After watching, I ran up to DollarTree and got 2 disposable cookie sheets and made this windscreen. It will work out perfect. Thanks.

Simple and exactly what I need. I'll make one of these, which will save me a ton of fuel next time I'm out on a longer hike. My stove was really struggling in the wind last time and I almost ran out of gas because I couldn't protect the stove properly. This will make a huge difference in performance, and a super small difference in overall weight of my pack. Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing man!

I use the same screen for both stoves just add 4 or 5 jumbo paper clips at the bottom for the msr type stove to rise it up

So used the first version with slits to fit on the pot rest above the canister so u block wind from the flame only.
@anarchypoth134 жыл бұрын
I did a mix of this as well. Cut two 1" lips onto each side to sit on the pot handles. Then a tiny hole on the opposite side to site on the pot rest. Works perfect without surrounding the canister
@robertgilbert5112 Жыл бұрын
@@anarchypoth13 I realy don't understand all the worry about the canister exploding. Remember that heat rises and will always move from the canister.Keeping it, the heat , static with nowhere to go is the problem. The windscreens that are made in this article are just fine !!

The wind screen that closes up fairly tight around the alcohol stove should have some small holes added near the base. This will permit the air, which is heated by the stove, to flow upward and around the pot thus transferring more heat to the pot.
@johnmca56434 жыл бұрын
You must mean grams and not ounces? A 12 and 22 ounce wind screen is super heavy. I do like the design.

I have always been told not to use a windscreen that goes all the way down around the fuel canister on a canister stove. They say it is possible to heat your canister too hot and cause a rupture. Canister stove companies don't sell windscreens like that for their stoves because of that. It must be working ok for you though. 😀
@Tory17764 жыл бұрын
That's why the PocketRocket one is a tripod. It doesn't enclose the stove and allows some heat to escape.

I just made one and then I saw this better one haha. So I'll do it again. The only thing I would add is fold in feet, which I would make of a paper clip or other wire and put that in the fold of the two corners, maybe one in the middle. I think it will help a bit with tipping over in the wind all the time, and easy to replace if I folded them too often.
@teejay32723 жыл бұрын
They work well, and that was a solid walk through on how to make them, but I'd really think twice about using the one that wraps around a can. Particularly with no holes. I use mine with a remote canister stove only. They can really can go boom. Good thing about that one is you can wrap it tight, stick in a pot, and it's good to go.
@larshenriksvenballhausen53442 жыл бұрын
when you would wrap it around a gas stove yes... but an Alkohol burner can't go "boom" because there is no pressure on it. that's why there is a non-wrap-around design vor the gas stove and a wrap around design for the Alkohol burner

Great video!...I've done this for years and I can attest that they work great and are pennies to make which is what I like. Although I've never had to use a windscreen for my pocket rocket even in the strongest gales...nor is it the safest practice with a canister stove. I dig your attention to detail with rolling the edges!...

Great table background, great idea and great price. I was just looking at windscreens to buy when I thought: geez, I bet there's a DIY one out there somewhere... I guess to keep the canister from heating up too much, as a previous comment said, you could punch some holes in the bottom to allow for a little, but not too much, circulation.

I've been trying to figure out a way to make a windscreen for my Canister Stove; using a cookie sheet provides me with the additional thickness of aluminum I've wanted. I didn't even need to go out & buy a cookie sheet, I simply used the one I already had when I bought a 3 pack some time ago.

In regards that folding stand that fits on stove, I find they don't provide optimal distance between pot and stove and for alcohol stove that point is very important for a more efficient and quicker boil..

Good video. My biggest fear with this design is the cannister overheating and exploding. I am wondering whether or not drilling a few small holes around the perimeter of the screen would serve to mitigate that risk.

Not sure that would be a problem as the stove is not on for very long. Thanks for watching!

Jim Matiko , no worries about the canister overheating in this situation. To play it safe, you can occasionally touch the canister. If you can comfortably touch it, its still safe (within design spec).
@TheGoatMumbler8 жыл бұрын
I've had the same experience. Heat rises so the canister is safe.

@hillarywalker45876 жыл бұрын
Stanley makes a tall cook pot for around $20. They also have one with a French press insert. When I want to save weight, I just leave the insert behind. You've probably already found an answer to this question since it was posted a year ago.
Hi there! I have to agree with what others already has commented, that this is dangerous. If it hasn´t blown up yet, I would think it is just borrowed time. I would for you own, and other´s safety urge you to encourage not to use this solution. Primus and Optimus has windscreens that clip to the top of the canister - reflecting heat up and away from the canister - and leaves the canister itself unobstructed to dissipate heat to the surrounding air. Although not condoned by MSR, by design it should be much safer.
