Thanks, I've been thinking about using this for a foot-powered lathe and thought it might be a good test for checking the robustness of the bearings, (lateral force acting on the spindle and bearings considerably higher than the assembly would usually encounter). why is a live center better than a dead or static one? just less friction on the part end you are working on?

I checked a lot of handbooks with woodworking plans. Instructions from stodoys are the best I think.
