Main monitors in a studio help the engineer judge the low end in the initial recording process. In one studio I worked in, the two channel custom monitor system cost $40,000 20 years ago... and they were the BEST I've EVER heard. Love your videos and am glad to see this series of videos. I'm a former audio engineering tech who spent years in the studio, so watching your vids is fun. Make me miss a soldering iron and designing and building things.

Really enjoying this project, but let me take a sec to plant an idea for the next build -- a high output "party speaker". I imagine something akin to a pro audio monitor with less consideration for stereo separation and more for loud and clear sound with full range punch. Something that could be pole mounted and/or on wheels. Pro audio gear gets very loud using high efficiency drivers (e.g., compression drivers) but you don't normally see sub-base included in the same package, much less in a reasonable portable size --- the classic "100 lbs of stuff in a 10 lb bag" scenario. Would love to see how you'd tackle that challenge. Thx!

I like to see some old school gorilla coffins. Fresh out of High School I had a set of Cerwin Vega VS-150's powered by an Adcom GFA-555 amp, Adcom GTP-450 preamp/tuner and a late 90's Yamaha 5 disc changer (can't remember the model number). They definitely weren't the most revealing speakers on the market but when well feed they f'n rocked the house!

I'd like to see a large, full-range, active-crossover project with at least 3 drivers per side with the flat frequency response being prioritized over aesthetics or simplicity or low budget. So... moderate-priced drivers, moderate construction techniques, careful measurement and active crossover implementation and awesome performance. Not cheap, not easy, not fantastically gorgeous... Form to follow Function. Hey! You told us to comment!

some theory on ideal sound would be a good vid topic, as a "flat" speaker is not necessarily ideal. typically a curve is more enjoyable and realistic sounding. Also Room EQ Wizard would make a great topic to cover as well
@darine.3145

Very practical approach -- like your presentation (I used to design crossovers in a previous life for a high end speaker firm). Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but a resistor in series with the woofer is not a good idea...it hurts damping factor, creates power handling issues, hurts overall efficiency, etc. It will make bass flabby. Better to choose a more efficient midrange driver to match the woofer (use a midrange that is not designed as a woofer). I used to do this "noodling" by hand, ear, and manual measurement -- software certainly makes this easier!
@westelaudio943
@westelaudio943 2 жыл бұрын
Very good point. It will drive up the Qts of the woofer. This could also be an advantage in some (rare) cases. However... overheating of the resistor is also a concern - it's good practice not to do it.

My favourite colour, for a while at least is that colour where you take a fluorescent orange piece of clothing and wear it and wash it for 10 years until it's all dulled and washed out. Love that. As for DIY speaker building. I find it so bewildering, that I can't even justify getting started. I don't have any software. But I do have a master's in mechanical engineering and I do carpentry for my job, so it shouldn't be too hard, but I'm like anxious to even attempt it. Maybe I just need a kick up the butt...

Hey Kirby! I saw that the crossover sound signature is very flat, i recommend you to use a L-PAD filter in your tweeter to add some progressiveness to the higher frequencies and make them sound softer and more detailed. If you only put a resistor in series to the tweeter the sound can be a bit harsh from 2000 to 9000 hz, and less fun to listen. Love your videos, you are a great contribution to audio community.

Hey there, one thing I would like to see that I never see on your channel or any others like yours is a closed/sealed box design. Everybody defaults to a port. Well... a port kinda sucks in many ways. A sealed box tightens up that upper bass that is the bane of every recording engineer, I know I are one, for 40 years LOL. The sealed box is the secret behind the Yamaha NS-10. Not the urban myth that "If I can make it sound good on this piece of crap it will sound good anywhere" It's how good it is in the upper bass/lower mids. Now I'm not talking about small or computer/bluetoothy stuff where people are looking for warmth, I mean real speakers that someone can get some work done like you are working on in this video. I Love the work you do, and how much effort you put into it. THANK YOU!!! We need more of you's. P.S. a speaker designed for a recording environment Needs/or Must have a front port. Most current models with rear ports to make the box smaller require user-selectable DSP to deal with rear wall buildup.

They recommend applying their clear top coat for finishing. I used this paint on the Parts Express "Blast Box 200 Portable Bluetooth Speaker" . I posted (4) pictures under the reviews; it the one that looks like a Jet Airplane ; Post date December 3, 2019. Thanks for all of the KZbin videos; your the one that inspired me to do "DIY speaker". Hey Kirby! You can use keyboard shortcuts (S, O & I) to open short or invert components in Vituix (you might have to use ctrl too but I forget). You can also ctrl+click to move your reference line in the frequency response window :) Edit: I think there are three buttons along the top edge of the component data window - the one underneath the schematic view, which you can use to short, invert or open, too.

Hey Kirby, I noted that you made the crossover to be flat on the frequency response curve, but the problem is that you didn't consider the bafle diffraction, this will make your speaker bass shy.
@KirbyMeetsAudio
@KirbyMeetsAudio 4 жыл бұрын
True! But this is just a preliminary crossover design for a start reference and to talk about crossover design in this series. Once the enclosure is built I’ll take my own measurements and continue the crossover design. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 🙏
@grahamsquared
@grahamsquared 4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate this is a mock-up but in Vituix you can load the FRDs you used in to the baffle diffraction tool to create real-world simulations of the response. This will give you a much better approximation of crossover design rather than assuming the drivers will be mounted on an IEC baffle.

can you show how to build a simple speaker with only a fullrange (for simplicity) ? Im following your videos since the beginning and i always feel like you leave out some stuff. Please show why you select the specific driver, simulate the box youll put it in, take measurements and derive a crossover from them. I feel like im searching for puzzle pieces in all of the videos and there are still some pieces missing. From your video series on how to design a speaker i get the impression that you only simulate a crossover in x-sim and you only simulate the baffle diffraction and just build your speaker from the simulation. Keep up the good work dude! Youre one of the reasons im getting deeper into the topic :)

