We were asked to discuss our rain collection system so we thought this video would give you ideas on how to move water on your homestead without a pump.
Never water your chickens again!! This system has been in place for 3 years, works AMAZING!!

where you put the pvc 90 on the top barrel replace it with a T and extend it above the top tank and it will vent properly

This suggestion may seem crazy, but it's worked out well for me on many occasions, ... check salvage yards in your area. I have walked in looking for a part for one project and literally found exactly what I needed already made for several projects built better than I could have made for far less money. Seek and you shall find. You'd be amazed at what some people take to a salvage yard and sell for scrap price. Usually a salvage yard charges double scrap price and you can get amazing items.

s fetterly - I like your suggestion and use them regularly for other items but I haven't thought about it for the antenna tower. I will start my search and yes your are correct amazing what people sell for salvage price!

I love the idea! Though I would recommend not to stack the tanks on top of the others. I see the reinforcing cage bend in all directions. Make them stack, but let a separate construction deal with the weight of each and every tank, except for the lowest that probably stands flat on the ground. Also attach valves to be able to turn of flow to different sections. It would make it possible to detach and lift them out individually if they have to be replaced or something fails. I have a similar projects but is going to use an arduino control the venting and pressure within the tanks. That excludes any self pressurized environment, witch might be a bit of a drawback in some cases. I wonder what hapends if the tanks are ful and it continues to rain, what do you do with the excessive water?
@ShalomAcres
@ShalomAcres 4 жыл бұрын
The excess water simply overflows at the top/inlet. That is why we keep rocks around the base to prevent things from washing out. I understand your concern about double stacking but these have been this why for 5 years. Sturdy base and level foundation would be keys...thanks for your comments!

Everything is looking awesome, and the diversity of forage coming up in the turf looks like your bees will be happy! On a different subject, I'm sure you know what azomite is, but have you had a chance to check out Sea-90 ocean mineral fertilizer? If you want your foods to be more nutritious, providing those naturally balanced minerals can boost nutritional value in your foods. The only other mineral supplement you may want to add, is a little magnesium sulfate, (Epsom salt), if that's a source of magnesium your ok with. My personal recommendations are 25% of what ever dosage recommend on the package for plants. I've been diving deep into plant nutrition and soil biology. What's being learned is its not about feeding the plants, it about feeding the soil, which in turn feeds the plants, kinda like the gut flora in our digestive tract. Without the gut bacteria we wouldn't get any absorbable nutrients. Well like when people are healthy they don't get sick, it's being found out, that healthy soil biology can actually prevent plant pests, and disease. When the soil microbes are healthy, the plants are healthy. So pests can't stand the taste, the plants also quickly call in specific predators using chemical signals, and the plans fight off any diseases quickly. (Living Web Farms) channel, put out a webinar video called, (High Bionutrient Crop Production with Dan Kittredge Part 1). It's an hour and a half long, and though I'm not the type to endorse any person, the soil science he describes and what's being learned from his on farm testing is pretty amazing. Well worth the time, if you want hassle free food production, of healthy nutrient rich foods. If your in a hurry, just fast forward through the introduction and skip the last 10 minutes, as the meat of the video is about an hour and ten minutes long. Shalom!

me mo - it is funny your are mentioning epsom salt, I just bought 50lbs last week. I was planning to apply it this week before a rain. I have done some research on azomite but almost nothing on Sea-90. I will check it out plus watch the video on soil health. I think you are correct, it all starts with the soil. It has taken me several years to realize this but in areas of our homestead where we have it right the plant grow amazing, little weeds, and the taste of the vegetables are so amazing compared to store bought. Hopefully we will be putting up a video soon showing how we are adding additional nutrition to our soil!. Bees seem to be doing well. 1 swarm we caught 3 weeks ago has pulled comb on 5 frames (both sides), brood on 1 frame, and 2 frames of honey (1 is almost fully capped), so we are feeling blessed. Planning to get some honey in the next 2 weeks from our more established hives!!

Those totes are made to stack on top of each other. They interlock with one another
@jcowan0921
@jcowan0921 4 жыл бұрын
but they are not made to be pressurized. the bottom tote is pressurized by the water in the top tote, which cause it to swell and bulge, which you can see in the video. If you don't space them the way they did, there is enough pressure to push the lower tote vent up against the bottom of the top tote, which causes, breaking, leaking, general badness. side by side is a far better configuration for these totes, but it causes problems getting good pressure without a pump.

What is the pressure coming out of your tank? I'm trying to build something that puts out 110PSI for a large off-grid community?
@AccountInactive

110 psi will require like 250 feet of elevation if you're talking about a gravity powered tower.

The system is looking great bro. One thing I wondered though.... how stable/sturdy is that double stack?? It seems like something that tall and "slender" would need a wider base than that in order not to be top heavy and possibly topple/tip over with some of the gusty winds y'all likely get on some of your hilltops. Or is it attached/anchored to your building somehow in order to help stabilize it?? Didn't notice that if it was/is. ;-) Keep doin' what your doin'... it's obviously workin' pretty well for y'all. Still tryin' to get Aaron & them to head out there so we can visit y'all and check out your homestead someday. ;-)

Hey Jason - you are welcome to visit at any time. The trick was making sure the bottom logs are level prior to going up. The top one is attached to the bottom one with some metal strapping.

Shalom! I have been off-grid for nearly 2 years. I want to make running water for obvious reasons, and had this wacky idea similar to yours, for my family's water supply. Problem is, I live in a Quonset. Is there another way I can collect or use pump, or anything at this point?
@ShalomAcres
@ShalomAcres 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I understand fully but if you can collect water in anything you should be able to find a way to set up a pump, either with a flooded section or out of the top. Hope this helps?

Very nice set up, do you have or have you had any overflow problems from the huge amount of rain this year??? Are you doing anything with solar or windmill power collection???
@ShalomAcres
@ShalomAcres 7 жыл бұрын
s fetterly - after we shot the video on improving our pasture (removing surface rock) we had another good rain (1 3/4" in 1 hour) and water went over both our primary and secondary overflow. Overall everything held up well but we need to cover both areas with more rock, since the rock was pushed down by the large volume of water. We currently are not collecting any energy from the wind or sun on our homestead. We have pieces to build a wind generator but I am still needing an antenna tower. I have been watching craigslist for the past 2 years trying to find one local and for a good price, no luck yet but it will be provided! If you have any suggestions I would appreciate them?!

Shalom Acres I'm also a new sub as of this morning. I watched your series on the root cellar as i hope to build one this spring or summer. One question that i have about your totes is, what about freezing? Have you had any issues? Does it get cold enough there for this to be an issue? Another project that i hope to tackle this coming year is a water tower of some kind. I'm still going over many ideas but my current main concern is the water freezing. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your videos. May the Father bless you and yours.

For every 10 meters of height you get 1 bar of pressure. One tote is 1 meter high. So 2 totes plus some space = 3 meters = 0.3 bar which is not much. A normal pressure for a waterline is 2.5 bar.
