Functionally operates just as it should kzbin.infoUgkxiiMg_x4gIWeXMWfBnDdRnME4qJUAva4w holds pressure perfectly when not in use. Glad one of the other reviews pointed out that the bottom pressure release valve was open; thought it was defective at first.

A beautiful fabrication job worth many dollars. To bad potential manufacturers of quiet compressors don,t take the hint and put something like this on the market for a reasonable price. Yes, how to remove the oil from the air discharge and maintain the compressor oil level is a good point.

Most can easily make far more pressure than a typical air compressor, I've seen them go as high as 350psi and heard stories of them going even higher.

Great idea! I was wondering about the oil in the compressor too where a fridge is a closed system, this one is open. Still looks like a fun project! :)

I have been thinking the same thing. I have almost pristine cold storage rooms compressor waiting for this project, but havent been able to solve oil issue reliably. You could get automatic oiler to feed new oil to system and have oil extractor least before hose, but i dont know how much it really removes and would require emptying regular intervals. I also though about making cyclone filter that collects moisture and oil, where there is two valves opening and closing controlled by arduino that gets data from visual sensors that see when water and oil levels are top emptying it automatically just enough to get water out from bottom (oil usually floats) and feeding oil back to system, but this is complicated and probably will cause issues over time. Regardless what ever i get oil out, i would not use this to paint cars and playing with oil kinda defeats idea of this being used in apartment building i planned using it, before moving.
@lazyh-online4839
@lazyh-online4839 3 жыл бұрын
One important thing that often gets forgotten, these compressors are typically filled with poe oil, which will react with moisture in the air and corrode the internals of the pump. Replace with engine oil, gear oil, or mineral oil then periodically top up, keep a cheap oil separator inline between the pump and tank and it'll work just fine to recycle the used oil, or just top up periodically and toss the used stuff.

Great work partner. But I see some precautionary measures that you have not installed in your project. And they are very important. First of all, I do not see that you have installed a safety valve. This is very important, because if at any given time the pressure switch breaks down, it could burst the boiler or some of its associated parts. Nor do I see that you have installed an air filter at the compressor inlet. Another issue, no less important, is that these refrigerator compressors are designed to work in a closed circuit. With which, you will have a very important oil loss every time you use your project. I recommend that at the outlet of the compressor, install an oil separator. Another important thing, should have installed a purge key or evacuation of condensation that occurs inside the boiler. Otherwise, the moment will come that corrupts the inside of the reboiler by rust. I suppose you have installed the anti-return valve, another very important detail. Do not take my words as a negative criticism, on the contrary, I loved your project. I only suggest some very important improvements as far as security is concerned. A big hug.....

These were commercially made about 30 years ago by Devilbis. They were called silent airbrush compressors. They cut the compressor around the circumference at the seem. Dumped the oil and replaced it with an air compressor oil. Probably Mineral spirit oil. A special clamp similar to a huge hose clamp that fit around the tank to hold the top and bottom and a rubber seal together. I had one. It was absolutely silent. You only heard a psst when it turned on and off. perfect for an apartment setting. I am not sure if they still make them. I no longer do airbrushing. The unit cost around $350.00 back then. You could buy the oil in art supply stores by the liter. One of the copper tubings was for refilling the oil. You only use 30 to 40 psi for airbrush. It also had a tank about the size of a medium sized hand job fire extinguisher. It is obvious this one is pushing 140psi ouch!!

@Coronadraht Sorry that not a pop off / safety valve. Just the tank inlet and the blow off for the limiter. That small valve just reduces the head pressure when the limiter turns off the compressor. That allows it to start much easier when there is pressure in the tank

Thanks for sharing.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 5 жыл бұрын
Its a compressor from a refrigerator, when operating properly they're extremely quiet because they're a rotary type compressor rather than a piston type as most air compressors are, which by design are loud. A rotary or a screw compressor will be very quiet due to the way they compress the air through the intake and outlet system.

