Wow. (Deep breath), this is why we have fuses, perfect example. That could have been SO MUCH worse. I hope a lot of newbies see this video it’s pretty important! I shorted an 18650 last week during a tear down of a laptop pack. I was snipping the cathode to get the weld smooth and touched the casing. DAMN. I don’t think people realize hot hot these get in real time. I could feel that Cell get very hot in under 2 seconds! So tell us or better yet link us to the fuses you are using it might help other stay safe. The Hello Kitty 🐱 apron is really styling! 😂😂🤪🤪🤪💥💥💥💥💥💥. Love your sense of humor. Bryan

Yes for sure this is a Prime example of one of the reasons to have fuses. Granted most of the time the packs wont be hooked up in series on your work bench but still...... Yeah I try to be as careful as I can be taking the packs apart and sometimes Ill make a few sparks! I updated the description box with links to the glass fuses!!! The Hello Kitty apron is hilarious so I just had to wear it LOL😆💥👍

This is absolutely a validation to the early work you put into testing per-cell fuse options. You could have blown 200 fuses and became a statistic.

@ljy176 жыл бұрын
Tiny Solar Shack Yes it’s very important, the current these packs can supply could easily weld pack bus bars together if accidentally shorted, then you have a melt down disaster on your hands!!!!. Fuses are a MUST ! I accidentally shorted one of my packs out a few weeks ago - used a non vde screwdriver so screwdriver shaft shorted the battery pack, opps. No sparks as pack was reactively low voltage (~3.6V) just saw the fuses glow and melt quickly.. I use the same fuses as average joe - 1.5 or 2.5 rating I believe. I tested them on my lab power supply and they always fail immediately after 4-5A. My cells Samsung 26-C’s can max output 5A continually, but system will only pull ~1A each when inverter is fully loaded. So 1.5-2.5 fuse rating is good for my set-up. Newbs to this need to take note as this needs to be thought about and understood, why skimp on one of the lowest cost parts of your build. Buy proper fuses don’t use thin wire or resistor legs. Not worth cheaping out on this part!!
@AveRage_Joe6 жыл бұрын
Agree 100%! Fuses are a must and they are cheap. Why cheap out more on something that is safety related!!!

Terry Texas I'm working on a pack where I can pop them in or out for balance and if one goes bad. I'm making copper leaf contacts and fusing them together. It just seemed that one fuse would be sufficient to break the connection, but I'm a noob at this so....🤫

Does your UPS/inverter output a sine wave or a square/modified sine wave? I've found that some UPSs have extremely dirty square wave output, and others are a cleaner square wave, but still a square wave (as viewed on an Oscilloscope.) Only the pure sine wave output UPSs please all devices I plug into them. Some devices are less forgiving to the square wave inputs.
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
Yeah the manual states its a pure sine wave. I dont have anything to actually check it other then a watt meter that shows 60hz. I know on a square wave it will show dc on the hz setting.

Hello Avg Joe, kind of have been going in this direction for awhile now. I have been looking at building a 3 wheeled Trike / car for the last 5 years or so and time usually helps guide direction for me anyway. so cut to point. have given up on a car and have decided on building a E Bike using my old bike with a hub motor kit and time changed things again and I fell into buying a used EBike made by Magnum Bikes and have enjoyed it so much im riding it all winter up here in Maine. 8 degrees now and going for a ride in a few hours... so to the point again. I'm building a 48 Volt battery using 18650s around 20 Ah and have it ready to solder up everything but I like the .5 amp fuses your using. if that's the right size. and want to order some to complete it. is this a good idea for a Ebike battery. assuming the powerwall and ebike battery are closer enough to use for either. Q do you still like the fuses and would you recommend them for an ebike battery. I like the looks of repair and changing out fuses and battery's if need be. sorry on hard getting to my point. I have so many questions and will try to be clearer in the future. Thanks Vic / Dogboy
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do a lot of the same and time usually will redirect me lol. I think my uncle has one of those ebikes and he loves it as well. You are dedicated to cruise in those temps. How far do you go usually? How many amps does your ebike battery pull? That would help in deciding the fuse rating. I would think you would want a little higher like maybe 3-5amp fuses to keep the resistance down for an ebike. In a powerwall situation with a tone of cells its not much of an issue. Also keep in mind that the lil glass fuses can break easily from the bus bars moving around. You would need to be a little careful handling the packs and make sure that it is secure in the bike. Mostly the fuses on the ends are the ones that break easily, ones in the middle dont break. But YES I still love the glass fuses and will continue to use them. Yeah I made my cell holders for the ease of replacing cells if I need arises. BOOM😜🔥
@victorvardamis27327 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back to me. I'll answer on my bike rides during the winter months. I wear layers and there is a balance to being warm too hot or too cold. im working on accepting getting cold some and wearing a little less for comfort in moving around. lately I go by my hands. when im out riding I wear these insulated rubber glove with neoprene inside layer. there cheap at the local Job Lot store $3.00 crazy price and very warm for quite a while. at 35 degrees I can be outside for hours and not have cold hands. but at 7 degrees its about 30 mins maybe 40. so at about 30 mins my hands start feeling cold so that's my turn around point. I can get back in 15 mins or so and that's a good ride for that cold. 4 degrees is the coldest ride and at night. I enjoy night riding in winter as there are less cars on the road. have to be careful. wear a mask at times and have several lights two rechargeable headlights one very bright. again cheap ebay light. runs on 4 18650 s and came w charger for 20.00 bucks. ( I might be posting some videos sometime soon on my adventures . so back to how far. average winter ride is 4 to 5 miles. coldest days 3 and nice day maybe 9 . thats winter snow and Ice . I even made my Smart Sam tires into DYI studded tires. using 1/2 in x #8 sheet metal screws. to me what your doing sharing your journey is awesome and teaching what you have learned. Its awesome. I've been watching several Battery guys Bike Guys etc. several years ago I built a Stereo tube amplifier using you Tube videos. and have learn to change break shoes build things. I have been a builder my whole life and have always done as much of everything myself that I could. well I have gone on long enough on the How far I ride question. I have to say I have a problem with my left leg 5 years ago I almost lost it and very glad to say I still have it but biking was becoming very hard including balance and getting on and off quick enough and trying to fall less. and being able to peddle up what used to be easy hills were becoming very hard and with the eBike its much nicer. I live on a long hill at the bottom and by the time I got up to the top I was spent before getting any distance. not the first stage is easier and making the rest more enjoyable. I'll check into what my motor is pulling and get back to you. I'm thinking of using a wire fuse just need to figure the guage . have it saved jut escapes me now. your doing a great job. Thanks for more than you know. Vic

