You're probably already finished the skull casting, but if you decide to revisit it, I'd suggest using wood or something sturdy to make a box to pour the silicone into when forming the mold. And then using the box to hold the silicone when casting the resin. It'll ensure that the silicone doesn't move as the resin is being poured in and hardening.

Lil tip for anyone using the pour 1:1 silicone, mix slowly and pour over the mould really slowly from as high a point as you can (this will remove a lot of the air bubbles). Also make sure you're wearing a mask and gloves in a well ventilated area/outside when handling resin. It's incredibly toxic and can cause serious health problems if you're using it lots!
@briesullivan6149
@briesullivan6149 3 жыл бұрын
Nice, Can't wait to see how the pressed flower skull turns out! I hope you've got a lot of ventilation and are using a good mask with the resin. I've heard some really nasty stories about people's health becoming really compromised due to not taking safety measures when working with resin.

The problem with the resin and the Hardwarestore silicone is that certain chamicals pass trough the skin, there are methods for skinprotections you can try to avoid longterm damage to the system. Great video as always.

You're a great artist but most of this moulding is more trouble for a worse results. It's better to use a two part silicone, you can get some good ones for any project at smooth on ( they also do resins ). I could see that the two part silicone mold that you made came out the cleanest, they also can set in 30 mins or as quick as 5 mins depending on how long you need. You have to be careful with using a mix of materials for moulding because it can react badly with the resin and sometimes it won't set fully. Also vaseline is the best mould release, just brush a thin layer onto your moulds, it's a household item that professional mould makers often use! I'd happily talk more if you want to start learning about two part moulding as well, as it is one of the things I do professionally

Hey hey, here's a hot tip that many of you know! Alcohol ink is god for coloring resin. Comes in a thousand colors, mix n match for a billion colors, and since it's not water-based (epoxy resin haates moisture) you can add as much as you want! The alcohol will evaporate leaving pure pigment. You can get the lightest tint or make it totally opaque, depending on how much you use. And it doesn't take much. Oh! but beware, resin hates purple. I don't know why. It's rude honestly, but anyone who has ever put many dried flowers into resin can tell you, the purple ones have about a 50% chance of staying purple. (I think it has something to do with heat. and heat science.) I say this because the only problem I've ever had with alcohol inks in resin is with Jaquard's blue-violet. The color just disappeared. Very weird. You can get around this by mixing your own with reds blues and pinks. And hey, you learn a bit more about colors so that's fine and good.

Thank you for the information and production quality in your video! I use that same top coat epoxy for all my epoxy projects, I've been slow on trying anything expensive. I noticed that adding in a lot of acrylic can extend the drying time and may prevent the epoxy from fully hardening. Not stirring the acrylic into the epoxy and just letting it be encased in epoxy can be interesting. Since acrylic and epoxy don't mix, you can make some cool designs with acrylic inside the epoxy.

Crikey you crammed a lot in to that vid! Very informative and humorous, thank you ☺ I'm exploring the single use/reusable materials these days for repairing busted figures ie sword blades, bow parts that have gone missing 😢 Blue Stuff and molten sprue is pretty good but Milliput is probably easier to use but not as cheap as reusing old sprues! When it comes to multiple use molds for unavailable figures I'm drawn to the corn starch to try first.

When you say resin do you mean that this home made stuff will work with fibre glass type resin? bearing in mind it has a high acid content, (that could eat into the mould face) ive heard that (in theory NOTHING sticks to silicone moulds) one of the reasons professional hollywood make up Artists use it apparently.
