How to Cast Hybrid Epoxy Knife Scales with No Pressure Pot or Bubbles using Totalboat Thick Set epoxy
In this short how to video Dan Berg from www.Bergknifemaking.com demonstrates how totalboat thick set epoxy can be used to create beautiful hybrid cast knife scales or handles. Follow these simple instructions. Use stabilized wood, warm the wood prior to casting, Mix slowly to prevent micro bubbles from forming, knife or butane lighter can be used to pup any surface bubbles. Let the epoxy set for 24 hours before removing from mold and 5 to 7 days before polishing.

I was worried the wood part would separate from the epoxy, Shell out but it didn’t and then the shaping since wood is softer than epoxy I thought it would sand differently and not look like a whole piece but it does. Good job.

Interesting. Any ideas on making a checker board pattern by using 1/2"or 3/4" cut squares? I need black and white(to look like paint strokes) with rust colored bleeding edges of the white checker board pattern 3/8" thick x 1.5" x 6" scales........Just started researching this myself
@DIYeasycrafts

I would cast each color separately then cut the squares glue them together aqnd then pour clear over the top. Not sure about rust colored bleeding

@@DIYeasycrafts Thanks for the reply. I found another epoxy that allows you to use waterbased stain under it on wood. (Not sure if most do also)So I might try that first. Waiting on a reply from the manufacture rep. If so that opens up a lot of possibilities for me.

I have a set of four knives that are similar in shape but all different sizes. That I carry. I have been accumulating these hybrid wood acrylic scales.. and once I have all the ones I want I'm planning on putting them on my set of four survival knives. Does anyone know how strong or reliable this type of scale material is? As opposed to say linen Micarta.. or are they just for looks? Would they hold up just fine in survival situations in the woods? Excessive chopping things like that. Regular use. Or should I get some stronger scales?
@DIYeasycrafts

I guess it really depends on if the burl was stabilized and who made the scales.