Why not throw in a extra safty measure like a thermol fuse to prevent over heating cells when charging or heating
@AveRage_Joe5 жыл бұрын
I guess one could do that. I know my packs dont get very warm or hot even but you could for sure use them. Batriums longmons have temp sensors on them and you can set it up to disconnect or turn on fans at desired temps.

Congrats. Fuses did their thing and you didn’t burn the house down. I was tearing down a pack and damaged a battery It started burning and then at the same moment my 3 year old came home and wants to see what daddy was doing. She wanted to play. I broke into sweat as I was trying to extract the burning battery from the pack and get it out of the house while simultaneously trying to get my child away I was getting excited, my daughter started crying, and my wife didn’t understand what I was doing. Fuses good. Chuck damaged batteries. Do tear downs in a safe place. Avoid shorts. Avoid over amps charging and discharging Avoid over temp.

What do you think about the idea of shrink wrapping all but what needs to be exposed on each pack like just leave the batrium plugs exposed and maybe a window to look at the fuses but have the rest shrink wrapped? If you had to replace a fuse you could just cut away that area and then tape it back later. I used clear shrink wrap on the packs I made to keep what happened to you from happening from me. I don't have my packs fused yet so I guess I had a lot more to lose. After seeing this video I may just add fuses to my packs as well. These batteries put out a crazy amount of amperage so I am realizing that we have to be vigilant to stay safe. By the way I like your vacuum tube hose thingy. Does the sound of that motor interfere with the mic pickup? Oh and my wife cannot comprehend any of the technical jargon that you use but she says that she likes it when I watch your videos over anyone elses because you are more authentic than any of the other people in the videos that I watch. Se loves your childlike innocence and it makes us both laugh. There is bound to be negative people that will come in and comment on some of your videos, but I hope that you will remember these words the next time someone tries to share there darkness with you and will serve as a reminder that it is there darkness and not yours. Thanks for all the time and effort it takes to share your experiences here with batteries, solar, and inverters. God bless.
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
That is a possible solution! The batrium longmons would need to be away from the heat shrink possibly because they can get quit hot. I think Ill use kapton take along the bus bars to prevent possible fuse poppage! I would add fuses or fuse wire for sure!!! You never know when or where a mishap could happen! Well tell your wife thank you very much and I am being the true me! I would rather be me then try to act like someone Im not!!! I have been down the road of other peoples darkness affecting me or the things I do and it was not fun! After a spiritual awakening, most things dont bother me unless I have a lesson to learn! @AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
There is a glitch in the matrix😱😆 I agree that life is exciting cause I love to tinker!!! I have tested many fuse wire and copper wire and decided to go with the glass fuses because I wanted the fuse to pop around 2amps so if a cell decides to self drain or just go bad in general it will pop the fuse sooner vs eventually pulling 10amps slowly over time and make a glowing red wire and be a possible fire hazard. With the glass fuse its all self contained. Thats my point of view on it at least. Many people are happy with a 10amp wire tho! 😀👍

