Many of you ask this question: when is it the "right" time to do a 3-step, or 3-stage, paint correction? In this video, we demonstrate how to do a proper paint evaluation, and we talk you through our thought process behind what pad to use first -- and why. And then, how to determine whether you need multiple pads to get the job done right.

Yesterday I used for the first time the wool pad. What a wonderful product. Before I was using microfiber pad for cutting. The wool pad cut pretty good and finish pretty well too. I was polishing with a 15mmm rupes mkIII on a 2005 black forester. I cant even imagine how well this pad would do on the 25mm!

Perfect timing ! I am currently doing a 3 stage ( may morph into 4 stage .. ) preservation detail on a 1981 Porsche 911SC with single stage paint . Ex California car that was apparently kept outside for 10 + years .. then throw into the mix the passenger side of the poor car was sideswiped the 3rd day my client owned it and now 1/2 the car has clear coat and the roof , rear end , hood and drivers side is all oxidized to all hell single stage , looks like mice used the paint as a skating rink , more rock chips than i can possible fix and paint cracking and rust bubbles .. OHH and i tried the rinseless wash tip with the towel and dang , it worked like a charm , made the second wipe off basically a finish wipe with maybe a little here and there .. Cheers lads :)

The way Yvan moves the rotary is absolutely amazing and zen. Polishing like that is a kind of meditation and everything seems so easy! Probably the wrong video for this comment, but because of 2 people, Yvan and Brian at Apex, today for the 1st time I used my new rotary with a Lake Country purple wool pad with insanely great results. I've been using my 2 DA's for years. But I've got a Tundra with the hardest clear I've ever dealt with. Even heavy cut foam pad with Sonax Cut Max would only get me to maybe 60%. This rotary with that wool pad, goodness. Where has this been my entire life. Skipped and jumped a lot at first but have gotten used to it now with a slight angle. I'm flying over the paint with 90% correction results. All that's left is deep scratches that need wet sanding. If you've never tried a rotary, you must give it a shot.

Love all your content and products. Do you guys have a video of dealing with very faded (matte-like) paint that has been neglected? The clear coat hasn’t failed yet. I have a family member’s car I want to help bring back to life but I’d imagine I would have to be cleaning the pads frequently in this situation. I planned on doing a test spot first with the yellow pad, but I’m guessing this would possibly be 3-step worthy.

I did a decon wash clay paint correction and c6 lite ceramic coating on a Honda Accord today using all diy products for the first time today and I have to say it was very staight forward and easy! the car is night and day difference. Using the gold standard was so much easier than other systems cause its just one product through the whole paint correction process. Only two questions I have is it ok to put a cotton car cover on it now or should they wait and I did have one high spot I didn't see till the ceramic was dry, how do I fix that? gold standard on the panel and re apply the ceramic coating? I am sold on your products and will be buying much more in the future. thanks
@diydetailofficial

Thank you. For the cover, please wait a minimum of 1 week, and ideally they are not good for paint. For the high spot, simply use DIY Detail Gold Standard Polish on a MF towel, go gently and slowly, inspect often.

This might be a stupid question. When polishing should you always include the roof of the car? Or is it better to have it as an add on or something? Especially on things like SUVs where you can’t even see it.
@FanNETiqueAutoSolutions
@FanNETiqueAutoSolutions 6 ай бұрын
If you are doing a paint correction, however many steps, it means you correct the paint of the vehicle, so the roof is also included since it’s paint. I also include/polish glass when doing paint correction, but you could put it as an add on in your business if that’s what you want. But I guess everyone has their system and your business could have an add on for the roof too. Just make sure you have a perfectly clean surface if you put ceramic coatings :)

I’m new so question maybe silly but if you have a finite amount of clear coat and some is removed when polishing your car, that means your should polish your car x number of times in the lifetime of your vehicle? I thought this could be done a few times a year. What if you keep cars a long time? Then there is a point in time, no more polishing?
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial Ай бұрын
There’s a confusion with the term polishing in detailing. For many polishing means applying a wax, yes that you can do that several times a year. In terms of abrasive polishing, that should be avoided as much as possible. You never remove scratches, you are removing clear coat down to the level of the scratches.

@@diydetailofficial thanks for reply……..one last question. Since I bought my first DA polisher recently I can use it to wax and use a non aggressive polish w/o doing damage to paint, it’s the abrasiveness of the polish that removes clear coat not the DA polisher itself?

I have been wanting to ask you thid from the day ypu instructed your 25mm DA. Do therr has been other companies that produced a 25mm DA not in the US. Why did you go this route , especially when ypu have people out there that never used a long stroke DA to begin with.

@diydetailofficial So even for a begginer, eho ypu always here its best to start with a shirter stoke to get used to the machine and its cutting ability? Ona different note. Will you make smaller backing plates to be available for both your DA and Rotary? Or do you not recommend it Ivan

Also you should never buff with only one hand on a customer’s vehicle. That could easily get l away from you and damage the vehicle. I would fire someone if they did that at the least.
@diydetailofficial

I’ve been polishing with one hand for over 40 years, have yet to have a machine get away from me. I’ve also taught thousands of others to do the same and not had any reports of stray machines.

@@diydetailofficial I have seen many buffers get away from people and almost damage the vehicle. I would still recommend against using 1 hand to buff a car as this would highly irritate customers. People are attached to their investments and if they see someone using only 1 hand buffing their 40k to 50k car they will go crazy. Using one hand only shows carelessness and a sign of being lazy. Your students will lose customers if they do this in front of them. Also this wouldn't be the best way to buff as you would miss areas, or it would be uneven.

I would recommend you guys stop promoting the don’t mask your trim idea. I damaged my plastic textured trim doing so. Now it’s dull. The only reason I bought your polish was for the “no need to mask trim” marketing. And it leaves polish residue that now I need to figure out how to remove.

It’s probably not polish residue but the plastic is burned. To remove polish residue we suggest our red pad on the rotary at low speed with DIY Detail Gold Standard Polish