If you do this again I would like to recommend some changes. 1 - Drill and tap the base before welding the tank on (2:22) 2 - Put the handle of the cylinder for the container in the center of the rig to help you carry it. Don't cut it off (1:46) 3 - Don't drill through the wall of the tank, this compromises the strength of the tank. Instead put a T pipe to act as the inlet/outlet (3:27) 4 - Don't weld the pipe into place as this prevents the machine from being taken apart (7:27, 9:36). A flexible hose and clamps work just as well. 5 - Make sure there is a way to lubricate the motor once in a while. This refrigerator pump was meant to pump refrigerant, not dusty air. 6 - Make sure the compressor can turn itself off. I don't know what the limit on your tank is, but on mine it is 100psi. 7 - You will need to find a way to take the compressor apart to drain the condensation. But what do I know? I've just got a diploma as a welding and fabrication technician, two years as an industrial powder painter and three years with an air brake endorsement.

@awalt26439
@awalt26439 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the fridge compressor is great regarding low noise but you will run into a major problem with water accumulating in the compressor and mixing with the oil in it and eventually producing a milky sludge and thus diminishing the lubrication quality of that mixture and sooner or later (probably sooner) burning out this nice and quiet compressor. Water in the adjacent pressure tank is not much of a problem as we can get rid of it in various ways, however, I don't know of any way to get rid of the humidity in the air that first get sucked into the compressor and it is that humidity turning into water once air compression commences.

i used to have one of those, although not nearly as elaborate. worked fine for years until the compressor locked up.
@roberttill3787
@roberttill3787 4 жыл бұрын
It locked up because over time the lubrication in the motor/compressor will escape up the pipework, never to return! A closed unit of this type loses lubrication up the pipework, but usually it returns to the unit. This is not possible when using the unit in this way.

robert till - There is another video showing the oil left in the compressor years later (and 1000 hours of use) was the same as what was put in. So the amount of oil in the air will be very very small. Of course you do want to replace it with mineral oil (baby oil for that nice scent)

I was experimenting with an old fridge compressor. Attached a connector to it and connected it to the output of an old loud crappy compressor. The fridge pump got the tank up to 8bar quickly, so I replaced the old loud pump with this one. Now that is actually connected via the valve to the electric switch and safety stuff it's no longer pressurizing the tank. The electric switch is hissing. Is the switch malfunctioning or do they work by letting some air escape and are therefore not compatible with every pump? Can I fix this somehow?

Excellent work but I have the doubt of how to do so that the compressor does not do the work it does when it is connected to the refrigerator ... that is, it rests by the action of the Relay ... because I have one without a tank and works for a while So when I disconnect it, I have to wait a while for it to work again. I would appreciate your guidance on this ...I do not speak English.

Nice, I like it! One problem, tho. As far as I know, these compressors use their coolant/refrigerant as lubricant. Meaning, it is now running dry and without an intake filter it will also suck in dust and debris. This will prop. result in significant wear on the cylinder, cylinder-wall and valve. And as their is no way of lubricating it without oil getting into the high-pressure part of the compressor (Air-tank). This concept seems impractical (at least for me). Nevertheless, nice build and a good proof of concept! Keep it up!

@@janwiersma1449 Mine has been running daily since 2013 with no problem, everything in the case gets oiled when the motor runs. The trick is having the right amount and type of oil in there. If you dont exceed 50% duty cycle, or allow the oil to exceed 100 deg C and change it annually these compressors will provide years of troublefree service. If this sounds like a steel bucket full of nails tied to a donkey, i`ll eat the donkey and his hat lol kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4e9cqR7nLV0e6c

@@minysmith9043 Depends on the tank size and compressor. I use two 3/4hp heads on a 50L tank. From empty 0psi -120psi takes 4 mins 30 sec. From the pressure switch cut in at 85psi to cut-out at 120psi it takes less than 90 seconds. Most folks on you tube use too small a compressor and too large a tank which leads to overheating and a short life expectancy for the compressor.

hello I have the main parts for this build I have a 2 port valve with electronic cut off what im wondering what's that. T piece you uses to connect the pump to the tank
@ArcaneTinker
@ArcaneTinker 3 жыл бұрын
It's a check valve. Air can only go from the pump to the tank and not leak back into the pump when it shuts off. The little squiggle tube that taps off of it and goes back to the unloader valve on the bottom of the pressure switch so when the compressor switch satisfies and shuts off the motor, air pressure is automatically dumped out of the line between tank and compressor so the motor doesn't have to start up against a pressurized line.

Other than silent aire compressors, I wonder why more companies do not use this technology for air compressors. Although the cfm is low, it's much quieter and is great for in-door light use such as airbrushing.
