DIY Tire Changer - Shop/Home Built: Motorcycle, Automobile and ?

I have now been able to mount & dismount both automobile and motorcycle tires with my shop/home built manual tire machine. In this video I dismount a used motorcycle touring tire and mount a new Dunlop Elite 4 tubeless rear tire.
The Elite 4 is a stiff side wall touring tire that is difficult to mount with just tire spoons. This type of tire was the reason for developing the machine. Also, I am a DIYer.

I like that. I have been working on learning the limits of my machine and then improving it. I have gone from 3 clamps to 4, added an overhead arm to support the machine's axle and improved the duck head attachment. This new version should be posted next week. I will have some simple sketches with dimensions at the end of the video.

For installation, put the "Yellow thingy tool" on the other side of the duck head and turn the tool clockwise and it will be easier.

That's a pretty cool set up. I've changed Dunlop bias ply tires by hand but I've never been able to get the bead to seat. How did you do it?

When I had a stubborn bead, I have been able to get it to seat by bouncing the tire/wheel on the ground. I don't go over 40psi, the bead area still has some wet lube on it and my tire bouncing is not very gentle. I hope that helps. Some people break the bead again and try reinflating the tire.

I tried the changer on a dirt bike tire. It did not work. This wheel had a pair of rim locks installed. The rim locks got in the way of the duck head. So, I used tire spoons. A steel wheel was mounted on the changer. The dirt bike wheel on top of that. A bit of overkill, but it did get the wheel at a better height than a plastic 5 gallon bucket.

That center post would never fit a Ninja 250 or KLR650 wheel… unless you remove the bearings. Never say “never?” ;)

You are correct. The Kawaski 650 and the Nija use a 15mm(0.59”) front axle and a 17mm(0.67”) rear axle diameter. If you had the skills/equipment to build the tool, it would be a simple task to change the machine axle to 0.5” diameter with the proper sized flanged sleeve bearings. I sized the tool to handle the wheels that I would put on it. To date I have done 3 different motorcycles and multiple automotive style wheels from 13” to 18” in diameter.

@@joejoe9773I think it’s safe to say that most are in awe of your ability to build the tool. Good job! Whatever I cobble together will be a bastardized mix of the Pittsburgh machine, a duckhead mount/demount bar, and a 15mm center post from McMaster. ;)

Cost savings. Harley recommends new screws if you pull the old ones.

Tire beads can get stuck and throw the balance off. Not a good idea.

How do the beads get stuck? I have used beads on multiple motorcycles, automotive tires, trailer tires and motorhome tires. Thousands of miles of use and no off balance detected. No one is paying me. Do what works for you.
