I'm a drywall/steel-stud estimator and usually, when I see engineer drawings for stand-alone steel stud structures, the cross bracing is steel flat stock. It's not expensive and likely gives better rigidity. Also, someone in the comments below mentioned the screws you're using are wood screws. I tend to agree that you probably need a fine thread self-drilling screw instead, for it to stay tight. (but I'm not an expert at 'how to' construct...I just price the work LOL But I admire you guys doing all this yourselves - it's really neat!

Everyone in the comment section is apparently expert builders and everything is wrong, ha. Just because you were taught a certain way doesn't mean it's the only way that works properly, I'm a by the book type of person but I've seen many things done different ways in construction and it held up just as well. Like those saying you have to glue the OSB as well as screw or it's not structurally sound, nonsense, have you ever seen how strong walls are after screws alone? And how well they hold up after decades? Glue is nice but not by any stretch a necessary step, that goes for many things, overkill building is great but it is often just overkill.
@jerryspalding32683 жыл бұрын
for more strength on load walls could insert 2x4s in side aluminum stud centers and would add more attachment to outer screws for more hold down. Scews back out over time with contraction from heat and cold. over time

My fiance and I are in the process of getting started building our tiny house! We just bought a trailer (I found a 50 ft house moving trailer for $400 that i am going to be cutting down to size, so thanks for the tip). Although I have a pretty extensive construction background, I have been struggling with finding the best processes for a tiny house. I am really thankful i found your channel, you have answered many question marks i have been trying to solve. Keep up the good work!
@loriann82984 жыл бұрын
@Get busy Live'n or Die'n can you not do wood on these trailers instead of metal? i want a loft but id rather build off my trailer and add to. i mean im no dummy either and i lived with a framer. but that being said i realize weight on a trailer can be an issue. mine wont be moved alot. but it will be on crown land in 2 different areas all spring summer and fall and then eventually parked for good come winter again. im a little uneasy about this metal. just so much work and i see so many others opinions that do make sense to me too. Can this build not be made with lighter wood, load bearing beams etc
@loriann82984 жыл бұрын
meaning on the same structural frame. my trailer is 42 ft its more of a house trailer style and very very heavy as is..not a park model..its the older style with the full length slide out. ill be removing slide out as its damaged anyhow now. any help would be great. Thanks

I am working on a tiny house. And I have been doing research on the whole osb/ plywood thing. From what I read osb is actually heavier and off gases more formaldehyde. Here in the Canada every time there is a natural disaster somewhere they use that as an excuse to jack up the price of osb. What use to 6 bucks CAD has jumped to near 18 in some places. These prices are close to plywood prices now. On the green side osb can be made from smaller trees like poplar. I know poplar quite well since it is the most prolific tree that grows up here. But it does soak up moisture and rots quickly. This is a complaint I see often on the internet about OSB. I noticed you guys did a great job wrapping your house and ensuring no moisture can get in. I have also seen this first hand in the house I built here. I was injured in a car accident and didnt get house wrap or siding up. I have swollen walls and black mold in the fiberglass. I hope to avoid both in the tiny house. looking forward to seeing the progress of your home. LOve your videos. Rod www.nachi.org/osb-plywood.htm

Great job! At this stage I wanted to address a question from a recent clip you did. You mentioned stucco at the tiny house show the other day. My tiny house (built on slab, not wheels) has EIFS stucco that is applied to 1 inch foam which is nailed on after you cover your OSB with a house wrap. The finish is durable, and flexes enough to work on a tiny house or at least parts of it...IMHO. Any cracks that appear later no big deal since you have your moisture barrier doing the work of sealing the wood. The KEY POINT is that the extra inch of foam on the exterior really adds to your insulation quality, and if protected with an overhang you won't have to paint it for a long time. Plus I think it is actually lighter than hardiboard. EIFS is not exactly DIY, but then it could be with a little study and a few practice pieces probably. You guys can do anything I think!!
@tiytinyityourself77337 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! Thank you for the insight! Will look some more into it since we are at the stage of deciding on siding. We actually have done this before when we built a bio-diesel station in college.
@woody33077 жыл бұрын
The EIFS could be great, but I have never seen a mobile tiny house with it so who can say with authority the outcome. I can only vouch for it on a slab tiny house. Still if you can get that layer of foam on the outside under whatever you use It could make the house more comfortable and energy efficient, and the foam weighs nothing. However, that adds an extra inch between your fastener surface and the OSB too so maybe not as tight. I think it would do great with vinyl or galvalume which I have seen on tiny homes. It can go under hardiboard, but is that stuff too brittle for bouncing around in transit? I am wondering though if with the steel framing that it is needed. Steel is thermally conductive, but it is so thin that if surrounded with foam in the wall what the effect will be on the R factor in total. Wood studs are not as conductive, but they are so fat the outer layer of foam board really does help. Best of luck with the project, and I can't wait to see your next chapter. Thanks for sharing. You two are the greatest and true leaders and examples for our future world.

