One thing I have never taken for granted with this series is the author's knack for slapping us all in the face with a minor detail/clue he laid earlier that makes you go 'Oooohhhh... I should have totally seen that coming!' I too am anxiously awaiting the reveal of Kyon's name. I think it will be something that means 'Hier to the Dream' or something cryptic like that.

Actually I like to think Tsuruya is the real god but just enjoys sitting back and laughing at all the mischief. I mean, seriously, in the novels she is totally loaded (and she never seems to be around any family), knows how to egg Kyon and Haruhi into acting, and is always hinting that she knows more than her appearance allows.

It's not John Smith. Kyon said he made that up on a whim. According to novel 9, Sasaki says Kyon has a royal and imposing name. Tanigawa also said Kyon's name will be revealed in novel 10 (but it won't be a last minute thing).

(Of course, he's also been in closed space, time traveled, experienced an alternate reality and straight up told the infinitely powerful Data Integration Thought Entity to go fuck itself, so he's already beyond "normal" ;-) )

Actually, I think the slider has already arrived as of vol. 9. In the alpha set of events, that new girl joins the SOS Brigade. She reveals herself as knowing Kyon. I think she is a version of Kyon's sister's 'developed' friend that is old enough to be in the school with Kyon.

Actually, Kyon says in novel 4 that Haruhi has never heard his real name, so I dunno. xD Yuki and Itsuki don't even call him by any name at all, and Mikuru probably thinks it's cute.

Correct. For example, consider the Yugioh character "Esper Roba", who claimed to have psychic powers. Besides, Itsuki-kun actually says in the series that his power is essentially ESP. And they don't use "esper" to refer to him, but a Japanese word that (to my ears) sounds something like "chounou-ryoukusho"- the "sho" means "user", so it would be a user of "chounou-ryouku", which literally means ESP or psychic abilities.

The rest of the brigade must know the significance of his name and choose to call him Kyon instead to distract him from realising who he truly is. As for what Kyon actually is i'll settle for a Ghostbuster reference: Kyon is the Key Master and Haruhi is the Gate Keeper. Something is significant is happening and it involves bringing those two together.

Now,in english "esper" is an error in the translation of the japanesse pronunciation to Romanji. The kanjis used to write "esper" are "su" and "pa"(beetween them,a little "tsu",that indicates "more force on the pronunciation of the next syllabe") The correct word is "Super"(it too use "su" and "pa") and no "esper" (Itsuki:superpower-->superhero)

@suikogaidenFire In truth Kyon's character is what holds the whole story together and makes it interesting. Without him the Haruhi-verse is just a mishmash of sci-fi elements. With him, and his skewed view on everything, the plot has vibrant color and immense depth. Amazing what a normal guy can do, huh?
