I like the crimper, I have a old pair of bolt cutters and have been thinking of modifying the jaws to make them into crimpers. Sure would be nice if you had an induction heater that would fit the butt connectors. Looking good so far. I don't know how you got that much work done without Horus helping though?
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lioyd, I dont know if I would unless there a crappy pair. AAhh Crap might as well lol. Everyone seems to like this pair that I have lol. Ive been wanting to make a small induction heater to mess around with. Yeah my little buddy hasnt been down much problyfrom of all the soldering and solder fume extractor is kinda loud. Solder fume extractor. You should put a big clear juicy bottle cut in half (vertical cut straight through center) and stick it on top part of the scoop facing down. Man, you fume paranoid guys are weak, I've been soldering since 13 and I'm now 47yo... nothing wrong with my LUNG........ ;) oh btw, was thinking something cool. 3D print battery holdars and between the bits where the batteries have no contact put water cooling through it (bit like car engines). I'd be worried if a cell explodes and water goes everywhere though, but was just thinking cool water cooling ideas. PS: what's wrong with the APC UPS beeping the background, you running on battery or something? Pull the buzzer out ;)
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
Thats a great Idea. Like a little vent hood or whatever. IM DOIN IT!!! It has pretty good suction right now as it is. Not much get past it. In the video it looks like it was just goin straight up but it was actually curving over and being sucked in :) Yeah I mentioned it being water cooled in some comments a while back if it ever got hot enough but I dont think it will need it :) The beeping was mainly my Foxnovo chargers. Probly rip out the beepers on a live stream here in a few days :D
@korishan7 жыл бұрын
Since you were putting "Ferrels" (not butt connectors) and using a "Swaging tool" (not crimper) and then soldering, you could of just swaged the connectors w/o adding the wire around the 10 gauge. That swager does some massive compression on the ferrels. After all, it's used to crimp wire together and hold 100's of lbs. The ferrel would of actually squeezed into the wire. You could also use: goo.gl/JAhH3N (eBay Link) Good job, though :) 👍
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
+Bobby Hicks YEEESSSS! Swage! Thats what I thought it was but couldnt think of the freakn name! I did try a test piece without the wire wrapped around it and it was loose. I also tried a shorter piece of copper tube to overlap the 10g with the buss bar but it was to tight. So this is what I went with. Ill check the link when I get home, thanks.
@Dingbat2177 жыл бұрын
Yeah as long as the crimper swaging tool compresses the ferrule well enough that it deforms the wire it's put on then you should have a strong joint. You can test that by taking a few short wires and crimping them together without soldering them and then cut the ferrule in 3 parts so that each cut exposes each wire. Study the cut parts and check for deformation of the wires, especially on the twisted copper wires together partm they should all be hexagonal and not round anymore, that will show you that the tool crimped the ferrule well enough to the wires. They should de compressed enough that they will actually cold-weld together to you should not be able to take the ferrule off again even if you cut the ferrule into pieces... But looking at the video I think you have some very good joints even without soldering them. :-)

What made you decide on .5A fuses?
@AveRage_Joe6 жыл бұрын
I decided to use the .5a fuses (they pop at 2a with my test) because 1st- I have the powerwall in my house. I live in Omaha NE and the winters can be -29f for weeks on end and summer can be over 100f for the same amount of time. I didnt want to have to get or build a shed or outbuilding to house them all in. 2nd- Since there in my house I wanted to make it as safe as I could. 3rd- I wanted the fuse to pop sooner on its way out vs later at a much higher amp possibly causing problems and therefore making it unsafe. 4th- Since there used laptop cells the max discharge would be around 1amp. Most of the time the discharge rate is way lower and a fuse that pops more than double the discharge rate is pointless. Of course this is all my opinion as well. 😃👍
@AveRage_Joe6 жыл бұрын
Not sure why that line is though all the text????😳
@sergedutremble29846 жыл бұрын
Makes sense now that I know the ".5A" fuse blows around 2A. Can't really trust the specs can we!
@AveRage_Joe6 жыл бұрын
The 1a fuses also blow at 2amps but have just a hair less resistance. If I were to do it over I would go with those!

