There are many options for faux or electric fireplaces if you’d still like one in your home. I think it’s ingrained and a primal urge for humans to live near a fire source.
@kaasmeester590320 күн бұрын
The one in our home (a '40s job) was removed ages ago, but we put a modern one back in. It really does wonders for the room, visually divides it into 2 logical parts and it's a good focal point, especially when lit. Also... if the gas heater goes out, it does a good job of warming the house. It's sad that so many people in the 80s and 90s decided to remove fireplaces from old buildings.

I have lived in every US time zone and love a fireplace. I live in the Tampa area now and no fireplace. Some homes have them but more homes have pools. At this moment we are having an unusual cold snap (frost warning tonight) and I would give anything to be warming my cold feet in front of a fire. I found you for the first time tonight. Good tips. There are little things that ruin your look that you pointed out. One more is take the Cellophane Off your lamp shades.

Sometimes they don't use the fireplace or need a space for additional seating. To have a huge section of wall space taken up, whether by a beautiful fireplace or not, isn't ideal.
@mygoldennotebook2191Ай бұрын
My fireplace is in a really awkward space. We have lit the fireplace no more than 10 times in all the years I've lived here. After each fireplace "evening" I always wondered why we had bothered. It's not an efficient source of heat. If you sit in front of it, only one side of your body is warm. You have to clean it. You have to have it inspected every so often. It's way too much work for the payback. People are always telling me it's romantic. However, civilization has worked hard to put fires away and get furnaces and heaters instead. (Yes, I also abhor camping. My idea of a vacation always includes room service. No, the food doesn't taste better and cabins aren't that attractive, including those featured in AD.)

Regarding the fake florals and greens...I met Charles Nelson Reilly while employed in a hotel he stayed in while directing a play. He said as a director it was his job to make everything look real and then set about to cut petals and leaves off the fake plants in the lobby, scattering them on the table beneath the plant. Amazing how much of a difference it made! Since then, my sister and I have used this method. Really does add an authenticity to the plant.

Some good tips there! I've got almost all open leg furnishings, but it isn't changing because so much is family heirlooms, and in the 1890s-1920s I guess furniture just was always on open legs. And the fireplace is covered up by our daughter's concert harp which needed a temporary home. A note on artificial flower stems: look up what the plant ought to look like before bending! The West Elm photo has Alliums with curly stems - NO! They don't grow that way in real life.

About the canvas sides... Most of our wall art is in good wooden frames, but we have 2 drawings printed on canvas in the kitchen. When we ordered them, we had the option of having them with the sides painted or left white. And they look way better with the sides unfinished. Keep in mind... these are pop-art drawings a lady did of our cats, so maybe that is a whole 'nother category of tacky... But they are bright and cheerful, and liven up an otherwise somewhat boring corner of the house. And printing the sides messes with the symmetry. Loving the advice though, and the presentation. Subscribed. Speaking of tacky, how do you feel about a monitor arm bolted to the living room sofa?

#1-Unfinished canvas edges---yeah, OK, but DIY it with stained/painted paint sticks or some moulding from Home Depot. #2-Open legs let you clean under the furniture w/out moving it. Closed legs look---modern or like you need to hide something. Ugh. #3-Ha! ALL my rods have center support---have to b/c I have all heavy linen drapes...OK, they are drop cloths, now don't tell me THOSE are tacky until you price custom 120-inch drapes!! #4-No covering the fireplace! SO basic! #5-Hahaha---you only scuff paint ONCE a week? Wait til BabyGirl gets to be a toddler!! I'll bet you suddenly embrace "shabby chic!" #6-I just uncluttered one wall of windows so I could put fake wrought iron French balcony fencing on it. Will it be tacky? Maybe... #7-Oh goodness, I am the Black Widow of flower arrangements---all I do is touch the vase of perfectly arranged stems & they flop to one side. Can't dance. Can't swim. Can't arrange flowers. #8-I HATE to shimmy my ass past furniture. Lucky me, BIG rooms, but you are so right about 2 openings, never thought of it that way. Thank you AGAIN for a fun Saturday morning video, sorry about the long "comment," but I was trying to avoid having to go do 3 days worth of dishes sitting on my kitchen counter, the ULTIMATE tacky look. I've lived in a few old apartments with nonworking fireplaces, and I also inherited a piano from my mom's family (I can't play it, but it's not worth selling), so my go to is always putting the piano in front of the fireplace and taking advantage of the mantel to extend the decorating space, lol. I would actually love to live somewhere with a functioning fireplace, but right now we're mostly hung up on the fact that without a mantel in our current place, the piano looks so much smaller and we've had to cut back on how many holiday decorations we can use.

I can't understand why it's attractive to have curtain rods show. Unless you have a fancy curtain rod, it looks unfinished. I've been noticing it more and more on decorating videos. It looks off-balance to me. If you don't like a ruffled valance, you could have a tailored valance, kind of boxy and sophisticated. Or a cornice which can be plain or fancy. Bare curtain rods look tacky But aside from that, your video was good to watch to get ideas! Thanks!
