Great video that cameo works wonders. Have you since this video gotten your own forge for heat treating you can get them relatively cheap or build one. Also I'd recommend using parks quenching oil over used motor oil, you'll end up with better results. Your etch looks amazing I was looking for tips on stepping up my etching skills thanks for this video.
@DIYeasycrafts5 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Yes I have a two burner Devil Forge and love it. Also have a heat treating oven for stainless. Will have to try out the parks. Always willing to try new things espec if it improves the end result. I have improved a bit since this video. Check out one of the newer etching videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/oauci2uqg8mjjLM

@@DIYeasycrafts that's great to hear I'd like to upgrade to a 2 or 3 burner eventually. We also have an evenheat oven for SS and use large aluminum blocks to air quench. The parks 50 is a must for oil quenching you'll be much happier with the end result. Keep up the great work and videos.
@DIYeasycrafts5 жыл бұрын
Will do. Im using rectangular alumin tube for the plate quench. That way I can blow air through the tubes as well as between them. Will also try the solid
@603dougie6035 жыл бұрын
@@DIYeasycrafts the aluminum plates aren't cheap but large plates will suck the heat out instantly. After half a dozen knives though they will get warm. The thicker and bigger the better. We learned from Alan Folts which was a huge help getting us going. I think we ended up buying from ebay or something we got 2 blocks like 2" thick by 6" wide by 24" long so we could do longer fixed blades. Some people build guides to keep them level and ensure the knives are perfectly straight. I'm no pro but luckily have friends who are and who have helped us learn.

I buy rolls of self adhesive vinyl off amazon. Nothing special. You do need to upgrade the knife in your cutter. I found a new upgraded blade for the Cameo at Michaels art supply

Could someone help me understand the following? How is it that the "trees" at the moon location didn't get darkened after being etched twice?

@bigDbigDbigD7 жыл бұрын
Oh I sent too soon. I guess you can etch after hardening.
@DIYeasycrafts7 жыл бұрын
Yes you can absolutely etch hardened steel. In fact its most common to etch after hardening. I just choose to etch before heat treating because end result is a little darker that way. The arrow head spine etching at the end of this video was done after hardening

Hello; It's a pleasure for me, to learn with your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I want to ask to you, what is the difference between doing the engraving before the thermal treatment and doing it after the tempering? Thanks v m. I send a big hug from Argentina
@DIYeasycrafts7 жыл бұрын
I do it for two reasons. First I think the end result is a little darker and 2nd it allows me to do more work on the blade before my wkly trip to heat treater

You use wrong filters for Your 3m halfmask. You need to add anti small particle cover because Your current filters doesen't filter anything else than chemical vapor. I recomend see trough cover for current filters who clips ontop of them, but use regular medical mascs instead of 3m, because tney are too small.

A video with someone using something like matt frisk film, then transferring an image onto that film, and cutting with a craft knife, would probably be better for a novice. Someone who is first learning something needs to see it done at a basic level.
