I wanted a pier to save setup time but didn’t personally like the rats nest design and wanted something bolted directly to the pier. I designed and built this adaptor plate to allow me to do this. Many thanks for my friend for the loan of his lathe. My Boxford A lathe didn’t have a big enough chuck to fit this 200mm dia aluminium billet so I used his lathe initially to turn a shoulder so I could bring it back to my workshop and finish it off. Also thanks to my brother in law for welding the pier together. The pipe for the pier took some sourcing! It’s just short of 200mm diameter and has a 9mm thick wall. It is a piece of drill pipe from an unused oil drill and I did a 4 hour round trip to collect this - finding cheap, thick and large diameter pipe, and only 800mm is not an easy task. I’m quite new to astronomy and have no experience with piers. From an engineering point of view, I just wanted to keep away from the rats nest design as it seems a strange concept to build such a strong base and then suspend the mount on relatively thin threaded rod. Thanks for watching and appreciate advice and comments.
