Excellent step by step demonstration! The best tutorial that I have seen on a DIY Apex quilt by far! Thank you for showing all of the steps. Happy trails :)

I’m your height and size so used this exact tutorial to make my black and purple quilt. I took it on a 4 day (3 cold nights) backpacking trip in the smokies last July! This was so clear and easy to follow. I don’t even sew, but my quilt was solid, lightweight, compact, it kept me plenty warm, and still serves me well for my overnight camping trips!! Thank you thank you thank you! :)

Ordered materials based on your video and constructed two 6oz Apex quilts in about 5 hours. First time sewing so thanks for the clear and concise DIY video and template really helped me understand things and very much got the MYOG bug.

Smart to have the insulation against the feed-dogs, I've seen a lot of folks use tissue paper backing when sewing thin material like that and it always looks like a hassle. Your way looked easy

Reptar Hikes I ended up using 6.0 from dutchware. I'm making a second 2.5 to go over it to hopefully get down to 10 degrees comfortably. Weight ended up at 16 oz.

That ultra-high pitched repetitive glockenspiel riff started sending me potty after the 5 minute mark lol. It was pleasant enough for the first few minutes, then it started gradually creeping up on me until I busted at about 5 and a half minutes lol.

Hi Heidi. I know it's old but thanks for posting this. Is there anything you would have done differnently now that you've had time to use the quilt? Oh, and when you're sewing over where the webbing is do you have to adjust the bottom sewing tension? Thanks.

This is so inspiring!! Why buy when i can make, now that you've shown me how. Thank you! On your materials, how do you know how many yards to order? Is that the first number - ie, you ordered 2 yards of climasheild?
@ReptarHikes5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I ordered 2 yards (6 feet) climashield. A taller person may want a foot or two more.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I loved your video and it enabled me to make a first class ultralight and durable quilt for my 12 year old son! 14.5 ounces! Would you be willing to share a few additional details from your project? Curious to know what size sewing needle you used, thread tension setting, and the style of foot you used? The foot in particular is of interest since i wished mine was a bit wider. Thanks!

How did the sewing machine handle the webbing for the buckles? is the webbing thin enough not to need a special needle or thread?

Hey there! I'm Dani! This is awesome thank you so much for putting this together! I'm making my boyfriend and I one for our 2018 PCT trek - maybe we'll cross paths at some point! We just had our permits approved to start May 26th. :) This may seem silly but I'm a little confused on how to get the correct yardage and want to make sure I don't screw it up! I'd like my quilt to be a little wider at the top than yours at 60 inches so that I can tuck it under me more like I would with a blanket at home. (I'm going to re position the clips so the opening at the top isn't too wide when I want it to be clipped together) When you ordered your fabric and fill how many yards did you order/ did you have a good amount left? I'd like to use any extra to make insulated sleep booties haha. I sleep very cold so I'll be getting the 7.5 oz/yard fill instead.

How small can you compress that. Great work BTW.
@ReptarHikes5 жыл бұрын
Maybe like a 8" diameter sphere compressed by hand, could go smaller probably 1-2 inches. I don't usually ball up my quilt I just stuff it in my pack

This is a great how to video, very informative. I’m curious as to how tall are you? I think the quilt was cut to 72 inches? I’m 6’4” and I’ve wondered how long I should make one. Thanks again for the video

Thanks Heidi for a great video. I just finished my 30-degree quilt and I love it. If you ever decide to update this video would you show how you sewed around the corners where the channel are located? I made a boo boo on mine by sewing those closed, but I fixed after I turned it right side out. One other question, how did your quilt you made fair on the PCT?
@ReptarHikes7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, Heidi hasn't used her quilt on the PCT trip yet. Not sure if she will but I'll talk to her about doing a follow up video after she tests it out.
@NomadicBristolview7 жыл бұрын
Make your channel slightly shorter than the end it is on, that way when you sew around the corners the channel will be properly sewn to the quilt, but the ends will remain open. If your ends were sewn shut, it sounds like your channel was just a little too long on both ends. Shorten it next time and you'll be fine.

Wow - just a 50 degree quilt for the PCT? I'd have thought you'd have been in for some very cold nights. How did it work out?

Question before I try this myself... are you using a special needle or thread? What sewing machine setting are you using?

You can see all the specifics in the video description. The thread used was Gutermann Mara 70 thread. The needle used was just a typical sewing needle. Hope this helps.
