I did my closet like this and just added crown moulding on top, bottom and along the edges for a built in look. And for my long hanging items I used a shelf in between two bookcases with a rod and it works great. It probably cost me around $300 for everything and it looks very expensive but it's not. Beats ikea or any custom closet company. I mounted my bookcases to the wall though for extra support.

Show off rack, dust catcher... BUT I LOVE IT!!! I always love to display my fav things and my bf always called them dust catchers. lol Oh well, he was right! But it sure is pretty! (And it's not like I never dusted!!! ) lol Thanks for the instructions. Love the way it all turned out. Oh yea...PS .. I cut a piece of cardboard to fit, then covered that securely since I liked to change it out, too. That way, I had 3 backgrounds to choose from at any given time. And I stood them up in my 'real' closet when I wasn't using them. Just an idea I thought I'd share. I was glad I did that cuz I always like to change things up. :) Thanks again.

You could also buy a tension rod so there is no need to use power tools or screws to install it. It works well if you're not going to hang anything too heavy. You can find some inexpensive ones at the dollar store.