I absolutely HATE soldering, though, so maybe I'll somehow stick with the magnets... maybe can stick the fuses under the magnets. This aluminum duct tape's gotta go.. I'm only using one 100w panel right now so I'm concerned that if I add too many more 18650s the panel won't be strong enough to charge it all. 3S15P right now, was thinking about doubling it.. second 3S15P in parallel. or I might get impatient and just bring it up to 4S15P...
@aspendell2097 жыл бұрын
@bcmasur Be careful. If you are wiring the lipos as a direct replacement for the dead lead/acid battery you will fry them at 3S. Typical charge on lead/acid is at least 13.8Vdc, which would put you way over 4.2v per cell (possible fire/explosion). However 4S would work fine in that configuration.
@bcmasur7 жыл бұрын
Aspendell I'm not using SLA anymore, I just wanted it for the DC->AC inverter. I'm using only 3S15P 18650 li-ion, not lipo!!! I'm not plugging this UPS into AC power again, ever, that would be going backwards, I'm just trying to run some little AC stuff off of my solar panel on the roof. I'm hot charging my 3S15P 18650 pack off of my 20V 4.8A solar panel. No BMS, no charge controller, nothing needed but daily eyeballing to make sure nothing is broken. To further clarify, I'm wiring my 3S15P (18650) directly into this inverter as its power source to provide AC. 100W solar panel is on the OTHER end of the 3S15P. Aspendell, if there is still something think I'm forgetting about, please, please let me know. I'm not going to wire this up for about another few more days, since I'm kind of lazy like that and like to mull around a bit before doing anything that might be stupid... not trying to burn my eyelashes off...

YES!!!! Lesson learned for sure lol. I put them at an angle to try and get the soldering heat away from the actual fuse in hopes to not mess up the integrity of the fuse since heat can change how the fuse could react!

If there is rainwater on the screen that might be the problem.

got guys good with the boom intro . browsing on a TV hooked up to the HiFi .... yup i said HiFi am old school like that! sorry about the fuses; a suggestion, and not to jinx you but dude put some insulation between the packs in the server rack... like the spongy material that yoga mats are made of?
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
To bad I didnt get it on camera although it wouldnt have been much of a show since the fuses popped instantly( thank god). Could of been a really bad day! My dad still uses his HIFI stuff and it sounds awesome!!! Yeah Ill be using something in between packs for sure!!!😀👍
@Dingbat2177 жыл бұрын
Sound bars may sound alright, if you're half deaf, but nothing beats good set of hifi speakers with dual 10" drivers and a couple of 14" sub-woofers with full surround sound... :-) The wife hates the amplifier and all of the wires but boy does it sound good! And she has admitted that. I love my wife! :-)
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
I think we all hate the wires but if you have a stereo cabinet or something to hide those wires and there out of site they dont exist😉😀👍

If it's an LG or ViewSonic flat screen TV usually it's just the power supply of the power supply starts failing off frequency which causes lines in the TV sometimes before they fail the use of brand called craps on you can buy kits to replace the caps look at pastors that are bad are usually have a bubble on top of the cap if not by the kids replace the mole on the power supply just do a Google search of your TV model find out the most common problem soon pretty handy save yourself some money plus you can get some at the second hand store and pour your recycler and fix those ones as well you'll be loaded with TVs
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
Yeah the tv upstairs was a LG. All the caps appear to be good. Where I broke a little piece of the screen off, there was like 10 little wires running through there and that is whats causing all the lines. I have fixed a lot of tvs that way by replacing all the bulged caps from my recycler lol. I do have about 6 tvs down here now that are a little newer ranging from 42" to 60 or 65" and the caps all look good so it has to bet a fet or something. Ill have to investigate more.😀👍
@kurtzxcvb34817 жыл бұрын
AveRage Joe you can also check the capacitors if you have a voltmeter that does resistance based on uf rides I sent you the message before I wash all the vgao if you need any help I've repaired 2000 TVs
@AveRage_Joe7 жыл бұрын
If I have it open Il for sure look at them but I dont think mine will check resistance on uf. I do need to fix those bigger tvs tho!

You should turn every other pack, then this cannot happen, because you will always have the sides that are connected by a connector next to each other.
@AveRage_Joe2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that would be ideal for sure! In my rack, they sit better the other way sadly.

+bcmasur Ya these 1gigers I have wont mine either. There probly messed up anyways as They were freebies from recycler!
@bcmasur7 жыл бұрын
BOOM! ehheheheh it's not because they're 1GB but because they don't support the necessary protocols such as ati/amd needs at least OpenCL 1.2 I just won an M5A97 on eBay for $61, been using an M3A78 with only DDR2 RAM, moving on up! next will probably be a new video card so I can GPU mine (or play new games)
