I have a treadle also. I bought abut 6 years ago in memory of my mother who taught me to sew first on an old treadle. Later her electric Singer only had straight stitch too. We all learned to compensate for not having zig zag. You can encase raw edges of seams in old lingerie material or light tulle or do a flat feld seam. I still rarely use zig zag. A method called Stretch and Sew came out but I figured it out myself. I loosen the top tension a bit and very lightly by stretching material against itself, not against the presser foot, holding back and front, you barely stretch the material. I cut a lot of tops in half at waist or empire line. Im a bit short and old. I often sew back with an elastic casing. Which also helps stitches not break. You allow for fit a bit bigger. Like your dress isnt tight. I also sometimes fold both seams up to the top and top stitch then trim. Gives a little extra support to a lighter knit. I was looking for videos to use several tshirts together! Good tutorial!

One of the first things that I made was a dog coat as well, it was made out of polar fleece, so I didn't even have to hem the fabric.