When installing OSB on exterior studs. The grid lines on OSB should be exposed toward you cuz u will be able to see where to screw or nail the OSB to the studs. The lines are set up for 16 inches O.C.
@tiytinyityourself77337 жыл бұрын
Yes but they become irrelevant once you start cutting up the sheets. Where the sheet lands on a stud may not be on the 16 in line mark, or you might have a window. We also have 24 in on center studs. Maybe on a large house project they are more useful but not for us.
@webtheweb6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter to them cause they installed the sheets horizontally, thus not taking advantage of the sheating to it's potential, also I don't see enough spacing between the sheets, just saying

You used "wood" screws with a course thread meant to anchor boards into "wood studs"... not pan head sheeting screws with a fine thread meant to anchor boards and sheeting into "Steel Studs". The screws are self counter sinking so when you pre-drilled with a countersink bit you reduced the effective thickness and strength of the OSB sheathing. I understand your project and like it but others that follow should not make the same mistakes. Also with respect to code for buildings... this is a vehicle and the stresses on the road exceed what a building experiences in its entire life.

Plywood is more durable and there are water resistant ones ,and there are water resistant osbs, this one is ordinary, but I like your idea I had the same one and after building metal construction and outside walls I would use polyurethane foam insulation inside construction, inside walls to make whole construction more durable.
@peterrussell94737 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I would have definitely fastenned the wood on with glue as well at those screws, to add the strength of the wood to the metal whose strength is decreased by the screws. And I think I would have used better wood than that, marine plywood.

OSB is a bad choice because it's heavier. Plywood is as strong and is lighter. You'd be surprised, especially in the US, how much tiny house owners complete ignore weight or don't take it into account enough. But, hey at least you're doing steel framing which is a plus; So many using osb and wood framing and have a tiny house that weigh a shit ton.
@tiytinyityourself77336 жыл бұрын
I was concerned about this in the beginning but the weights appear to be very comparable. Our 7/16" OSB is lighter than standard 1/2" plywood at 46 vs 48 lbs. Maybe they are about the same at the same thickness, maybe plywood is 2 lbs less. Check out "Choosing between oriented strand board and plywood" by UMASS Amherst. Thanks Fly.

@flybeep16616 жыл бұрын
Actually....not. Some bad construction choices have been made on some of their vids. OSB is a bad choice too because it's heavy. They do a steel frame to make it light and then diminish that by using OSB because "it's cheap". Steel framing is slightly more expensive than wood framing so essentially their choices of material don't add up.
@lukewells61066 жыл бұрын
I have to agree. The use of that type of material is a poor choice. OSB over time losses it's layer bonding and expands. This wicks water like a sponge, adding weight and mold, rot. This house is also bolted to the trailer with like a dozen 1/2 steel bolts? The sheer point divided by the wind force sitting still at 20MPH is enough to move that house off the trailer. It's really tall with a ton of surface area. Another HUGE mistake they made is not using any bonding agents in the build! HBT, or Liquid nail...the cross brace sway of a moving vehicle will be the down fall of this structure. Not taking advantage of the surface rigidity if the parallel planes of the wall by adding bonding? Probably the biggest no-no. I hope they don't die a crashy death when that thing crushes the tow vehicle when someone pulls out in front of them...

Don't metal studs reduce the R-value of walls more than wood studs?
@romainsoufflet17797 жыл бұрын
Billy Clabough I would say it's not significant if the insulation is carefully done
@gblakev7 жыл бұрын
they discuss insulation in another video
@billyclabough98357 жыл бұрын
Insulation between the studs will not affect the loss of R caused by switching from wood to metal studs. The insulation would have to be added between either the stud and the outer plywood (which they are not doing) or the stud and the inner drywall. However, if you did that and used wood studs, the R value would be better. I don't know how much R is loss. It may be insignificant, and the weight saving may more than make up for it. Would be an interesting experiment. The same is true with the metal trailer, which is why some builders don't let the subfloor or frame touch the trailer. They sandwich board-Insulation between the trailer and frame.