I’m always riding a line of giving as much info as I can in a simple way to understand for beginners, but maybe I should do an advanced design build series? Good to see you active and making more viedos. I would like to see you compare this design of a 3 way studio monitor with a similar design you build for HiFi/ home audio. Then you can tell us the diferences on itself and give us a sound demo of both in equally settings. Why do you want to use a passive crossover instead of a dsp ? When you use it next to a computer it would be easy to adjust and you can get some for a very low price like the SURE or Wondom dsp. I hope your next video will clearify how you mess with that phase produced by all components. If you want an Idea for a good project in the future: I would like to see an expandable HiFi speaker design. Like a really good bookshelf speaker (Coax, 2Way...) that can be expanded with low frequency drivers to match everyones space at home and gives the chance to "grow" if room and buget are given. For the beginning, there can be a small bookshelf speaker. Then you could add a low freq driver but keep it small enough to place it on stands or for a wallmount. The next step could be a floorstand loudspeaker with two or three of these low freq drivers and then for the last step a subwoofer that match the Stereo system. With this setup you can get a woundful stereo system over time and you can use the small ones for a home cinema in 5.1 and above Maybe this time with dsp and any kind of integrated amplifiers..

Id love to see a dedicated Monitor speaker too. Maybe even No budget build. Favourite wood, : Really, anything naturally redish. This year is off to a great start, i cant wait to see the surround sound build too. Can i ask though that you include the issue of not needing a seperate sub. love this series, cant wait to see the build , i love watching you build.

I would add on crossover design is the program is just the beginning, then the physical testing, then the ear is the final filter. The ear is not flat. Different parts with the same value don't sound the same. That is how it get beyond the 80% in the crossover. Also if you have an impedance meter you can buy Larger value inductor and unwind it to make an exact lesser value. You will find Inductors, Capacitors, and resistors all have wide specs. Different placements in the crossover are more critical to how much variation is an issue. Shit! there I talked it!-)

I’m also very interested in dedicated mixing monitors. Especially if we could do 3-way with a reasonable price. And just a shot in the dark, but a really cool feature would be a switch that turns off the tweeter and woofer, to simulate the aura tone style monitor.

NP. I’ve always loved to diy. For some reason never considered doing monitors. That has changed. I’ve been looking at quite a few different drivers. I have more ideas than time or money. Haha. Guess I’ll just have to start with these and go from there. :)

Loving the series so far! I'd like to add a second voice to some comments I already saw: you will need to do some baffle step compensation in order to keep that flat frequency response. Also, I'd love to see a big full-range tower speaker build one day!!

Yep! The resistor on the woofer makes it really easy to adjust for baffle step by ear. But the plan for this build to adjust the crossover based on my own measurements after the enclosure is built. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙏

Hey kirby, as you mentioned your previous video did better than other videos I'd just like to say most people come here for your builds, I'm interested in the build process etc but not on reviewing mass manufactured speakers like the sonos etc..... Built not bought is best in my opinion, so from me to you keep up the great work, keep building great stuff and possibly think of having another channel for reviews etc as I thought you were heading in a different direction with the channel so I turned notifications off as it wasn't what I'd subscribed for. Thank you for your time and keep up the great work 😉

Thanks for your input! Yeah, reviews didn’t quite hit like I’d like. Thought with my experience I might have a different perspective, but I agree with you. How about diy audio component reviews like divers and measuring equipment? Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

@@KirbyMeetsAudio I think maybe review the drivers and metering equipment a week after using them for a build, see if you get the same amount of views or around the same ball park, if not then it's purely builds that people want to see, but you could always do a mini review within the build video, hope that makes sense, I find your build videos very therapeutic and like to sit down after a day of work and enjoy your creativity and others of course. Thank you for reading and replying & I hope you're builds continue to inspire..... Can't wait to see the monitors built as I might have a go at some time.

Talk about overheating resistors. Resistor on the woofer circuit is, maybe, 20w, and if you want to drive that woofer at higher levels, that resistor is going to melt. RMS power of the speaker may be 20w..

Okay, so i have pretty nice 5-inch KRKs, how can i put them on the same signal as a pair of big hifi speakers as the low end only like 50hz down maybe. . ? Rackmount crossover comes to mind but are there home theater ones or car audio ones or passive ones? PLEASE help me out here...

The use of resistors for woofer and tweeter to achieve a balance with a less sensitive midrange causes me to pause and wonder if maybe a better midrange choice of a higher sensitivity would be indicated eliminating the need for added resistance in the crossover. Simpler usually is better (not always) and reducing the need for “extra” components COULD be a better means of accomplishing design parameters with a slightly higher efficiency. Or, am I way “off” in this design logic?

Mid Field or mastering monitors would be my name for the bigger set. It feels like your dumbing it down too much. Maybe that's appropriate but Idk. Daytons are good. A 4th order for the tweeter would have been a better choice IMHO. 12db sloped isn't steep enough. But the rest would be fine wherever. Looks like the mid could have gotten the same hi pass as the tweeter but 6db just to flatten then another as a cutoff. Not sure what would get that done. Looks like a fun program. By the end of the video I see most of the comments I left I want to edit but it shows my thought process. Nice results so far.

In Vid 1 you mentioned a component as being 4 Ohm but didn''t mention the other two. Do they all require the same Ohm value? If not, what is the reason or concept behind using varied Ohm ratings.'' Thanks' TDH PS..Your delivery of the needed info is very good and content is clear to my newby ear. Again Thanxs T
