoid....could clarify that point for me...I am not sure what to do with that jumper piece...

If this is for heat soaked solenoid, how does it work if you still go through the old one that's still on the starter and hot as hell , thanks

Thanks for the video! My solenoid on my sbc went out today. Got a fresh rebuilt engine and had extra starts on tuning and such. But in theory, isn't the one on the starter going to do the same thing as mine did fail because of heat or overstarting? Just curious what you think of that? Like is the failure rate less addingn a external solenoid?

Thanks for the video man. I have a question. I have a total of 4 wires. I see the alternator and battery positive on the big lug, I have a smaller black wire I believe is the “S” wire, then I have another small black wire labeled “R”. I heard you mention the first two lugs but I did not hear you mention the “R” lug. My question is where does that wire land at on the new solenoid and what does it do and stand for? Thank you!

I know this is an older video, but I'm hoping Klowny or anyone can help. My Camaro has a remote solenoid on the inner fender. However, the positive cable from the battery goes to the other side (right side) (closest to the I terminal) and the other cable from the solenoid to the starter is on the left side (closest to the S) does this make a difference? It starts up, but want to ensure it's wired correctly. Thank you.

Does the cold post only get power when the keys is engaged ? Once the key flips back to the run position the power stops and stops the starter from spinning correct ? Is there a post I can use on this to give power to my amp only when the key is in the on position ?

I have a 65 El Camino with a 350 Chevy engine I have the problem of starting when it's hot so I bought an external 1990 Ford F150 solenoid very similar to the one that you show in video. Do you remove the red battery cable to it ? It seems like the solenoid that is on the starter is also running the external solenoid????

Helped a lot, thanks. One question, I have a mystery wire. Its 1979 mustang cobra v8, and I have a wire that i dont know where it goes. The car has an aftermarket security system in it, would it be possible that a wire frome that would go to the solenoid? It also has an engine kill switch hidden that prevents spark, but i tested that and I dont think the wire is from that because it still worked when the wire wasnt connected. Any clues?

Alright so I'm redoing the old brittle wiring on my 74 Dart and I'm still fairly new to the engine electronics/ignition systems so bear with me here. I've heard you refer to the solenoid as a relay a couple of times. Is a solenoid the same thing as a relay? Would that be why my starter doesn't have a solenoid on it but a 10gauge wire running to a relay mounted on the inner fender well instead? The motor is burnt up so If I replaced the starter with one that has a solenoid mounted on it like that really chromy looking starter in your video could I toss the old relay and just run the ignition switch wire strait off the S terminal on the solenoid. The previous owners left the car's wiring a complete CF so i'm trying to reduce the amount of wires I have running around and remote mounted relays way out in left field acting as eye soars and what not. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to organization and stuff lol.

let me try to make simple what you have is red wire from battery to big lug on solenoid the other big lug conns to starter now the little red wire comes from key switch to small bolt on solenoid other small bolt on solenoid gos to ground ----so what happens when you turn key to start this operates a magnet in solenoid which shorts out 2 big lugs on solenoid to spin stater this standard solelnoid operation no matter what its on your truck or your lawn more generly speaking so if you turn key nothing happens no click nothing take a jumper wire 14 ga ok short between big lug on solenoid red wire(battery) to small red wire on solenoid this should spin starter this tells you are not getting voltage from switch key operated their is a fuse from little red wire on solenoid to key switch there is a seperate wire from battery to key switch key just connects these two togeatherin side switch-if still no go check seat switch brake pedal switch pto MOWER BLADE not operated maby a rev switch this basic wiring on most mowers unless you are trained vometers you are spining your wheels using one i am 88 i built my first meter 1965 analog with vacume tubes today meters are digital no needle just digits

Klowny1969, Great video! Real easy to follow. The best part is that I won't have to crawl under my truck to see if there is a loose connection to the solenoid. I know there is one cable from the FORD solenoid that still has to be run to the starter, but I don't think I have ever seen these nuts and lock washers come loose. I have seen smaller wire to "S" or "I" terminal crack and or loosen because everyone is afraid to tighten them too much. I already rewired my Blazer with this setup. I added a Anderson Powepole connector (use one side only) on the cable that goes to the starter from the FORD solenoid. I put it nearer to the new solenoid. I hook it up nice and tight to the starter while the starter is out of the car, so I can really get it snug. The added benefit is that I don't have to work so hard to get the damned wire connected to the starter in a cramped and confined space. I just have to mount the support brace and the two mounting screws. This setup has solved a lot of issues, where I used to curse having to troubleshoot GM starter no-start situations in the past. Easy and highly recommended. Big thank you.

If you bypass the starter solenoid and use the good old ford solenoid hook it the way you said but the wire running to the starter should just hook to the thick post going straight in the starter because you're bypassing the starter solenoid because I guess because it was bad, so why still run through the bad starter noid. Just saying,

Ok...you have a heat soak issue with your GM starter. Solenoid is on the starter motor housing. If you wire the Ford remote solenoid the way he said, including the jumper, you effectively bypass the original solenoid. Look at the wiring. It’ll make sense to you. It’s a common hot rod method.

Klowny - Thanks for taking the time to post this video. I installed this kit today on a C6 Corvette. Worked for the first two starts, then the starter stayed on (engaged and cranking) for a few extra seconds on 3rd start. Then on the 4th start, it stayed on and wouldn't tun off until I disconnected the battery. Car was not hot (only run for a few seconds between these starts), battery had been on a charger all night, solenoid was new (same kit as you show in the video) and I wired the way you have here (same as instructions in kit). Any thoughts on what caused the starter to stay on? Thanks, man.

I'm looking into best way to do this I hear some people hook this up improperly and it ghosts solenoid stays on because they have there s terminal linked to the solenoid terminal on the starter, and holds power even after let off cranking. Your way seams way better. But I have a question how dose your starter know when to crank will it only get power when you turn the key all the way? I must be thinking wrong because I thought that was solenoid pops out a when the key is turned acc (not all the way) just before you turn to crank. Or is it solenoid pops out when you start cranking?

I got mine all installed but all I had was some 10 ga. wire to run from the remote solenoid to the starter. It isn't sending enough power down to the starter to turn over the engine. What gauge wire do you recommend? I tested the solenoid without the wire from the solenoid down to the starter and I get over 12 volts but with the 10 gauge wire down to the starter I only get about 8 volts.

thanks my friend, but i have to ask... why do you have to jump the S terminal in the starter with the fat bolt?? if the S terminal goes to the S terminal in the starter Selenoid?

So does the jumper go to the "S" post or the "R" post on the starter?

I have a 73 Mach 1 and there's a 4th wire coming from the ignition coil, if I put it with the key wire the coil begins to heat up. What should I do?

I just got mine today and the instructions say to put the battery and everything on the opposite side than what you are showing. Do they work either way?

AMC used that same solenoid. My '69 AMX has one just like that. The I terminal is for the ballast resistor bypass. During cranking, the coil gets a full 12 volts from the I terminal.

Where do you buy that little metal jumper? I used to use a piece of tin can lid cut with tin snips to make mine from scratch but the one you got looks a lot nicer than what I've always used.