When you have the packs sitting on the table they are positive to negative, but in the server case they are positive to positive. How are they strung for the full power box? What is the AH of each pack?
@AveRage_Joe5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I had to set them in the cabinet kinda funky since I made the connecting cables just a little to long. They are still strung together in 14s. AH on them is 226!

@@AveRage_Joe one other thing your server ups is working as inverter right? But what are you using as a charger for your batteries?

I use solar to charge them back up, I use a PCM60X solar charge controller cause you can change the voltage settings to match your system. Link down below I got it from ebay!

Do you use the 50a or 175 anderson connectors? I noticed you state 10/12ga and a 100a fuse but not the rating of the plugs
@AveRage_Joe4 жыл бұрын
I used sb50 anderson connectors and 10awg wire. Have run it at 70amps without an issue for reference. Yeah the 100a fuse is not the correct one by any means. I just needed something in there until I got the correct fuses.
@HartfordHustle4 жыл бұрын

@@AveRage_Joe 0p right now still harvesting modem packs and testing but I will be 14s 80p to start and doing a second bank very shortly after with any luck. hi, greetings from germany. just starting my powerwall and wondering which cap the andersons are? not 50ah but 150ah or?
@AveRage_Joe6 жыл бұрын
Hi and Thanks for watching! Yup they are sb50 or 50amp connectors! Under normal load it will be less than 50amp and also once I add more packs the amps will go down per pack. I have also run over 72amps through them without an issue😲🖒
@JasonSimpson19667 жыл бұрын
I've been stalled out on my project since February when I had to make an emergency trip to Illinois, so I've missed a few episodes. What did you finally settle on for fuses?
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
Ah man, everything ok. You back home now? If so Time to get after it :) I got the .5 cause I was excited, probly shoulda got the 1a because its just a little less resistance but oh well. You should binge watch some of the last vids. There Great;)
@Dingbat2177 жыл бұрын
Awesome progress! :-) How are you going to make damn sure that those exposed battery bus bars will never touch the bus bars on the cell pack next to it? As far as I can see if you connect the cell packs up as you did in this video then any two bus bars next to each other will have one cell pack voltage differences between them so if you have a fully charged battery you will have 4.2V and lots of angry pixies wanting to make a shortcut back home blowing up all of your fuses on the shorted cell pack in the process! Also you should make sure that none of the bus bars can short to ground / chassis as that would be equally disastrous... It _will_ be spectacular so make sure you video it and share the result here! :-P
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
+Morten Mortensen Thanks Morten!!! Ill probly end up puttin somthin inbetween the packs like plexi glass to make sure they dont say HIIIII 🔥💥 Ill keep a live video stream on them 😉 Yuppers I plan to put a cut in a piece of black or clear rubber hose on the shelf edges for that very reason 👍
@Dingbat2177 жыл бұрын
Cool, I would probably look at making a tray of some HD plastic of some kind to put inside the metal tray that the upside down shelves forms. Maybe you could use some acrylic plastic and then glue spacers in between the battery cell packs? Or maybe even just take a piece of acrylic plastic that's wider than the tray is and then heat form it into a UUUU shape with one battery cell packs in each U? Acrylic is easy to heat form and you only need the sides of the U to be maybe 1" tall to keep the cell packs from sorting out. Or simply make some a wooden tray with a bit of plywood and some 1" by 3/8" wood strips glued onto the plywood, paint it your favourite colour, put the shallow plywood box with dividers into the tray and job done...

fuck m8 u crack me up with ya vids... and that crimper u will be handing down to ur great gran kids... so look after it, the only problem with it its big bulky and heavy, if u can make a jig for it like holding 1 handle in the vise, so when u crimp it is more stable and u wont bust fuses or wire links. I realy dont think u need to crimp them cos the solder will do what is required, in this case u do 1 or the other. the con of the situation is the heat and the other con is the mechanical force breaking links and fuses.... try a few with just soldering and the look will be alot neater too. remind me of the times ur streaming pls so i can stalk ya live in the chat.... hahahahaha.
