So you didn't even tell the viewers that they need to make sure you buy a 5V DC led strip which is very uncommon (12v dc or 24v dc strips are the ones you'll find the most when looking) because the UBS port puts out 5V DC. Also most 2.0 USB ports only put out 500mA and that will not run a lot of LEDS (especially the super bright ones). So for those that tried this and it didn't work that would be that most likely you have 12v dc strips that won't work on 5v dc from the usb port.

@@bboyluda2897 You cant without something to step it up to 12v, but youre still not going to have the amperage. This technique is only suitable for a small number of 5v lights.

Anyone doing this, do it right and don't fuck around with solder. Get up and close, use the MG and make sure you know your voltage. 12v 5 v and the amount of amperage/watts etc. You can also get a 5v to 12v conversion usb unit for some really long strips ( Vehicle strips) to use in your room...blah blah blah.

Hi, Have a 1 meter lond usb strip. I have connected it to the usb cable. ( The red and black wires). The strip does not light up at all when the usb is pugged in. Must I cut the strip shorter?

Yours is likely a 12V strip. USB is 5V. There are 5V LED strips but they are less common.

Is there a certain amount of leds that is safe to be be hooked to the usb? In other words can you hook up the whole roll to the usb.

More LEDs = more power needed, so I guess it's safe if it's all unravelled and not left near something flammable in case they get hot, though uncommon it happens...

Thanks for the info. Tip, like it or lump it, this will help with soldering flimsy tapes and such. Use a pop sickle stick as a backer behind the tape whiles it's in the gator clips. Will definitely save your finger tips and give a solid surface to press into.. which after I said pop sickle stick, you probably said " duh, why didn't I think of that!". LOL

Can it be just any USB end wire that you cut off and strip like a iPhone USB port that you cut the Lightning Charger part off and then solder it to the LED cause mine is a DC12V

I already have a series of small led bulbs connected to usb on my desk, which i have added a resistor to the +ve (red) wire to it but now i am thinking of switching it to led strip lights so is it necessary that i should go for direct connection like in ur video or can i connect along with that resistor to these strips?

Harshith Max just cut the end off the adapter and connect the wires to the usb.

It's less power but it's more power efficient so it can run longer if you are using a battery pack. If brightness is what you are worried about, from what i've read the difference is negligible because brightness is determined by the current, not the voltage. So a 12v strip pulling 1 amp should be the same brightness as a 5v strip pulling 1 amp. One issue though can be distance. 5v won't be able to power as many LEDs as 12v if you are running a long strip of LEDs.

Immediate thumb DOWN! No mention in video OR description regarding WHAT strip you are using. Is it 3014, 3528, 5050, oh wait... I had to wasted extra time reading other comments to discover you are using a 5V strip? why the hell don't you mention that anywhere to begin with? I was wondering why you didn't use a step up from 5v to 12v. Sure these are common on ebay, but 12v is most common and cheap. I hope your other vids offer a bit more in the detail and info department.

i wouldn't try it that long, maybe make it 1 meter max. for the full 5 meters you will need a 12 volt power supply.

Led strips usually have 12 volts, while usb can only supply 5 volts.

Yes because 12v led strips need 12v power supply also, can live well if supported with 12v adapter, can't with 5v adapter because led strips can't supply properly. So you should use 5v led strips to make this
