I don't think white would have been my choice but you did a beautiful job with the piece, and, after all, it's your piece for your home so it should be your taste. Love how you staged it. I have several mission style antiques inherited from my husband's grandmother. She was married in 1905 so she bought furniture in the predominant style of that time.Lucky for me I love it too.

Hah! I know where that Singer Blvd sign came from! I have a couple oak pieces I need to restore and I have been trying to decide whether to go with a light or dark wash. I kind of want them in the same color family so watching this helped me decide (haven’t decided for sure yet) -your neighbor to the south (ABQ).
@coloredcaboosecreations
@coloredcaboosecreations 2 жыл бұрын
Oh shoot busted 😬! Just kidding I found the sign in the backyard at an estate sale half buried in the dirt I had to have it though 😆. Awesome If you want to darken check out the steel wool vinegar way of ebonizing wood. Oak has a lot of tannins so it works very well on that type of wood. Good luck and thanks for watching neighbor 💚

This is my fav of your videos only because I love these cabinets and they are so hard to find. You are SO NOT crazy. Thank you so much for showing us how to rehab a piece like this. If I am lucky enough to find one, I will be grateful to have seen this. I know you are really enjoying this piece and happy all your effort was worthwhile. I'm a skilled creative sewer because I had the fortune to learn young. Although I must say I would not have thought of those leather handle covers on your restored tool cabinet. That was genius. Do you sew with the half size machines? Are they made for a specialized purpose? Thank you again!
@coloredcaboosecreations
@coloredcaboosecreations Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for all your comments. I really enjoyed reading them all and appreciate the time you took to write them. I am not a professional sewer by any means but my grandmother did teach me how to use a machine when I was very young. I tend to prefer to sew on vintage machines because of the nostalgia and I like the way they sound. I have a small collection of half size machines because I’m able to have multiple machines in a small space and I enjoy using them all and being able to take them with me when I travel for work. Hopefully you’ll come across a piece like this for yourself🤞. Thanks for watching.

Would appreciate a review on the surf-prep from someone I'm convinced exists! I'm getting Shakespearean over whether to purchase or not to purchase. I love wax and think that furniture must prefer it as well. Waxed pieces just look happier somehow. The cream colored paint was a better white wash than plain white would have been. Loved its warm glow in the reveal. Thanks for bring this cabinet back to life. I love that you returned the paint brushes to the drawer when you were done as well :)

The color choice of doing the whitewash wouldn’t match my style… but I still absolutely love this. What an amazing job of bringing this piece back to life. I love that you have the restored sewing machines in there as well. You are very talented. Definitely motivates me to give more thought to restoring some pieces that I would maybe think needed to just be painted. I also thank you for the recommendations for products. I bought some of the rust rescue stuff and the oil. I am working on a hutch right now. I had cleaned up the hardware and screws and then the next day the screws were all rusty. Not the first time it’s happened. But great tip to use the oil.

Wonderful job! I have dreamed of finding a piece like this for years - for sewing and art supplies. Complete removal and prep of hardware must ALWAYS be done. If not, the job is always a nightmare piece/sloppy mess someone else must fix later. I've never seen a piece like this from Globe. Truly envious!

This was great! However, with my experience, those knobs were most likely brass plated. If you ever get another item like this, and don’t like the rose gold color, to show off the true brass undertone you have to be gentle because they are just plated aluminum. Boil the hardware in water and vinegar then gently buff out with fine steel wool. Looks great either way! Only learned this trick because I had an old 1930’s house with old original brass door knobs. Thanks for the video!

I think for me, I'd have gone a darker gray color rather than a stronger white, in the corners, but otherwise I adore how this piece turned out, and obviously, it's not going in MY home so my tastes don't actually matter! I think you may own a custom Globe cabinet, btw, because I see several pieces that look like *half* of this old beauty, with drawers instead of glass doors, but not *both* halves. Either way, it's worth a small fortune, and I love that you were able to snag it for your craft room!

WOW what a treasure! This piece and the work you did on it was amazing. You had made comment that maybe you’re weird with some of the work you were doing but I have to ask how can pride in the work you’re doing make you weird!?! I like that you’re ok with the blemishes this piece still has because trust me with all things as well as with people as we age we at some point have marks and blemishes that come with that age usually earned like with this piece that obviously worked hard for it’s owner through the years and because of your work will continue to be useful and it’s always nice to be appreciated;)

Globe Furniture got its start in Walkerville, Ont. (near Windsor) in 1889. It came to Waterloo in 1910. Globe Furniture Co. in Waterloo Canada, known for the ornate wooden pews, altars and pulpits it made for churches in Canada and as far away as Peru and South Africa, also made school desks and theatre seats, etc. Globe Furniture closed in 1968 after being forced into bankruptcy. The plant next became the home of DeLuxe Upholstering Ltd., which made chairs for the La-Z-Boy Chair Co. of Munroe, Mich. The plant was demolished in the 1990s.

Ok, three things. First, awesome job! Second, do some research on the Globe-Wernicke Company and you should learn approximately how old your antique piece is. I believe it predates the "Wernicke" part, which would put this into the late 1800's. Which brings me to the third point. As cool as hairpin legs are on MCM pieces, this piece is at least 50 yrs older than that and should have wood legs if you have to add legs at all. I am honestly not saying this as a criticism. I figure you didn't know how old this piece was and need it for your craft room. Since you're keeping it, that's fine, but if you should find another piece and restore it as beautifully as you did this one, you should have a better idea about what period it came from. Again, REALLY great job!
