Problem: my kids' beds are a constant source of angst, because
1) their sheets slide all over the place, causing me to have to re-tuck sheets every morning, and
2) they are toddlers, and the sheets make bed-making too complicated for them
Solution: SEW THE TOP SHEET TO THE FITTED SHEET!
I did not want to create entirely "zippered bedding," because I wanted to be able to use down comforters (instead of quilts or other non-down comforters used in typical zippered bedding.) However, I still wanted to be able to make their beds in less than a minute, without having to deal with re-tucking sheets multiple times a day. My solution was to sew the top sheet to the fitted sheet, along one side and across the bottom. I also sewed the hospital corners INTO the sheets! This way, the sheets always stay in the same place (all the kids have to do is flip back the corner, and they're perfect!) and I can still have down comforters on their beds.
Maybe this solution will also help you!

Oh my goodness! Can we be friends?! Lol I have been pining over beddys but just couldn’t pull the trigger (even on sale)! I’ll add they are not my favorite aesthetic, but at this point I need function over design. I had zippers galore in my Amazon cart and 3 KZbin videos up my sleeve for the DIY version. I sew regularly (Etsy shop) but was so intimidated every time I thought of it. Plus! I didn’t have 8+ hours of uninterrupted time to make 3 sets!! I thought, “what about Velcro? What about magnets?” Or why not just sew the dang top sheet to the fitted one??? And BAM! I came across your video! You. Are. Genius!!! Thank you so much for a doable solution and without breaking the bank!! Queue the choir!!

I just found out about beddys because toddler life means sheets and blankets everywhere and I really want her to have a tidy calm space. I remembered that my mom sewed hospital corners into all of our flat sheets which I was thinking about. Zippers don't look comfy, and it doesn't look like there would be enough slack in the blanket, also microfiber should cost pennies not hundreds. I was brainstorming 'what if I just sewed the sheets together' then found your video, brilliant! I love the way it still drapes nicely, and still uses a really nice comforter (and doesn't require a huge item to wash and dry) Let out an audible gasp when you snapped the sheet up just like that. The things that excite us now 😂 I'm definitelly doing this- one idea that popped into my mind would be sewing a duvet cover along with it - a toddler size bed would not be to bulky to wash, and the duvet inside would be removable!

Ah I’m so glad! Yes! I totally wanted to keep thinking about how I could just sew the back side of the duvet cover to the sheets so I could still stuff it and it would still hang and also still be fluffy but my brain had done enough thinking haha. You should go for it. We are still loving our system so I can attest that it works!

Same problems with Beddy’s that you have - too expensive, but for us, I also wanted different colors than what they offer. Not sure what to do about it, but your solution is awesome. It also lets the comforter hang over the sides, which I think looks more natural. Thank you for sharing! Maybe I will get brave this winter and give this a shot.

Yes! We really like DOWN comforters, and there's just no good way to make them zippered. They need to hang down and be able to be fluffed. SO I love the solution of just doing the sheets. It's still working like a charm for us!

Great idea. Yes sir, trim off the excess sheet material and you have some scraps to make more rice bags.

Now that it's so ez teach your kids to do it themselves. My mom never made our beds after age 5. Yet we had to make them every morning. (She laundered til we were about 8, then washed our own sheets after that)

Be my friend please! I want to hang out and learn all that you do! I have a sewing machine, my mom is awesome at sewing, but I just am too intimidated to really get into it. Meanwhile, I'm having my 8 year old daughter learn from my mom. I want to make these so bad! Thanks for the info!

How would you do a king for a married couple? Just see the end?
@3141jrichy
@3141jrichy 4 ай бұрын
Yep that’s what I’d do! And leave room so your feet aren’t trapped. So leave the top end hanging over by several inches before you sew. And then once it’s sewn, you’ll be able to pull it back down so there’s room for your feet.

My kids use a quilt and not down comforter. Wondering if I could sew the quilt onto the sheets too. I hate tucking that thing between the bed and the wall too
@3141jrichy
@3141jrichy Жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely. Search "DIY Beddy's" and you'll see some super helpful videos of people doing this with quilts! I made this one specifically because you can't cut a down comforter like you can a quilt. With the quilt, you'll have to cut it and insert a long zipper (Amazon.) The videos I watched were super helpful, if I was going to do a quilt. Hopefully that helps!

I love this idea it may be perfect for the RV. I couldn't really tell from the finished project, did you sew high on the wall side and go down the hospital corner and then go low under the foot end and then back up the hospital corner? Nice job, Beddies are nice but so expensive for occasional use in an RV.
@3141jrichy
@3141jrichy Жыл бұрын
It would be awesome for the RV! I actually didn't go low under the foot end--just straight across. If an adult were sleeping in the bed, they'd probably be annoyed at having their feet "trapped" down there with the sheets not loosening to fit their feet. So I'd have to come up with a solution for that if I was doing it for an adult! There must be some way to make a foot pocket down at the bottom...

@@3141jrichy Another question, I pinned up the sheets tonight and then got so confused thinking I needed to do right sides together for traditional sewing but nothing here gets turned correct? I was stumbling over the thought that I would end up with a raw edge if I cut the excess, finally gave up as I was not thinking clearly!
@3141jrichy
@3141jrichy Жыл бұрын
@@nancysavidge7611 nothing gets turned. So I didn’t do right sides together. BUT I do have a giant flap that hangs down on the wall side of the bed. I don’t care because it just stays tucked between the wall and the bed, but if your bed isn’t against a wall you might care and need to figure out a way to turn under and cut the excess. The way I did it, I didn’t cut any excess. The sheets already have finished edges so it’s not exactly a raw edge, so I’m fine with it. So it goes wall, then flap, then the seam, then the rest of the bed.
@nancysavidge7611

@@3141jrichy That is what I will do then, in the vid you had talked about cutting off some edges and I was over thinking it, thanks.
