On point with the so and so's saying gotta use a certain amount of hardener. What if I gotta skim coat a big area, what if I'm doing a bunch of repeat build up and shaping on something custom with fiber fill....nitwits. The straight edge is crucial. I've also made custom cut putty knives and used washers and stuff for those odd angles and radii on door panels and interior crap.

That was one truly messed up European Mercedes WD115 with / Moon Roof. I have witnessed 23 videos on this car since Pete built a custom rotisserie and started in on the left rear inner wheel house members because there was no frame, very little sub-structure, no inner support structure for the moon roof, hood (Bonnet) underfloor sub-substructure, floor pans, firewall, using a rocker panel for a 4 door, but cutting it to fit a European 2 door, fitting it into the "B" pillar, fixing inner structure for vent drain drain on the right rear. And once including the left rear tail light panel, round floor fixtures, etc. If this vehicle took 516 stamped parts to build it 1976, before they sprayed the entire bottom with some kinda seam sealer, Pete replaced 80% of the car with some hand formed parts and NOS parts they paid dealt for! What an achievement to get it done, completed, straight and painted as Mr. Majestic had the front and rear removed from this car and finished off site. Minnie and Pete trailered the car from Dallas to Moab to finish it. Then tow it back to the Dallas. WoW! That is commitment to get it done!

Great idea using the straight edge for those long quarter panel's 👍🏽 And to see if there are low and high areas. I had used some of that glaze to fill in nicks and pin holes that's some good stuff makes it a lot easier to cover and sand. I agree it's better to hand sand when you get to the finishing sanding so you don't take to much off.

We’ve used long spline tools to spread filler for over 2 decades now. Guess it’s better late then never that you try it... You can also do quarters, doors and any long large contours by flexing the spline tools to the same curve that you need and then pulling the filler along where needed. Glad your eyes are now open. Lol if you are using a spline tool or straight edges tool to spread filler you should never need 36 grit! Start with 80. If you’ve done it right and at the right curve of tailgate or panel is done properly you won’t need to remove much filler before it’s perfect. And you shouldn’t have any low spots when using the spline tools once you have your first build up correctly layered. Sanding and then going back and again using a straight edge again could cause your uneven issues. Good luck.

@bucksnortbumblefuk68722 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, no, he was so close that using bondo like he did is NOT a problem. Anyone with a resto/nice paint job, I guarantee the car has been hit with filler to make it flat. There is no other way. There are guys who can do metal work and make it flat but they will have hundreds of hours in it. Basically any shoe car with a 10k+ paint job, the car has filler on it and primer filler 2 boot.

Pete, I am kind of confused at how you were able to scrape it off even with the outer high spots using the level, making it all level....but then, when you sanded on it, why didn't it lower it back down to be low?? Is it just that the 36 grit took such a small amount off that you can't see it?

@bobfrankish88832 жыл бұрын
Hi Johnny, depends whether you are thinking about taking up auto body repair as a full time job or hobby. I am 70 now, and started restoring cars as a hobby about 10 years ago. I have done 3 projects, done all the welding, bodywork and painting, and they have all turned out pretty good. Channels like Pete's are invaluable, you learn loads. As a full time job though, I would say you have left it a bit late unfortunately, but as a hobby no problem whatsoever.

Sorry Pete, but bondo is a brand of filler... but I'm sure you know that.
@martinsmartinsautobodyandr67402 жыл бұрын
I never sand filler with anything more coarse than 180. You don’t need 36 grit. And if you don’t let it harden how do you know it won’t shrink back like it did. You don’t need to glaze it if you’re a good mud man. I only use 1 substrate . Using to much junk expands and contracts each one different and can potentially separate. Just saying
@gm-lb9oe2 жыл бұрын
He is right. Your just taking the top sticky stuff off, then you go to 80, then primer. With 180 you will get waves. You can sand your primer though with 180, then finish off with 320, then she's paint time
@richardsmith39052 жыл бұрын
A faster method is to cover the entire panel with Bondo. Then use a DA with 40 grit to make a truly flat panel. Watch Bad Chad on KZbin to see it done.
